It may happen through an exploited software flaw, or after a person is misled into approving an installation prompt. The defining issue is not simply whether there was a click, but whether the installation was wanted and understood.
What “drive-by install” means
US-CERT describes a drive-by install as code installed, or requested for installation, simply because someone visits a malicious or compromised website. Depending on the circumstances, the software might install automatically or a site might pressure or trick the visitor into accepting a prompt. US-CERT’s spyware overview is an older source, so its examples of particular browsers and controls are historical rather than current instructions.

The phrase is closely related to “drive-by download.” Download usually describes delivery of a file; install emphasizes that software is placed on or set up on the device. Sources also use the terms interchangeably, so the distinction is useful but not universal. A 2020 paper describes drive-by downloads as unintended downloads that can exploit browser vulnerabilities and lead to malware installation. The paper concerns its own study and does not establish how common these attacks are today.

Exploiting a software vulnerability
A malicious page—or a legitimate site that has been compromised—may deliver code that takes advantage of a flaw in a browser, plugin, application, or operating system. If the vulnerable software allows it, the code can download or install unwanted software during browsing. Out-of-date internet-facing software can therefore increase risk.

Misleading or pressured approval
A site may present an installation request in confusing language, disguise what a control does, or repeatedly prompt until the visitor accepts or leaves. A click in this situation does not necessarily mean the person gave informed consent. Older US-CERT material describes Internet Explorer ActiveX prompts; that is historical context, not evidence that current drive-by installs generally rely on ActiveX.
How this differs from an installer bundle
Casual use of “drive-by” can blur together several kinds of unwanted installation. An exploit that runs while a person browses, a deceptive browser prompt, and an optional extra accepted in a software installer are different scenarios. To describe one precisely, say what triggered the installation and whether the person knowingly approved it; there is no single formal taxonomy that settles every casual use of the term.

Does it require a click?
No. Some drive-by installs may be triggered by visiting a page and exploiting a vulnerability, without an intentional installation click. Others involve a click on a misleading or coercive prompt. For that reason, “drive-by” does not always mean zero-click, and the presence of a click alone does not prove the person understood or wanted the installation.
What can happen after installation
The result depends on the code installed; the term does not identify one specific malware or guarantee a particular outcome. A malicious browser component may change browser settings, download additional malware, or operate independently. Spyware or other malware may expose sensitive information, steal credentials, or enable further unauthorized activity. These are possible consequences, not effects that occur in every case.

Ways to reduce the risk
- Install security updates. Keep the operating system, browser, and other internet-facing applications patched.
- Reject unclear installation requests. Treat unexpected requests to add software or browser components as suspicious. Close the page or prompt rather than approving an installation you cannot identify.
- Review installer choices. Read installation screens and check preselected options instead of clicking through defaults; an unnoticed option can add software you did not intend to install.
- Use updated security software. Trusted antivirus or antispyware software can be one layer of defense, but it is not a guarantee that every drive-by install will be blocked.
- Weigh content restrictions carefully. Blocking active content can reduce some risks, but it can also prevent legitimate website features from working.
If you suspect a drive-by install
- Do not approve further prompts. Close the suspicious page or prompt without interacting with its installation controls.
- Update your software. Apply available security updates to your operating system, browser, and internet-facing applications.
- Run a scan with trusted, updated security software. Follow its instructions if it identifies unwanted software; a clean scan is not proof that no compromise occurred.
- Check for unexpected changes. Review recently installed apps and browser settings, such as the home page or search provider, and remove changes you do not recognize using the operating system or browser’s normal controls.
- Protect accounts if sensitive information may be exposed. From a device you trust, change affected passwords and enable additional account security where available.
What the term does not tell you
“Drive-by install” describes a route or circumstance of installation, not a specific threat family, a measure of severity, or a current estimate of how often infections occur. A 2020 detection study reports experimental model metrics, but those results are not prevalence figures or a measure of consumer antivirus effectiveness. The older CERT guidance is useful for the basic concept, while its Windows XP, Internet Explorer, and ActiveX details should not be treated as present-day platform guidance.
