Before making a purchase, it must account for near-term bills, taxes, capital spending, debt payments and an appropriate liquidity reserve. Only cash left available under the company’s treasury policy can be allocated to Bitcoin.
Why operating income is not the same as cash available
Operating income measures operating performance under accounting rules. It does not show how much cash the company can safely use for a discretionary investment. Cash flow is affected by when customers pay and suppliers are paid, as well as capital expenditures, taxes, financing obligations and non-cash accounting items.

That distinction matters: a profitable company may have little spare cash at a particular moment, while cash on its balance sheet may have come from earlier operations, borrowing or a securities offering. The balance alone does not establish where the money originated.

A practical decision follows a cash waterfall: forecast operating cash receipts, meet required and expected outflows, preserve liquidity for ordinary operations and plausible disruptions, then determine whether any remaining cash may be invested under the company’s policy and approval process.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
- Forecast cash from the business. Estimate receipts and payments over a planning period that fits the company’s operating cycle.
- Set aside required cash. Account for payroll, suppliers, taxes, debt service, capital expenditures and other known obligations.
- Keep a working-capital and contingency reserve. The amount depends on the company’s circumstances; there is no universal reserve size established by the cited filings.
- Apply treasury policy and governance. Decide whether cash above the reserve may be allocated to Bitcoin, and obtain the approvals required by the company.
- Track the actual source. Distinguish operating cash from existing excess cash and financing proceeds in internal records and public descriptions.
Strategy’s filings describe a policy that considers cash needs and working-capital requirements, among other factors. That is an example of one company’s approach, not a recommended reserve formula for every business. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
How operating cash differs from other funding sources
| Source | What it means | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Cash generated by operations | Cash from business activities, affected by timing and working-capital movements. | Closest to “operating income” in the question, but a purchase still depends on cash remaining after obligations and reserves. |
| Existing excess cash | Cash already held above operating-liquidity needs. | May originally have come from operations, borrowing or capital raises; its presence does not prove its source. |
| Equity or debt proceeds | Money raised by issuing shares, notes or other securities, or by borrowing. | External financing, not cash generated by operations. Debt brings repayment obligations; equity can dilute existing shareholders. |
| Sale of mined Bitcoin | A mining company sells some Bitcoin produced by its operations for cash. | A mining-specific route, not the usual operating-cash model for an ordinary commercial business. |
| Sale or financing against existing Bitcoin | The company sells Bitcoin it already holds or pledges it to obtain financing. | Monetizes or borrows against an existing treasury asset; it does not explain the source of the initial purchase. |
What company filings illustrate
Strategy: operating cash alongside financing
Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says it had previously bought Bitcoin using cash flow from operations, as well as proceeds from capital raises and borrowings. These are distinct funding sources, even when used toward the same treasury objective. The company’s description documents its own past and policy; it is not a recommendation or a typical-company statistic. Strategy’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K

MARA: a miner selling some production
MARA reported that in the second half of 2025 it began selling a portion of Bitcoin produced by its mining operations to fund ongoing operating expenses, and continued selling through year-end. This illustrates how a Bitcoin miner can turn production into cash; it should not be generalized to companies that do not mine Bitcoin. MARA’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K
Fold: possible uses of holdings after acquisition
Fold’s fiscal 2025 filing describes possible future treasury actions, including selling Bitcoin for general corporate purposes, pledging it for financing, or seeking income-generating uses. Those options concern how existing holdings might later support the business. They are contemplated possibilities, not evidence that every company uses them or that outcomes are assured. How to compare the funding choices
There is no universally best route established by these company disclosures. A company assessing alternatives should compare:
- Liquidity: how much cash remains for operations and obligations after the transaction.
- Cost and claims: interest and repayment for debt, potential dilution and investor claims for equity, or the opportunity cost of selling or reserving Bitcoin.
- Reliability: recurring business cash flow versus access to capital markets or variable mining production.
- Bitcoin exposure: whether the company buys and retains Bitcoin, sells newly mined Bitcoin, or borrows against existing holdings.
- Downside flexibility: whether weaker cash flow or a change in Bitcoin’s price could force asset sales or increase repayment pressure.
The filings describe individual company strategies; they do not provide a standardized cost or performance comparison across these options, or establish a market-wide allocation percentage.
