If a controller works in Android or Steam but not in a DroidDeck game, first identify where input stops. In a Steam session, compare DroidDeck’s two controller modes at Steam page → Touch & controls → Controller: Steam Deck controller is the default, while Xbox 360 controller is the documented alternative to try when a game’s axes or mapping do not match expectations. If neither mode helps, save the session logs from Download/DroidDeck for a useful bug report.
Find where the controller stops responding
Input passes through several layers: the Android device, DroidDeck, Steam’s controller interface and Steam Input, and finally the game. Work out which layer appears to fail before changing settings.
- No response in Android: Check whether the controller is connected and whether Android responds to it outside DroidDeck. Android’s compatibility specification says HID events must map to Android InputEvent constants, but that requirement does not establish that Steam or a particular game receives the controls it expects. See the Android 11 Compatibility Definition for that general platform requirement.
- DroidDeck menus do not respond: Note whether the controller is recognized elsewhere and record the device and connection details. The project documentation does not establish a universal Android-side fix for this symptom.
- Steam menus respond, but a game ignores input: Focus on DroidDeck’s controller mode and the game’s Steam Input behavior before changing Bluetooth pairing or replacing hardware.
- Only one game has wrong buttons or axes: Compare the controller modes for that title; the issue may be the layout the game receives rather than a failure of the controller connection.
Compare DroidDeck’s controller modes
During a Steam session, open Steam page → Touch & controls → Controller. The project progress log identifies Steam Deck controller as the default and Xbox 360 controller as the alternative. Labels can vary between builds, so check the installed version if the path differs. See the official DroidDeck repository and its linked release notes.

Check how Steam Input and the game interact
DroidDeck’s release notes say that in Steam sessions using the Steam Deck controller representation, games receive Steam Input virtual pads. The Xbox 360 option is described as having the right axis layout for games with Steam Input disabled. That makes the mode choice relevant when Steam navigation works but a game ignores input or interprets axes incorrectly.

Change one variable at a time: try the alternative mode, then check the same game again. This helps distinguish a mode mismatch from a broader connection problem. Project documentation does not provide a complete compatibility matrix for controllers, Android versions, DroidDeck builds, and individual games, so neither mode can be promised to work on every setup.
Save logs and report an unresolved issue
If changing modes does not resolve the problem, reproduce it and attach the session folder from Download/DroidDeck. The README directs bug reporters to include that folder, and release notes say shared logs carry controller and touch-mode details. Add concise setup information so others can understand the failure:

Submit the report through the official repository’s issue tracker or the community channels linked there. Use the official GitHub repository and its releases for project information: the repository says DroidDeck has no standalone website and warns against download links from sites claiming to represent the team.
