How Does a Chime Card Work? Debit Card vs. Secured Credit Card

Chime’s debit card spends Chime Checking funds; its secured Chime Card is a credit card backed by a Secured Deposit Account. Here’s how to tell them apart.

Chime offers two different cards: a Visa debit card that spends money in your Chime Checking account, and the secured Chime Card, a Visa credit card backed by funds held in a Secured Deposit Account. The distinction matters: debit purchases use your checking balance, while Chime Card purchases are credit activity supported by secured funds. Chime’s app shows an “Available” balance for spending, but each card works differently.

What type of cards does Chime offer?

Chime provides a checking-linked Visa debit card and a separate secured Visa credit card called Chime Card. They are not interchangeable products, even though both are connected to a Chime Checking relationship.

Bank provider The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., depending on the account Check the agreement associated with your account

Chime is a financial technology company, not a bank. Banking services are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., Members FDIC. Which bank and agreement apply depends on the customer’s account. Review Chime’s policies and agreements for the documents specific to your account.

How does the debit card work with your money?

The Chime Visa Debit Card is linked to Chime Checking. When you make a debit purchase, the amount comes out of the checking-account funds available for that transaction. Chime says the card can be used wherever Visa is accepted, and the account includes mobile-wallet availability, transaction notifications, and in-app controls such as blocking the card.

Chime advertises access to over 47,000 fee-free ATMs on its debit-card page. That company-published figure does not mean every ATM or cash transaction is free: out-of-network ATM and over-the-counter advance fees may apply, as can charges for optional services. Check the current fee disclosures and account terms before relying on a particular cash-access option.

How does the secured Chime Card work with your money?

Chime Card is a secured Visa credit card paired with Chime Checking and a Secured Deposit Account. Funds in the secured account support the card’s spending capacity, which Chime presents in the app as an “Available” balance. A purchase on this card is credit-card activity backed by secured funds, rather than a direct debit purchase from checking.

Chime’s product information describes the option to choose the debit or credit card for a purchase. That choice changes which card transaction you make: the debit card draws on checking funds, while the secured card uses its credit-card structure and secured backing. Follow the app’s displayed balance and the terms of your specific card agreement to understand what is available to spend and how transactions are handled.

Can the Chime Card help build credit?

Chime says it reports applicable card activity to TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. On-time payment history may help credit, while late payments may hurt it; neither approval nor use guarantees a higher credit score. Credit scores reflect multiple factors, so reporting the account does not promise a particular result. See Chime’s credit information and your card agreement for the applicable reporting and payment terms.

Are rewards available on the secured card?

As of Chime’s June 1, 2026 explainer, qualifying direct deposits can make Chime Plus members eligible for 2% cash back or Chime Prime members eligible for 5% on eligible secured-card purchases, up to $1,500 per month. These are conditional tiers, not an automatic reward on every Chime card or purchase. Eligibility requirements and exclusions apply; consult the current rewards addendum and disclosures for full terms.
