Decline an unexpected request. If a stranger’s payment has already arrived, don’t send it back yourself—contact Venmo Support. A completed payment you sent generally can’t be canceled, though certain unclaimed pending payments can be taken back.
First, identify what happened
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Someone requested money from you | Decline the request if it was unexpected; verify with the person through another channel if it appears to come from someone you know. Venmo’s guidance on payments from strangers. |
| A stranger sent you money | Do not move or return the money yourself. Contact Venmo Support. Venmo’s guidance on payments from strangers. |
| You paid the wrong person | Completed payments generally cannot be canceled. Follow Venmo’s wrong-recipient instructions. Venmo’s instructions for a mistaken payment. |
| Your outgoing payment is pending | Check its status and recipient details; some unclaimed payments to an unregistered phone number or email have a Take Back option. Venmo’s cancellation guidance. |
| You did not authorize the payment | Treat it as an account-security issue and contact Venmo promptly. Venmo’s dispute guidance. |
How to decline an unexpected request
- Open Venmo and locate the request.
- Decline it if you weren’t expecting it. If the request appears to come from a friend or relative, contact them outside Venmo to confirm before paying or taking another action.
- If you received an email notification but cannot find the request in the Venmo app or on the web, don’t rely on the email alone; Venmo says it may be fraudulent. Check Venmo directly.
Venmo notes that scammers may make a request appear to come from someone you know. Verify through a separate channel rather than replying to the request.

If a stranger sent money to your account
Do not make a payment back to the sender or move the unexpected funds. Venmo’s instruction is: “If you received a payment on Venmo from someone you don’t know, do not attempt to return the payment on your own or move the money.” Contact Support and provide the transaction details it requests. A payment may result from someone entering a similar username or contact detail; Venmo says this alone does not mean your account was compromised. You can block the sender if you do not want further contact. See Venmo’s instructions.
If you sent money to the wrong person
Venmo says payments generally cannot be canceled after they reach the recipient. If you paid a friend, Venmo suggests asking them to pay you back. If the recipient is a stranger, gather the recipient’s username, the amount and date, and details of the person you meant to pay, then contact Support. Opening a dispute for a payment you intentionally sent to the wrong person will not fix the mistake. Follow Venmo’s wrong-recipient instructions.

Do not try to reverse a completed payment by asking your bank to stop it. Venmo warns that stopping a completed payment through the bank creates a loss on your Venmo account that you must repay. Venmo describes a limited exception for a bank-funded payment still marked Pending with an estimated completion date; its help page says that situation may be addressed with the bank. Check the payment’s actual status and follow the transaction-specific guidance. Venmo’s cancellation guidance.
When a pending payment can be taken back
Pending does not always mean the payment can be canceled. Venmo identifies bank processing and an unverified or unregistered recipient phone number or email as common reasons a payment may remain pending.

If the payment is unclaimed and was sent to a phone number or email address not associated with an active Venmo account, you may see Take Back on the transaction in the app. That option is limited to this kind of unclaimed payment. If eligible, the payment expires after 30 days if it is neither claimed nor taken back. For certain bank-funded transactions, Venmo says processing typically takes 3–5 business days; the recipient receives the money when processing completes. Check Venmo’s current instructions.
Special case: a payment sent through iMessage
An iMessage payment follows a separate process: the recipient must accept it before the money is added to their Venmo account. If the recipient does not claim it within three days, it is reversed automatically. The sender can cancel it sooner in the Venmo app, before it is claimed. These rules apply to the iMessage flow, not to completed Venmo payments generally. See Venmo’s iMessage payment guidance.

If you did not authorize the payment
If you genuinely do not recognize or did not authorize a transaction, contact Venmo promptly and treat it as an account-security issue. Venmo’s dispute process includes unauthorized account activity, purchase problems, and billing errors. That is different from a payment you intentionally sent to the wrong username. Review Venmo’s dispute guidance.
