What Delivered Means in iMessage (and What You Can Actually Control)
In iMessage, Delivered indicates that your message reached the recipient’s device (or at least their iMessage service). Apple does not provide a user-facing toggle labeled Turn off Delivered for iMessage.

Option 1: Turn Off Read Receipts (Removes Read Status, Not Delivered)
Turning off read receipts stops iMessage from showing whether you’ve read a message. This is the closest match to “turning off status indicators.”
iPhone and iPad steps
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Messages.
- Find Read Receipts.
- Turn Send Read Receipts OFF.
- Exit Settings. Changes apply immediately in most cases.
If the conversation previously showed Read, future messages should stop updating that status. You may still see Delivered, because delivery status is separate from reading status.
Option 2: Turn Off Message Notifications (Stops Delivered/Incoming Alerts)
If what you want is to stop being interrupted (banners/sounds) when messages arrive, notifications are the correct control. Turning them off won’t change the text you see on your own screen inside Messages, but it can stop alerts related to delivered/incoming messages.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Tap Messages.
- Turn Allow Notifications OFF.
- (Optional) If you prefer alerts without sound, instead set Sounds to Off and keep notifications enabled.
For iOS 17 and iPadOS 17, the labels above match the common layout. If you’re on an older iOS version, the structure may be slightly different, but you’ll still find Messages notification controls in Settings.
Option 3: Adjust Focus/Notification Delivery for Messages
If you want delivered/read indicators to remain possible in Messages, but you want to prevent interruptions during work, sleep, or meetings, Focus is usually the cleanest approach.

iPhone and iPad steps
- Open Settings.
- Tap Focus.
- Select an existing Focus mode (for example Work or Sleep) or tap + to create one.
- Tap Focus Filters (or Options, depending on iOS version).
- Adjust Notifications behavior for Messages via allowed people/apps rules.
When Focus is on, the Messages app may still show delivery status when you open it, but you won’t get banner/sound alerts as often (or at all), depending on your Focus rules.

Check iMessage status
- Open Settings → Messages.
- Confirm whether iMessage is ON or OFF.
If iMessage is ON, you should expect delivery status to appear in some form when opening message details.

Verify you actually disabled read receipts
- Go to Settings → Messages → Read Receipts.
- Confirm Send Read Receipts is OFF.
Disabling read receipts affects Read, not Delivered.
Confirm the notification setting you changed
- Go to Settings → Notifications → Messages.
- Make sure Allow Notifications is OFF (or Sounds is Off if you prefer partial alerts).
Notifications control alerts. They don’t remove delivery labels inside the Messages thread.

Why do I still see Delivered even after changing notification settings?
Notification settings control system alerts. The Delivered label is shown inside the Messages conversation interface, not as a notification.
Does disabling iMessage switch everything to SMS?
Most of the time, yes—messages will fall back to SMS/MMS if your carrier plan supports it. iMessage-specific features won’t apply.
