iCloud Private Relay is designed to protect your browsing privacy by routing Safari traffic through Apple-managed relays. The catch: Apple doesn’t provide a native iPhone setting to disable Private Relay for individual websites while keeping it on for everything else.
That means “disable iCloud Private Relay for specific websites on iPhone” typically requires a workaround—most reliably by routing only those domains through a VPN configured with split tunneling.

What iCloud Private Relay Actually Does (and Why Per-Site Disable Isn’t Built In)
iCloud Private Relay (part of iCloud+ where available) hides your IP address from the destination website and prevents the destination from learning your approximate location. It’s implemented as a network privacy feature that applies to eligible traffic system-wide (primarily Safari).

As of iOS 16 through iOS 17 (and current iOS releases that support Private Relay), Apple exposes only a binary switch in Settings: turn Private Relay on or off. There’s no per-website allowlist/denylist in Apple’s UI.
So if you need one site to see a “real” client IP or different routing behavior, you have two realistic routes:
- Disable Private Relay globally (simple, but affects all eligible traffic).
- Keep Private Relay enabled and use traffic routing so that only the target domains bypass it—most commonly via a VPN with split tunneling.
Prerequisites Before You Change Anything
Before you touch settings, confirm a few basics so you don’t end up troubleshooting the wrong variable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- iPhone model and iOS version: Private Relay is supported on supported iPhone models with iOS 15+; most users will be on iOS 16 or iOS 17.
- iCloud+ subscription: Private Relay is included with iCloud+ (where available in your region).
- Safari usage: Private Relay is primarily applied to Safari traffic. If the site works in Chrome but not Safari (or vice versa), you’re probably seeing this difference in scope.
- VPN app behavior: For split tunneling, you need a VPN app that supports domain-based routing, not just “all or nothing.”
If you’re not sure whether Private Relay is currently active, check the next section—seeing the toggle state is your fastest ground truth.
Method 1: Turn Off iCloud Private Relay on Your iPhone (Global Disable)
This is the only method that directly and fully stops Private Relay. It’s also the method most likely to solve compatibility issues with sites that behave badly when they detect relay/proxy routing.
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap your name (Apple ID) at the top.
- Tap iCloud.
- Tap Private Relay.
- Toggle Private Relay to Off.
If you’re using iOS 16/17, the wording is typically exactly “Private Relay” under iCloud. If you don’t see it, confirm iCloud+ is active and your region supports the feature.
What this changes: Eligible Safari traffic will no longer be routed through Apple’s relay infrastructure, and websites will observe your normal IP path. This affects all eligible sites, not just one.
Method 2: Disable Private Relay for Specific Websites Using a VPN Split-Tunnel (Most Effective Workaround)
If your goal is “keep Private Relay on, but make example.com behave like it’s not relayed,” split tunneling is the closest practical option.

Because Private Relay has no per-site switch, the workaround is to route only the domains you care about through a VPN that the site traffic uses instead of Apple’s relay path.
How split tunneling maps to Private Relay behavior
When a VPN is actively routing specific traffic, the destination typically sees the VPN’s egress characteristics rather than the iCloud Private Relay egress. Practically, that means your target domains can stop exhibiting relay-related behavior while the rest of your browsing remains protected by Private Relay.
Exact behavior depends on the VPN’s architecture (and whether it performs domain routing at the DNS level). That’s why verification matters.

Not every VPN app can do what you need. Look for these features:
- Split tunneling (ability to choose which apps/sites go through the VPN).
- Domain-based rules (you can list hostnames like
bank.comoraccounts.bank.com). - DNS handling options (some apps include “use VPN DNS” or “route DNS through tunnel”).
- On-demand or always-on mode that reliably activates for the matching domains.
If your VPN only supports “device-level” routing (all apps on/off), you can still disable Private Relay globally, but that defeats the “specific websites” requirement.
Step-by-step: set up split tunneling for target domains
Menu labels differ by VPN provider, so follow the structure below and map it to your app’s UI.
- Confirm iCloud > Private Relay is On.
- Install your VPN app and open it.
- Find Settings (or Preferences).
- Enable Split tunneling (or Selective routing).
- Add a rule for the target domains (examples):
example.comwww.example.comshop.example.com
- Set those domains to Route through VPN (wording may be “Use VPN” or “Include”).
- Set all other domains/apps to Direct (bypass VPN) if the app supports it; otherwise you’ll route everything and lose the “only specific sites” effect.
- Enable the VPN and test by visiting the target site in Safari.
If the VPN supports only app-based split tunneling (not domains), you can still approach the goal by using a dedicated browser app for that site—however, that’s less precise than domain rules.

Verify the traffic is bypassing Private Relay
You need evidence, not just “it feels different.” Here are practical verification approaches:

- Smudge & Fingerprint Resistant:Hydrophobic and oleophobic coating repels fingerprints, sweat, and oil—ensuring your screen stays clean, clear, and smooth to the touch.
- Compare observed IP: Visit an IP-check site (for example, a simple “what is my IP” page) on Safari with Private Relay on but VPN rules matching your target domain. Then compare it to the IP you see when you load the same site without the match.
- Check DNS: Some websites display resolved host/network characteristics. If your VPN routes DNS through the tunnel, you’ll often see consistency changes for matched domains.
- Use a proxy-detection page: Some services reveal whether traffic looks like it came from a relay/VPN network. Results vary by site, but mismatches are a useful signal.
If your IP/check results look identical for matched and unmatched domains, your domain matching rules likely aren’t being applied the way you expect (or the VPN isn’t intercepting DNS/traffic for those requests).
Method 3: Route One Site Through Another Network or Browser Profile
This method isn’t a true per-site Private Relay override, but it can solve the same problem in certain workflows—especially when you only need a few sites to work (banking portals, device management pages, restricted logins).
Use another network where Private Relay is disabled
If your environment allows it, you can test quickly by turning Private Relay off globally and only using it for troubleshooting on the needed network. The limitation is obvious: it’s global, not per-site.

Create a separate browser identity (limits apply)
iOS doesn’t give you a supported “Private Relay off for Safari only” switch, but you can reduce variable noise by using a separate browser and different site data.
For example, if the issue reproduces only in Safari, clear Safari’s site data (Method 4) or temporarily test the same URL in another browser. This won’t truly change Private Relay’s role for Safari, but it helps isolate caching, cookies, and tracking/anti-bot logic.
Method 4: If the Goal Is Site Compatibility, Try Fixes That Don’t Require Disabling Private Relay
Many “Private Relay breaks my site” reports come from bot protections, cached session signals, or geolocation checks that get triggered after the apparent network path changes.
Before you disable anything permanently, try these options.

Clear Safari data for the site
- Open Settings on iPhone.
- Tap Safari.
- Tap Advanced > Website Data.
- Search for the site’s name (or a close match).
- Swipe to delete the entry (or tap Edit then remove the specific site data).
- Reopen Safari and try the website again.
This removes cookies and stored site data that might have been marked suspicious when the connection looked like relayed traffic.
Turn off Private Relay only long enough to test
If the site works with Private Relay off, you’ve confirmed the root cause. Then you can choose whether to:
- keep Private Relay off permanently (fast), or
- use the VPN split-tunnel workaround (targeted).
Try a different browser (Firefox/Chrome) on iOS
Because Private Relay scope is primarily tied to Safari, switching browsers can sometimes bypass the behavior that the site dislikes. If a site works in Chrome but not Safari, you’ve learned something actionable: the issue is probably specific to Safari’s privacy routing.
That said, don’t assume the site’s server-side rules are identical across browsers. If the issue is IP/proxy detection, any network path differences can still matter.

If you’ve turned Private Relay off globally, or you’ve set up VPN split tunneling, and the site still behaves as if it’s relayed, work through the checklist below.
Confirm the setting is off (and not reverted by iCloud changes)
- Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Private Relay.
- Verify the toggle is actually Off.
- Close and reopen Safari.
If you see conflicting states, sign out/in of iCloud can occasionally restore feature defaults. Check the toggle again after any iCloud changes.
Flush Safari caches and reload correctly
- Force a reload by tapping Refresh or restarting Safari.
- Clear the specific site’s Safari data (Method 4) rather than wiping everything.
Some sites keep sessions in cookies tied to the apparent network path. If you don’t clear site data, you may keep hitting the “old” risk evaluation.

- Confirm VPN is Connected.
- Confirm split tunneling is enabled.
- Confirm the site URL’s host matches the rule (including subdomains like
www.). - If your VPN has a DNS option (examples: “Use VPN DNS” or “Route DNS through tunnel”), enable it so matched domains resolve through the tunnel too.
Common failures: domain list mismatch, redirects, and CDNs
A site might load:
- redirects from
example.comtowww.example.com(or to a different host) - resources from a CDN like
cdn.example-cdn.com - auth endpoints like
login.example.com
If your rule only covers the homepage domain but the server-side decision happens on the auth subdomain, the site may still fail. Add the relevant hostnames your login flow actually touches.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Expecting a per-site toggle that Apple doesn’t provide: iCloud Private Relay has a global on/off control, not a website allowlist.
- Adding only the homepage domain: login flows often use subdomains and redirected hosts.
- Assuming “VPN on” means “Private Relay is bypassed”: only split-tunnel matches reliably affect only selected domains.
- Testing without clearing cookies: a site might cache risk signals; use site data clearing.
- Not verifying: always compare the observed network behavior (IP/proxy detection) before concluding the workaround works.
FAQ
Can I disable iCloud Private Relay for just one website on iPhone?
No. iPhone doesn’t offer a per-website Private Relay setting. You can disable it globally or use a workaround like VPN split tunneling to route specific domains differently.
Will turning off Private Relay break iCloud features?
Turning off Private Relay only disables that privacy feature. Other iCloud services (like iCloud Drive, Photos, and iCloud Keychain) are separate and typically continue working normally.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does iCloud Private Relay work only on Wi‑Fi?
No. Private Relay is generally designed to apply beyond just Wi‑Fi, including when using cellular data—assuming your iOS and setup support it. That’s why “Wi‑Fi-only” fixes often don’t fully resolve issues.
My VPN split tunneling doesn’t seem to work. What should I check first?
First, verify your rule matches the exact hostnames involved in the request (including subdomains). Then confirm the VPN is routing DNS through the tunnel if your app supports it.
Why does the site behave differently in Chrome vs Safari?
Private Relay’s behavior is primarily tied to Safari traffic. If the site has proxy/VPN detection or different session logic per network path, the same URL can yield different results across browsers.
Is there any way to create a per-site exception without a VPN?
Without a VPN (or another traffic-routing method), there’s no supported per-site exception for Private Relay. Your closest non-VPN options are clearing Safari site data or temporarily turning Private Relay off to test compatibility.
Bottom Line
If you truly need “Private Relay off for only specific websites,” iPhone can’t do that directly. The most reliable approach is keeping iCloud Private Relay enabled and using a VPN app with split tunneling so only your chosen domains route through the tunnel.
If you just need the site to work quickly, turning off Private Relay globally is the fastest validation step—then you can decide whether to keep it off or switch to domain-based routing.
