Choose a built-in ringtone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds and vibration, then Ringtone.
- If your phone has two SIMs and asks which line to configure, select the relevant SIM.
- Tap a tone to preview it, then select it. Return to the previous screen or confirm as your phone prompts.
The tone list can differ by device or carrier. Samsung’s US sound and notification guide and Canadian ringtone guide describe the same starting path, while noting that screens and settings may vary.

Set a song or other audio file as your ringtone
First, make sure the audio file is stored on your phone. Samsung UK lists MP3, WMA, AAC, and FLAC as supported formats; its guidance says an M4A file must be converted to one of those formats. These format details come from Samsung’s UK instructions and may not describe every device or regional variation.
- Open Settings > Sounds and vibration > Ringtone.
- Tap the + button to add a file.
- Choose the audio file. If it is missing from Tracks, check Folders.
- Where available, turn on Play selected highlights only if you want the phone to use a selected portion rather than begin at the start.
- Tap Done.
Samsung UK states, “Tracks that you play via a streaming service cannot be set as ringtones.” In other words, access to a song in a streaming app is not the same as having a compatible local audio file. See Samsung UK’s custom-ringtone instructions, updated 5 June 2026.

Give one contact a different ringtone
The exact route depends on your phone’s software. One documented route is:
- Open Contacts and select the contact.
- Tap Edit, then View more.
- Tap Ringtone, choose a sound or add an audio file, then return to the contact.
- Save the contact.
On some versions, Samsung US documents another route: open the contact’s More options menu, choose Change ringtone/vibration, then tap Ringtone. Contacts stored only on a SIM card may not support a custom contact ringtone. Samsung’s US support page and UK guide show regional and software-dependent variations.

If the ringtone setting or file is missing
- You cannot find Ringtone: Start in Settings and look under Sounds and vibration. Labels or screen layouts may differ by model, region, and software version; Samsung’s Canada guidance specifically cautions that settings can vary.
- Your audio file is not listed: Check Folders as well as Tracks, and confirm the file is stored on the phone in a supported format according to the applicable regional guidance.
- You want to use a streaming song: Samsung says tracks played through streaming services cannot be set directly as ringtones; use a compatible audio file saved locally instead.
- You cannot set a contact-specific tone: Check whether the contact is stored only on the SIM, and try the contact-editing route available on your software version.
