To find a Windows 10 product key, first check whether you need one. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. If Windows is already activated with a digital license, there may be no product key to retrieve, because digital-license activation does not require you to enter one. If you do need a key, where to look depends on how you got Windows: the PC and its Certificate of Authenticity (COA), the Windows box, a retailer’s confirmation email or digital locker, your Microsoft order history, or the portal for your organization’s volume-licensing or MSDN program.
Check activation status before you search
Activation status decides whether you need a key at all. Microsoft’s Activate Windows guidance covers the Activation page, and the steps below follow that page’s layout.

- Select Start, then Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Activation.
- Read the status message. It states whether Windows is activated and how. If it reports a digital license, you do not need to find a key to keep the device activated, and buying another key is unnecessary.
- Check whether the license is linked to a Microsoft account. A linked account is the main way to reactivate after a significant hardware change (covered below).
Only if the device is not activated, or you are about to reinstall with a key you need to keep on record, should you continue with the location steps.
Where to find the key, by how you got Windows
The key’s location follows the purchase route. Use the table to find the first place to check for each route. Microsoft’s Find your Windows product key page lists these locations.

What a 25-character key looks like
A Windows product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. Microsoft’s Find your Windows product key guidance shows it as five groups of five characters, in the form XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. If the code you found has a different length or format, it is probably not a Windows product key.
Digital licenses: when there is no key to find
Microsoft defines the alternative directly. As its support page puts it: “A digital license is a method of activation in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that doesn’t require you to enter a product key.” The page is written by Microsoft Support and does not name an individual author. Devices with a digital license, including free upgrades and Store app purchases, are activated through their Microsoft-linked license rather than a key you can read off a label.

Reinstalling Windows 10 on an activated device
For a reinstall, the edition matters more than the key. Microsoft’s guidance on reinstalling Windows with installation media applies to this case.

- Start setup from the Windows 10 installation media.
- Install the same Windows 10 edition that the license is attached to.
- If setup asks for a product key, select I don’t have a product key.
- After installation, connect to the internet. Windows can activate online.
Installing a different edition from the one attached to the license can prevent activation from completing, so compare the two before you start.

Activation problems after a hardware change
A significant hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, can interrupt activation, because the device may no longer match the license. Link the digital license to a Microsoft account before a major change if you can, since that link is what makes reactivation possible.

What does not reveal a usable license
Some people look for a key with a BIOS or firmware command, or with a third-party key-finder program. The reviewed Microsoft guidance does not validate either method as a way to reveal a usable, transferable license. Keep these points in mind:

- Activation can succeed without any key being visible in the interface, when the device has a digital license.
- A key you find may belong to a volume-licensing or MSDN program, and its terms can restrict how it is used.
If neither a key nor a digital license exists
Only after you have checked activation status, email, packaging, Microsoft order history, and any organization portal should you consider buying. Microsoft’s activation page describes buying a Windows digital license through the Microsoft Store. If you buy a boxed copy instead, buy it from an authorized retailer, because the key is printed on a label or card inside the box.
