How Do You Choose a Smart Home Control System?

A shared control layer can make a fragmented smart home easier to manage. Start with your devices, protocols, and the features you need, then choose a compatible controller.

A smart home can have plenty of capable devices and still feel fragmented when each one needs its own app. The missing piece is usually a shared control and automation layer: a system that can bring supported devices together in routines and scenes. That might be a voice-assistant ecosystem you already use, a dedicated controller, or software such as Home Assistant. The right choice depends on the devices and protocols in your home, the features you need, and how much setup and maintenance you are willing to handle.

What a smart-home “brain” actually does

A controller gives supported devices a common place to configure, monitor, and automate them. Instead of opening separate apps to turn on lights, adjust a thermostat, or check a sensor, you can build a routine that coordinates those actions. A controller does not automatically make every product compatible: it can only manage devices, categories, and features its platform supports.

Start by listing the exact device models you own, the functions you use, and how each connects—such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Thread, or another radio protocol. Then check whether a candidate controller supports those models and functions. A compatibility label or shared standard is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every advanced feature appears in every platform.

What Matter changes—and what it does not

Matter is an open, IP-based standard intended to make compatible smart-home devices work across supported ecosystems. The Connectivity Standards Alliance describes its goal as making it easier for manufacturers to build devices compatible with smart-home and voice services. Connectivity Standards Alliance: Build With Matter

#1 Best Overall
Amazon Echo Hub (newest model), 8", Redesigned with customizable control and Alexa+, Compatible with thousands of devices
  • Echo Hub — An easy-to-use smart home control panel redesigned for your home. Arrange controls on your dashboard to quickly adjust devices, view cameras, start routines, and more.
  • Customize your dashboard — Arrange devices into sections and resize them to focus on what matters most. Create a personalized layout that matches how your family uses their connected devices.
  • Reimagined for your home - With an Alexa+ and compatible Ring subscription (sold separately), get Ring camera event summaries to stay in the know. Search your Ring footage using simple voice commands. Create routines by voice, activate modes to manage multiple devices at once, and chat with Alexa to easily control your smart home.
  • Home security for the whole family — Use Echo Hub to easily arm and disarm your compatible security system, making it easy for everyone in your family to manage home security. Use the Alexa app and compatible cameras, locks, alarms, and sensors to check in while you're out.
  • Works with thousands of Alexa compatible devices — WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Matter, Sidewalk, and Thread devices sync seamlessly with the built-in smart home hub.

Matter is an application-level protocol, not a new radio. It uses IPv6 over a local network: commonly Wi-Fi or Ethernet, or Thread for devices designed to use Thread. Bluetooth Low Energy can be used during commissioning, the process of adding a device. Thread and Matter therefore solve different parts of the connection puzzle. Home Assistant: Matter

Matter support is not universal across device types or features. Google notes that its ecosystem does not yet support every device type, and platform support can differ. Verify the exact device category, model, and functions you care about with the controller you plan to use. Google Home Developers: What is Matter?

Choose a control layer that fits your home

Use the ecosystem you already have

If your household already relies on a voice-assistant platform, its app and compatible hub may provide enough shared control for everyday routines. This is often the simplest first step, but support depends on the exact hub or speaker model and the devices you want to add. For example, Google says its users need a Matter-enabled hub for Matter setup and local control; Amazon documents compatible Echo devices as Matter administrators. Thread devices may additionally require a Thread border router. Google Home and Nest Help: Prepare your smart home for Matter Amazon Alexa Smart Home: Connect Your Device to Alexa with Matter

Use a cross-platform controller

Home Assistant can bring supported devices into a shared control layer while working alongside Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa. It can also expose supported devices to those platforms. This can reduce app switching without forcing every household member to abandon the services they already use. Its integrations vary, so check support for specific devices and capabilities rather than assuming that a device available in its manufacturer’s app will also be fully available in Home Assistant. Decide whether you need dedicated hardware

A separate hub is not always necessary. Some households already have a suitable Matter controller or Thread border router; Home Assistant can also run on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, NUC, or virtual machine. Home Assistant lists Green as its plug-and-play hardware option and recommends it for most people. Choose dedicated hardware if you value a straightforward, always-on appliance; consider existing computing equipment if you are comfortable setting it up and maintaining it. Radio needs depend on the devices you own, so identify those before buying an accessory or hub. Home Assistant: FAQ

Compare the options on the points that affect daily use

What to compare Questions to answer Why it matters
Device and feature coverage Does the controller support your exact models, device categories, and the functions you rely on? Compatibility with a standard does not ensure every feature is implemented or exposed by every platform. Google Home Developers
Local and cloud dependence Which device commands and automations work locally? Which depend on an internet connection or manufacturer’s service? Matter supports local interoperability, but does not define cloud interfaces or require endpoints to have internet access. Remote access, diagnostics, vendor-specific features, and some update functions may still rely on cloud services. AWS Prescriptive Guidance
Network and radio requirements Does the device use Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or Thread? Does your controller provide the necessary Matter support or Thread border router? Is IPv6 enabled on the network? Matter uses IP networking, while Thread is one possible transport. Controller and network requirements vary by device and platform. Home Assistant: Matter Google Home and Nest Help
Setup and upkeep Would you rather use a plug-and-play appliance, or configure software on hardware you already own and maintain integrations? The easier initial setup may involve dedicated hardware; a self-managed installation can offer a different balance of flexibility and ongoing responsibility. Home Assistant: FAQ
Privacy and control Where do automations run? Which cloud connections are optional, and which features stop working without them? Home Assistant says supported local protocols and integrations can keep some functions on the home network, but cloud-only devices remain dependent on their provider. Home Assistant: FAQ

Check local control before relying on it

“Local” describes where a particular function can operate; it does not mean the entire product is independent of the internet. A Matter device may communicate locally with a controller, while remote access or a manufacturer-specific feature uses a cloud service. A cloud-only integration may stop responding if its provider is unavailable, even when other local devices and automations continue to work. Manage lights, thermostats, and more using the display or your voice. With Omnisense technology, you can activate routines via temperature, presence, or visual ID detection.
  • Crystal-clear video calls: Video calls feel natural on the vibrant 11" screen with a centered, auto-framing camera, 3.3x zoom, and noise reduction technology. Use live view to check in on your family, pets, and more while you're away.

Before choosing a platform, check the behavior you need when the internet is down: local switches, scheduled routines, voice commands, remote access, notifications, and device updates may have different dependencies. Favor the local functions that matter most to your household, and treat cloud access as a separate capability to verify.

A practical way to get started

  1. Inventory devices. Record each model, its connection type, the app or platform it currently uses, and the features you want to control.
  2. Check the controller you already own. Look up exact model support, Matter capabilities, and whether it includes a Thread border router if your devices need one.
  3. Test one useful routine. Choose a small group of supported devices and confirm that the routine works from the shared controller, not just from each maker’s app.
  4. Check what happens offline. Identify which commands and automations still run without internet and which depend on a cloud service.
  5. Add hardware only to solve a known gap. If your current platform lacks needed coverage or radio support, choose a controller or dedicated hub that addresses that specific requirement.
