Unlike an ordinary lake, which is exposed to the atmosphere even when surface ice covers it, a subglacial lake is sealed below thick ice, under high pressure, in permanent darkness and usually close to the pressure-adjusted freezing point. An ocean is a connected marine water body; a subglacial lake is a discrete basin beneath grounded ice, although its water can eventually drain toward the sea.
The key differences are therefore physical setting, pressure, temperature, light, circulation and effects on ice—not a simple fresh-versus-salt distinction. Chemistry varies among lakes, and some subglacial lakes are isolated while others form active, pressurized drainage networks.

What counts as a subglacial lake?
The Australian Antarctic Data Centre’s definitions provide the simplest test: “subglacial” means beneath a glacier, while a lake is an enclosed body of water from which the sea is excluded. Put together, a subglacial lake is an enclosed basin beneath a glacier or ice sheet, commonly at the boundary between ice and bedrock.
A lake with winter ice on its surface is still an ordinary surface lake. Its water remains in contact, directly or indirectly, with the atmosphere and receives weather, sunlight and seasonal temperature changes. A subglacial lake is covered by the glacier or ice sheet itself. Kilometres of ice may separate the water from the surface.

The distinction from an ocean is also about setting and connectivity. The ocean is a marine system connected with the sea and linked to large-scale atmospheric, tidal and ocean circulation. A subglacial lake can feed water to streams beneath an ice sheet and ultimately to the ocean, but the lake basin itself remains a separate, enclosed freshwater or saline body beneath grounded ice.
Subglacial lakes, surface lakes and oceans compared
| Feature | Ordinary surface lake | Subglacial lake | Ocean |
|---|---|---|---|
| Setting | Open to the atmosphere; seasonal or permanent surface ice may form | Below a glacier or ice sheet, usually at the ice-bed interface | Marine water body connected with the sea |
| Pressure | Close to atmospheric pressure at the surface, increasing with depth | High pressure from the overlying ice, in addition to water depth | Atmospheric pressure at the surface, increasing with depth |
| Temperature | Varies with climate, season, depth and circulation | Often near the pressure-adjusted freezing point; water can remain liquid below 0°C | Depends on latitude, depth, circulation, salinity and pressure |
| Light | Usually receives sunlight, though depth and turbidity limit it | Permanently dark beneath thick ice | Sunlight reaches mainly the upper ocean |
| Water exchange | May exchange with air, streams, groundwater and precipitation | May be isolated or connected to pressurized channels and neighboring lakes | Broad exchange with the atmosphere, continents and global ocean circulation |
| Salinity | Often fresh, but saline lakes also exist | Variable; salinity is not a defining category | Seawater is generally saline |
| Wider influence | Local ecosystems and drainage | Can change friction beneath ice, ice-stream speed and freshwater delivery | Global heat, salt and water circulation |
These are general contrasts rather than rules for every location. An unusual surface lake, a briny subglacial basin or a partly isolated coastal water body can depart from the typical pattern.
How can water stay liquid beneath Antarctic ice?
Three conditions work together. First, thick ice insulates the bed from the much colder surface. Second, geothermal heat rising from Earth and friction generated as ice moves can melt basal ice. Third, bedrock topography and the shape of the ice underside create depressions where meltwater can collect instead of flowing away immediately.
Pressure changes the freezing point. The weight of hundreds or thousands of metres of ice presses on the water, allowing it to remain liquid at temperatures below the 0°C freezing point familiar at the surface. The exact balance among geothermal heat, friction, ice thickness, water pressure and drainage differs from one basin to another, so no single temperature describes all subglacial lakes.
Lake Vostok as a prominent example
The British Antarctic Survey describes Lake Vostok beneath East Antarctica as the largest and best-known example in its overview. That account reports a depth of more than 500 metres and an area approximately comparable to Lake Ontario. These are overview figures for that lake, not measurements that should be generalized to every subglacial basin.
Subglacial water is found in more places than central Antarctica. A 2022 review in Nature Reviews Earth & Environment inventoried 773 lakes worldwide: 675 in Antarctica, 64 in Greenland, two beneath Devon Ice Cap, six beneath Icelandic ice caps and 26 beneath valley glaciers. The total reflects that review’s mapping and date; it is not a permanent census. Improved radar and satellite coverage can add, merge or reclassify lakes.

Are all subglacial lakes isolated?
No. Isolation and connectivity form a continuum. Some basins retain water for long periods beneath relatively stable ice. Others are linked by channels or conduits and can fill, overflow or drain when pressure conditions change.

A stable reservoir may have limited exchange with neighboring water bodies. Water can accumulate over long timescales, while the thick ice roof keeps it dark and insulated. Scientists must infer much of its chemistry and circulation from geophysical measurements or from material frozen onto the underside of the ice.
Active, pressurized networks
In a connected system, water pressure can open or close pathways beneath the ice. NASA’s account of West Antarctica describes lakes that fill and drain in response to pressure from the overlying ice. A drainage event can move a large volume of water through the basal system without producing an open surface river.
NASA’s ICESat-2 visualization explains how researchers detect this hidden activity: when a lake gains or loses water, the ice surface above it rises or falls slightly. Laser altimetry measures those subtle changes in elevation. The satellite does not see through kilometres of ice; it observes the surface signature produced by movement below.
Why do these hidden lakes matter to ice flow?
Water at the ice-bed interface can reduce friction between the moving ice and bedrock. A wetter bed may allow an ice stream to slide faster, while a change in drainage can redistribute pressure and alter where sliding occurs. This couples subglacial hydrology to the motion of the ice sheet.

NASA’s Sea Level Change portal describes subglacial lakes, floods and flowing water as part of a system that influences basal friction, ice-flow speed and drainage toward downstream waters. The effect is not that every lake suddenly accelerates an entire ice sheet. Rather, local water pressure and connected pathways can change the mechanics of particular glaciers and ice streams, which is why ice-sheet models include basal hydrology.

A historical ice-stream example
NASA Earth Observatory reported in 2007 that the Recovery Ice Stream delivered about 35 billion tons of ice to the ocean annually. That is a historical, source-specific rate, not a current measurement and not a representative value for all ice streams. It illustrates why scientists study hidden water systems: the pathways beneath an ice stream can be relevant to the amount of ice reaching the ocean.
Subglacial water can eventually discharge into the ocean, carrying freshwater and sediments. The route does not turn the lake into an ocean; it connects a hidden inland reservoir to the wider marine system through drainage.
Are subglacial lakes fresh or salty?
Salinity alone cannot identify a subglacial lake. Many are expected to be fresh because their water comes from melted ice, but dissolved minerals, long residence times, bedrock reactions and limited exchange can change chemistry. Some connected systems may receive water from several sources.

Those values are indirect estimates, not direct sampling of the entire lake. They support the idea that Lake Vostok is far less salty than seawater, while also showing why the comparison should not be treated as a universal rule for all subglacial lakes.
Ordinary lakes are not uniformly fresh either. Closed-basin lakes can become highly saline through evaporation, so “lake” and “freshwater” are not synonyms. The reliable category difference is location beneath ice, not a particular salt concentration.
What are conditions like beneath the ice?
A 2012 British Antarctic Survey review describes Antarctic subglacial lakes as high-pressure, low-temperature and permanently dark environments. It summarizes conditions of approximately 350 atmospheres and about −3°C for Antarctic subglacial lakes. These figures characterize the extreme conditions discussed in that review; they are not universal readings for every lake under every glacier.

Light and circulation
No sunlight reaches a lake sealed beneath thick ice, so photosynthesis based on surface light is unavailable. Mixing must come from density differences, geothermal inputs, inflowing or outflowing water and circulation within the basin. Connected lakes can exchange water and nutrients; isolated lakes may be more strongly layered or chemically distinct.

What is known about life?
The absence of sunlight does not prove the absence of life. Microbes could obtain energy from chemical reactions involving minerals, dissolved compounds or geothermal sources. However, evidence must be described carefully. The 2012 review noted that lake water had not been sampled directly at that time; proposed chemistry and microbial evidence for Lake Vostok were inferred largely from accreted lake ice, material that froze onto the underside of the overlying ice.
NASA Astrobiology distinguishes closed, isolated systems from lakes connected to subglacial rivers and emphasizes that salinity, circulation and layering can differ between habitats. A finding from one lake therefore cannot be assumed to describe every subglacial environment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How are subglacial lakes detected?
Because the water is hidden, scientists combine several indirect methods:
- Ice-penetrating radar: radar reflections can reveal a smooth, water-like interface beneath the ice and help map basin geometry.
- Satellite laser altimetry: repeated measurements of the ice surface identify small rises and falls associated with filling or drainage, as demonstrated with ICESat-2.
- Ice-surface motion measurements: changes in flow speed and elevation can indicate altered basal lubrication or water pressure.
- Gravity and topographic data: regional measurements help constrain buried basins and the amount of water they may contain.
- Drilling and direct sampling: hot-water drilling can reach some sites, but it is specialized field infrastructure and may be difficult to use without disturbing a contained environment.
These techniques do not all provide the same kind of evidence. Radar and topography map likely water and basin shape; altimetry reveals changes at the surface; chemistry and biology remain much harder to establish without direct, carefully controlled access.

“A lake covered by ice is subglacial.”
Not if the ice is only seasonal or floating on the lake surface. A subglacial lake lies beneath a glacier or ice sheet, with the ice mass itself forming the roof and overburden.
Best Value
“Every subglacial lake is a sealed, motionless pocket.”
Some are comparatively isolated, but others fill and drain through pressurized networks. Their water levels and the ice surface above can change.
“Subglacial means freshwater.”
Salinity varies. The category is defined by the lake’s position beneath ice, not by a fixed chemical composition.
“A connection to the sea makes it an ocean.”
Only if the water body itself is a marine body connected with the sea. A subglacial lake can drain toward the ocean while remaining a separate inland basin.
“A satellite photographs the lake directly.”
Laser altimetry measures changes on the ice surface. Radar and other geophysical methods infer the buried water; ordinary optical imagery cannot see through kilometres of solid ice.
Why the distinction matters
For glaciologists, the distinction identifies a hidden part of the ice-sheet plumbing system. Water production, storage and drainage influence basal friction and ice motion. For climate and sea-level studies, that coupling helps explain why an ice sheet can respond unevenly across different glaciers and why freshwater eventually reaching the ocean may follow complex, delayed pathways.
For planetary science, subglacial lakes also provide natural examples of dark, pressurized water environments. They are useful analogues for considering whether life could persist where sunlight is absent but liquid water and chemical energy remain. The analogy is informative only when researchers keep each lake’s pressure, chemistry, circulation and degree of isolation separate.
The short answer
An ordinary lake is a surface basin; an ocean is a connected marine system; a subglacial lake is an enclosed basin beneath a glacier or ice sheet. Thick ice supplies pressure and insulation, geothermal and frictional heat help keep water liquid, and darkness separates the habitat from surface lakes. Some subglacial lakes are quiet reservoirs, while others are active parts of pressurized drainage networks that can change how ice flows toward the sea.
