Smartphones make contact more portable and can make frequent exchanges easier; the survey describes reported habits, not proof that phones alone caused a universal change in communication.
Which communication modes do people use most?
Pew Research Center’s 2025 report says, “Texting is the most common form of communication between friends.” That finding refers to U.S. adults who said they had close friends and reported how often they communicated with them. The survey was fielded September 3–15, 2024, and measured frequent contact: at least a few times a week or daily.

These figures come from respondents with close friends, not all U.S. adults. They indicate how commonly each mode was used at that frequency; they do not measure total time spent communicating or the quality of friendships. Pew Research Center’s report on how Americans communicate with friends provides the survey details.

A smartphone brings several ways to communicate into one portable device. A text can be sent and answered at different times, while a phone or video call is more immediate. Social platforms provide another route for sharing and responding, and in-person conversation remains distinct from all of them. These modes differ in timing and in how much voice or visual information they convey; the survey figures do not rate their effectiveness or relationship quality.

That combination can make it easier to stay in touch during ordinary routines or across distance, while calls and face-to-face meetings still serve people who want a live exchange or shared time together. Frequency alone cannot show why a person chose a channel, what was discussed, or whether a message supplemented or replaced another interaction.
How do communication habits vary among people?
In the same Pew survey of U.S. adults with close friends, reports of frequent contact varied by age and gender. These are patterns across surveyed groups, not rules for individuals: someone’s age or gender does not determine which channel they prefer. The results also describe frequency, not a ranking of which groups have stronger friendships or communicate better. The report’s age and gender breakdowns show the measured differences.

What an older teen survey found
A 2015 Pew Research Center survey found that 58% of U.S. teens with smartphone access preferred texting to communicate with their closest friend, compared with 25% of teens without smartphone access. The contrast is between those two access groups in that survey; it is not a current estimate of teen preferences, nor does it establish that smartphone access caused the difference. Pew’s 2015 report on teens, technology and friendships gives the historical context.
Do digital conversations replace face-to-face contact?
Survey findings from the pandemic period indicate that digital communication could help people maintain connection while in-person interaction continued alongside it. Those responses reflect an unusual period and should not be treated as evidence that online contact simply replaces meeting face to face. In the 2024 U.S. adult survey, 29% of respondents with close friends also reported meeting one in person at least a few times a week or daily.

Neither result can establish how much in-person contact an individual would have had without a smartphone. The surveys describe reported practices and experiences, rather than isolating smartphones as the cause of changes in relationships.

Mobile communication is also important in other settings, though evidence from a defined group of countries should not be mistaken for a worldwide smartphone estimate. In a 2019 Pew Research Center survey across 11 emerging economies, a median of 82% of mobile-phone users said they had used their phone to send text messages in the past year. A median of 93% said mobile phones had mostly helped them keep in touch with people who live far away. These are medians across the countries surveyed, among mobile-phone users; the questions concern mobile phones broadly, not smartphones alone. What the evidence can—and cannot—tell us
- It can show reported habits: texting was the most common frequently used mode among surveyed U.S. adults with close friends, while social media, calls, video calls and in-person meetings also featured.
- It can show differences across surveyed groups: age and gender patterns in the adult survey, and the historical difference between teens with and without smartphone access in 2015, describe group-level responses.
- It cannot prove a single causal transformation: these surveys do not establish that smartphones alone changed communication styles, reduced personal connection, or displaced face-to-face relationships.
- It does not measure communication quality: frequency figures do not show whether a particular channel creates closer friendships or better conversations.
