Scientists test general relativity by measuring the gravitational waves emitted as a newly merged black hole settles, then checking whether the signal’s frequencies, decay times and inferred remnant properties match general relativity’s predictions. They also compare the remnant inferred after the merger with the one predicted from the earlier inspiral. These are consistency tests: so far, the analyzed observations are consistent with general relativity within their measurement limits, not proof that the theory holds in every possible setting.
What black-hole ringdown is
A binary black-hole gravitational-wave signal is commonly divided into three phases: inspiral, merger and ringdown. During the inspiral, the two black holes orbit one another and lose energy by emitting gravitational waves. They merge into a single remnant. That remnant is initially distorted; as it settles into a stable rotating black hole, it radiates away the distortion as a short, fading signal called ringdown.

A useful, limited analogy is the fading tones of a struck bell. Ringdown is not a sound, and a black hole is not a bell, but both can be described by oscillations that lose strength over time. The oscillations of a black hole are called quasi-normal modes (QNMs).
What general relativity predicts
In general relativity (GR), a settled rotating black hole is described by its mass and spin. Those properties determine the frequencies and damping times of its QNMs. Frequency describes how rapidly a mode oscillates; damping time describes how quickly it fades. As LIGO’s summary puts it, “In a similar way, general relativity requires the black hole ringdown to exhibit particular frequencies and damping times.” (LIGO Scientific Collaboration)

That makes ringdown a way to test whether the observed remnant behaves as GR predicts. Researchers estimate properties of the post-merger signal and compare them with the expected spectrum. They also check whether the mass and spin inferred from ringdown agree with estimates from the earlier signal.
The logic is that GR connects several pieces of the same event. The earlier binary and its merger predict a remnant; the remnant’s mass and spin predict its ringdown spectrum. Scientists can therefore compare the waveform’s measured content with predictions made from different portions of the signal, rather than relying on one measurement alone.
How scientists test a merger’s ringdown
1. Separate the signal into phases
Researchers analyze different portions of the observed gravitational-wave signal. The inspiral carries information about the orbiting black holes; the merger and post-merger signal carry information about the formation and settling of the remnant. GR links these stages: the earlier binary predicts properties of the final black hole, while the remnant’s mass and spin predict its ringdown modes.

2. Measure oscillation frequencies and decay
Scientists model ringdown as damped oscillations and estimate the mode properties the data support. Under GR, the mode frequencies and damping times are tied to the remnant’s mass and spin, rather than being arbitrary values. A test asks whether the measured signal is compatible with those predictions, accounting for the uncertainty in the data and model.
One way to think about the measurement is to ask which signal features are being compared: the frequency of an oscillation, how quickly it fades, or the remnant mass and spin implied by a mode. A single detected harmonic is usually the case and can be checked against the remnant properties inferred from before and during merger. Resolving multiple harmonics or overtones makes it possible to compare separate mode-based estimates with one another.
3. Compare the pre-merger and post-merger remnant
In the inspiral-merger-ringdown consistency test, researchers infer the final black hole’s mass and spin twice: first from the lower-frequency inspiral, then from the higher-frequency post-inspiral signal, which includes merger and ringdown. They check whether the two estimates overlap as GR predicts. The comparison is most informative when both portions of the signal are strong enough to analyze separately.

For GW150914, the LIGO/Virgo Collaboration’s 2016 test reported that mass and spin estimates from the low-frequency inspiral and high-frequency post-inspiral data were mutually consistent. It also found that data after the signal peak were consistent with the least-damped QNM predicted from the remnant’s mass and spin. (The GW150914 GR test)

4. Look for multiple modes
A single detectable harmonic can support consistency checks against properties inferred earlier in the signal. If researchers can resolve more than one harmonic, they can independently infer remnant properties from each and check whether the estimates fit one Kerr black hole, the rotating black-hole solution used in GR. This is a more direct test of the no-hair idea: in this context, the remnant’s black-hole properties are fixed by its mass and spin.
Multiple modes are difficult to resolve because ringdown is brief and many events do not have enough signal-to-noise ratio. LIGO’s O4b summary describes the distinction this way: “Detecting a single harmonic —which is usually the case— allows for consistency checks with parameters inferred before and during the merger, while resolving more than one harmonic and checking the consistency of the black hole parameters inferred from each provides a direct test of the no-hair theorem.” (LIGO Scientific Collaboration)
What the GW150914 results do—and do not—show
GW150914, the first gravitational-wave signal from a binary black-hole merger announced by LIGO, has been used in several ringdown analyses. Their numerical results describe particular analyses of that event; they should not be read as universal precision figures for all black-hole mergers.
- 2016 consistency test: The LIGO/Virgo Collaboration found the remnant mass and spin inferred from inspiral and post-inspiral data to be mutually consistent, and the signal after its peak to be consistent with the least-damped predicted mode. (Publication record)
- 2019 mode analysis: Isi and colleagues reported evidence at 3.6 sigma for the fundamental QNM and at least one overtone in an analysis beginning at the signal peak. They characterized the no-hair test based on comparing remnant mass and spin at approximately the 10% level, and an independent check of the first-overtone frequency as agreeing with the no-hair hypothesis at approximately the 20% level. These are the authors’ characterizations of that GW150914 analysis. (Isi et al., 2019)
The two studies ask related but distinct questions using different analyses. Evidence for modes in one event does not, by itself, establish that every alternative theory is excluded or that every black-hole merger will yield a similarly precise test. In particular, the 3.6-sigma result refers to the mode evidence in the 2019 analysis; the approximately 10% and 20% figures describe its stated no-hair comparisons, not a universal accuracy for ringdown.
What larger event samples add
Tests across a catalog of merger events can probe consistency beyond any one remnant. The GWTC-4.0 remnant paper record describes an analysis of 42 events from the first part of the fourth observing run alongside earlier events. Its selected confident signals were seen in at least two detectors and met a false-alarm-rate threshold of no more than 10−3 per year. The paper describes three ringdown tests and four echo tests. That analysis reports overall consistency of the remnants with GR. Among the GWTC-4.0 events it analyzed, GW231226_101520 provided the tightest single-event constraint on the damping time of the dominant (2, 2, 0) QNM in the frequency-domain ringdown analysis. The collaboration also reported the GR prediction at the boundary of a 98.6% (99.3%) credible region in a hierarchical analysis, with bootstrap ranges reflecting finite-sample uncertainty. It noted that the apparent significance decreases when GW250114 is included, and concluded there is no strong evidence for a deviation from GR.
Separately, the LIGO Scientific Collaboration’s O4b summary reports a subdominant harmonic alongside the dominant one in ringdown analyses of GW250114 and GW240621. It describes GW250114 as enabling particularly precise constraints on possible ringdown deviations. These statements concern those event analyses; the summary does not make their precision a general property of ringdown measurements. (O4b GR science summary)
These results illustrate why event-level and catalog-level claims should be kept distinct. A single event can provide a particularly tight constraint on a particular quantity, while a catalog analysis combines information across events and must account for the sample’s finite size. The reported credible-region boundary is not, by itself, evidence that GR has been falsified; the paper’s overall conclusion is that the analyzed remnants are consistent with GR and show no strong evidence for a deviation.
Other searches: waveform deviations and echoes
Scientists do not only check whether observed modes match the standard GR spectrum. They also test parameterized changes to waveform predictions and search for post-merger echoes. Echoes are not expected in standard GR black-hole ringdown, but they have been proposed in some alternatives to the usual black-hole picture.
The GWTC-4.0 remnant paper reports no evidence for echoes in the events it analyzed. A non-detection constrains only the echo models, signal strengths and parameter ranges covered by that particular search; it does not rule out every possible alternative. (GWTC-4.0 remnant tests)
These searches ask different questions from the mass-and-spin consistency test. A mode test compares measured frequencies or damping times with GR expectations; a parameterized-deviation test checks specified changes to waveform predictions; an echo search looks for a proposed post-merger feature absent from standard GR ringdown. Their conclusions therefore depend on the data segment, signal content and assumptions of the particular analysis.

How to interpret a result
“Consistent with GR” means that the analyzed data do not require a departure from GR at the sensitivity of the test. It is not the same as proving GR must be correct in every circumstance. A measured deviation would also need scrutiny: researchers must distinguish a genuine departure from noise, instrumental effects, and limits in waveform modeling.

Frequently asked questions
What does black-hole ringdown tell scientists?
It provides a short post-merger signal whose oscillation frequencies and damping times can be compared with the values GR predicts from the remnant’s mass and spin. It also lets researchers check whether the remnant inferred after merger agrees with predictions from the earlier inspiral.
Is one ringdown mode enough to test general relativity?
A single mode can support a consistency check with remnant properties inferred before and during merger. Resolving more than one mode provides a stronger, more direct no-hair test by allowing researchers to compare the black-hole parameters inferred from distinct modes. Many events do not have enough signal-to-noise ratio to resolve multiple modes.
Has ringdown proved the no-hair theorem?
No. Specific analyses, including the 2019 GW150914 study, have tested whether the inferred properties are compatible with the no-hair prediction. Their results apply to the event and method studied, with stated measurement limits; they do not rule out every alternative theory.

The Bottom Line
Scientists test GR with ringdown by comparing a remnant’s measured modes and inferred mass and spin with predictions from GR, and by checking those properties against the earlier inspiral. Multiple resolved modes and larger event catalogs strengthen the tests, but current findings remain consistency results with finite measurement limits—not proof that GR is universally correct or that alternatives are impossible.
