They establish age first by placing the fossil-bearing layer in a relative sequence and, when suitable rocks or minerals are available, by numerical dating. Often the dated material is associated with the fossil—not the fossil itself.
What counts as a fossil—and how scientists identify one
A fossil can be recognizable remains of past life, such as a bone, shell, or leaf, or evidence of an organism’s activity, such as a track, burrow, or impression. Fossils therefore include both body fossils and trace fossils; a complete skeleton is not required. The U.S. Geological Survey’s overview of fossils and geological time describes these kinds of evidence.

Identification is a comparison, not a matter of matching every find to a single universal key. Scientists examine the specimen’s shape and other preserved features, consider the rock and location where it was found, and compare it with fossils already described. Other fossils in the same layers can help: distinctive assemblages—the groups of fossils found together—are associated with particular intervals of geological time and can help correlate rock units from different places. The National Park Service explains this principle in its account of faunal succession.

How do scientists date fossils?
Dating usually combines two kinds of evidence. Relative dating establishes which layers or geological events came earlier or later; numerical dating estimates an age in years from appropriate materials. These answer different questions, and a numerical result does not automatically give the exact time an organism lived or was buried.

Relative dating: placing layers and fossils in order
In an undisturbed sequence of rock layers, lower layers are generally older than those above them. Geologists also use relationships such as one feature cutting across another to work out the order of events. Fossils add another ordering: recognizable groups appear in a succession through the rock record. Index fossils and fossil biozones can help constrain the relative age of sedimentary layers, while characteristic assemblages help match layers between locations. Relative dating gives a sequence or bracket, not a calendar age in years. See the National Park Service’s explanations of geologic dating techniques and geologic time.
Numerical dating: estimating an age in years
Radiometric dating measures radioactive parent isotopes and the products of their decay in materials suited to a particular isotope system. Different methods apply to different minerals and rocks. For example, the National Park Service describes uranium-lead dating of zircon and potassium-argon dating of volcanic rocks and minerals in its guide to radiometric age dating.

Fossils are commonly found in sedimentary rock, which is often not the material directly dated by these radiometric methods. Instead, geologists may date suitable volcanic ash or other associated rocks within, above, or below a fossil-bearing sequence. Those results constrain the sequence’s age, and the fossil’s age is inferred from its geological relationship to the dated material. The date therefore belongs first to the tested rock or mineral and the event it records—not necessarily to the fossil’s formation, death, or burial.
Radiocarbon: for relatively recent organic remains
Radiocarbon dating is for relatively recent material that was once living, not for ancient fossils generally. The National Park Service gives an effective range of about 100 to 50,000 years in its 2018 guide to radiometric age dating. The USGS also notes that carbon dating does not directly date rocks in its beginner’s guide to dating rocks. For older fossil-bearing strata, geologists need other evidence and suitable dating methods.

How to interpret an age estimate
An age estimate is meaningful only alongside what was tested, how it was dated, what geological event the result represents, and the stated uncertainty. Analytical methods have measurement error, and geological relationships can complicate interpretation. Geologists improve confidence by accounting for those complications and using multiple techniques where possible, as the National Park Service explains in its radiometric dating guide.
- Relative age: tells you that one layer or event is older or younger than another; it is not an age in years.
- Numerical age: estimates an age in years for the material and event measured, with analytical uncertainty.
- Inferred fossil age: uses the fossil’s position and relationships in the rock sequence; it may be constrained by dated material nearby rather than measured directly from the fossil.
So when you see an age reported for a fossil, check whether it is a direct measurement of the fossil or an estimate based on the layer and associated rocks. That distinction is central to interpreting what the date actually tells you.
