How Do Origami-Inspired Rover Wheels Work on Uneven Lunar Terrain?

Origami-inspired rover wheels use folding geometry for compact packaging, low-clearance travel and variable width. PUFFER and OriWheelBot demonstrate different mechanisms, while lunar regolith still demands partial-gravity, vacuum and dust testing.

Origami-inspired rover wheels are not one flight-proven lunar technology. The term covers at least two different ideas: NASA/JPL’s PUFFER robot, whose folding printed-circuit-board body and wheels make a compact, crouching scout, and the 2023 OriWheelBot, whose Miura-origami wheels change width while walking on sand. These mechanisms can improve packaging, obstacle access, compliance or soft-soil mobility, but published demonstrations remain Earth-based. They do not establish that an origami wheel has flown to the Moon or is certified for lunar regolith.

What “origami-inspired rover wheel” means

Folding is useful in rover design for more than one reason. A structure may fold so it fits inside a lander, change its shape to pass an obstacle, absorb an impact, or alter how it loads loose soil. Those functions should not be treated as a single wheel architecture.

  • PUFFER: NASA/JPL’s Pop-Up Flat Folding Explorer Robot uses an origami-inspired folding printed-circuit-board chassis. Its wheels fold over the body, and the robot can crouch under overhangs and lower its center of gravity.
  • OriWheelBot: A 2023 research robot uses Miura-origami wheels that vary their width to pass between obstacles and studies two ways of moving on sand.

Neither source describes an integrated origami wheel system operating on the Moon. NASA’s VIPER rover provides a separate comparison: it uses active suspension, independent steering and wheel-lifting motions for very soft soil, not origami wheels.

How PUFFER uses folding for access and stability

A printed-circuit-board chassis that folds

PUFFER builds its body from a flexible, folding printed-circuit-board structure. Folding lets the small scout pack into a very small volume for transport. Once deployed, the flexible body can absorb impacts rather than transmitting every shock through a rigid frame.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

The same geometry lets the robot crouch. Lowering the body reduces its center of gravity, which helps when it climbs or traverses an uneven surface. A low profile also allows it to approach spaces beneath overhangs that would block a conventional box-shaped rover.

Wheels that fold over the body

PUFFER’s two wheels can fold over the body for crawling into tight spaces. The wheels carry treads for inclines, while the body performs a small-robot “skittering walk”: the machine inches forward one wheel at a time instead of relying on a fast, continuous drive.

This is an access and packaging solution, not a claim that the wheel can reshape itself to match every rock or soil condition. The published description concerns a small scout robot and Earth testing, so its behavior cannot be scaled directly to a heavily loaded lunar rover.

What PUFFER’s range figure means

NASA/JPL reported about 625 metres on one charge over a level dirt path in 2017. That is a test result for PUFFER under the stated conditions; the distance can vary with instrument use. It is not a lunar-distance prediction, a slope rating or a measurement in vacuum and lunar gravity.

How OriWheelBot changes wheel width

Miura-origami geometry

OriWheelBot uses a Miura-origami pattern in its wheels. Folding the pattern changes the wheel’s lateral geometry, allowing the wheel to become narrower or wider. The practical purpose is clearance: a robot can reduce its width to pass between obstacles and then use a wider configuration when that geometry is advantageous for walking on sand.

The important distinction is that the wheel changes width, not that it magically eliminates obstacles. Width adjustment helps only when the robot has enough clearance, traction and stability to complete the manoeuvre. Rocks, steep slopes and loose soil still impose separate limits.

Two sand-locomotion modes

The OriWheelBot abstract identifies digging and pushing as two ways of moving on sand. It reports that pushing is more conducive to walking on sand. In a pushing mode, the wheel and surrounding soil interact to generate forward force; in a digging mode, the wheel penetrates and displaces grains, which can increase resistance and disturb the surface.

The reported experiments found a 40% change in wheel width, a 66.7% load-carrying ratio on flat sand and movement on a 17-degree sand incline. These are figures from the paper’s sand-walking experiments, reported by its authors in 2023. They are not lunar-field measurements and have not been independently established here as flight qualification data.

How folding mechanisms help on uneven ground

1. Packaging and deployment

A folding chassis or wheel can occupy less volume during launch and deployment. Smaller packed volume can make it possible to carry several scouts or place a rover in a constrained lander bay. The trade-off is that hinges, flexible members and fold lines must survive launch loads, abrasive dust and repeated motion without jamming.

2. Clearance beneath obstacles

A crouching body lowers the rover’s highest point, while a folding wheel can move out of the way of a narrow passage. This helps with overhangs and gaps, but it does not guarantee that the chassis, electronics or suspension will clear a rock. Designers still need to check approach angle, break-over angle and the possibility of the body hanging up between wheels.

3. Wheel-width adaptation

A variable-width wheel can trade clearance for support. Narrowing helps between obstacles; widening can provide a broader contact geometry on a loose surface. Every change also alters the contact patch, steering effort, overturning tendency and the amount of soil displaced. The useful setting depends on terrain and vehicle load rather than being universally “wide” or “narrow.”

4. Compliance and impact absorption

Flexible structures can deform when a wheel strikes a small obstacle, reducing a sharp impact. That compliance is valuable on rocks and broken ground, but too much deformation can waste drive energy, reduce steering precision or let the body contact the surface. A lunar design would have to balance flexibility with predictable load paths and a fail-safe locked state.

5. Traction versus soil disturbance

On loose grains, a wheel must push against soil without simply digging a hole. Treads, wheel shape, contact pressure and driving torque all influence whether the wheel compacts material, shears it or ejects it. A design that climbs well on a firm incline may spin or excavate itself in fluffy regolith.

Why lunar soil is harder than an Earth sand test

Regolith is not a single material

Lunar routes can combine compacted soil, very fluffy deposits, rocks, slopes and sharp-edged debris. NASA’s 2026 Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge describes these terrain-dependent demands and emphasizes that vehicle needs differ in speed, load capacity, durability and terrain performance. A wheel optimized for a narrow sandy channel may be poorly suited to a rocky traverse.

Partial gravity changes wheel–soil interaction

A NASA TechPort study of wheel–regolith interactions under lunar gravity notes that terrestrial tests based only on scaled-down force can overestimate mobility. Granular material does not respond solely to the normal load; gravity affects how grains settle, shear and support a wheel. Earth sandbox results are therefore useful analogs, but they cannot by themselves prove lunar performance.

Vacuum, temperature and dust add qualification burdens

A lunar wheel must operate without atmosphere, through extreme temperature cycles and in abrasive dust. The available NASA challenge description treats lunar-like dust, vacuum, extreme temperatures, longer distances and different sizes and loads as potential follow-on tests for prototypes. It does not say those tests have already been completed for the origami concepts discussed here.

How the concepts compare with VIPER’s soft-soil strategy

Approach Primary adaptation Published evidence What it does not establish
PUFFER Folding PCB chassis, crouching body and wheels that fold over the body; two-wheel skittering locomotion NASA/JPL Earth-based scout demonstrations; about 625 m on one charge over a level dirt path, with range varying by instrument use It is not a full-size lunar rover, and the range figure is not a lunar mobility rating
OriWheelBot Miura-origami wheels vary width for obstacle clearance and sand walking 2023 paper reports 40% width change, 66.7% load-carrying ratio on flat sand and a 17-degree sand incline Sand experiments do not demonstrate operation in lunar regolith, vacuum or partial gravity
VIPER Independent wheel lifting and sweeping, active suspension and independent steering NASA states a capability of up to a 15-degree incline and describes swimming-like motion in very fluffy soil VIPER is a separate, non-origami mobility architecture; its figures should not be compared directly with OriWheelBot’s sand result
Rock and Roll with NASA prototypes Different wheel concepts tested on a 45-kilogram MicroChariot test rover NASA reported five finalist designs tested on courses at Johnson’s Rock Yard in 2026 The report describes ground prototypes and possible future lunar-like testing, not lunar operation or certification

VIPER illustrates a different answer to soft soil. Its wheels can be lifted independently and used to dig into and sweep along very fluffy material, creating a swimming-like motion. Active suspension keeps the wheel modules in contact, while independent steering helps place each wheel. Those functions address soft-soil mobility without changing a wheel’s width through origami folding.

What the available tests actually show

  • OriWheelBot: measurable shape change and sand-walking performance, including a 40% width change and a 17-degree sand incline in the authors’ 2023 experiments.
  • PUFFER: a compact scout that can fold, crouch, skitter and crawl into tight spaces; the reported 625-metre distance is on a level dirt path and depends on instrument use.
  • VIPER: a lunar-rover mobility concept rated by NASA for up to a 15-degree incline, with wheel lifting and sweeping for very fluffy soil.
  • NASA wheel challenge: five finalist wheel designs on a 45-kilogram test rover, evaluated at Johnson’s Rock Yard in 2026.

These results come from different machines, loads, surfaces and purposes. A 17-degree sand incline for a small research robot is not interchangeable with VIPER’s stated 15-degree capability, and neither is a certification for an origami wheel on the Moon.

What a lunar-ready origami wheel would still need to prove

  1. Repeatable deployment: Demonstrate that folds, hinges and flexible members deploy after launch and remain operable after dust exposure.
  2. Load and fatigue margins: Test the wheel under the intended rover mass, wheel torque, braking loads and thousands of obstacle encounters rather than only a single demonstration.
  3. Terrain-specific traction: Measure slip, sinkage, soil disturbance and overturning risk on compacted soil, fluffy regolith, slopes and rock fields.
  4. Partial-gravity validation: Use lunar-gravity-relevant experiments or validated models that capture granular behavior, not just an Earth test with reduced downforce.
  5. Environmental qualification: Expose hardware to vacuum, lunar dust, thermal extremes and the mission’s expected temperature cycles.
  6. Fail-safe behavior: Show that a jammed fold, torn flexible circuit or blocked wheel leaves the rover controllable, or provide a safe locked configuration.
  7. Mission-level endurance: Verify energy use, speed, communication delays, navigation and distance over the planned traverse, including recovery from wheel slip.

NASA’s wheel-prototype challenge is useful because it treats wheel design as a set of alternatives for different vehicles and terrains. As robotics engineer Ed Herrera put it, “The more wheel technologies we can develop and understand, the more options we have to meet the needs of different vehicles, terrains, and missions on the Moon and Mars.”

So, can origami rover wheels work in lunar soil?

They could be promising engineering candidates, especially where compact packaging, low clearance, variable width or compliant contact is valuable. The OriWheelBot results show that an origami wheel can change geometry and move on sand; PUFFER shows that folding structures can make a small scout compact and maneuverable. But the evidence does not show one origami-inspired lunar wheel that has flown, operated on the Moon or been certified for lunar use.

For an actual mission, the correct question is not whether “origami” works in general. It is whether a particular folding geometry, material, actuator, tread and control system delivers adequate traction, stability, durability and fault tolerance for the mission’s regolith, slope, payload and temperature environment.

Bottom line

Origami-inspired rover wheels work by turning folding geometry into a mobility function: PUFFER folds for transport, crouching and tight-space crawling, while OriWheelBot changes wheel width and studies sand locomotion. Those are credible terrestrial demonstrations of useful mechanisms, not proof of lunar qualification. Lunar soil, partial gravity, vacuum, dust and mixed rock terrain require dedicated testing, and NASA’s VIPER and wheel-prototype programs show that other adaptive strategies may be better for particular routes.
