How to Monitor Seawater Chemistry During an Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement Project

Monitor an ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) project with a site-specific baseline, separate effluent checks from receiving-water observations, and a paired system of calibrated autonomous sensors and laboratory bottle samples. Measure temperature and salinity with at least two carbonate-system variables—pH, total alkalinity (TA), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), or carbon-dioxide partial pressure (pCO2 or fCO2)—then add oxygen, turbidity, suspended solids, nutrients and ecological indicators required by the project design, permit and environmental-risk assessment.

There is no scientifically defensible universal station spacing, sampling frequency or action threshold for every OAE site. Your monitoring plan must resolve the site’s natural variability, the discharge or addition method, plume mixing, water-column depth and the measurements needed for the project’s monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) method.

What the monitoring must demonstrate

An OAE monitoring program has to answer three different questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What was normal before intervention? A sufficiently long and well-resolved baseline establishes the site’s background chemistry and its natural swings.
  • What entered the ocean? Effluent or added material must be characterized before discharge so the dose and permitted conditions can be checked.
  • What changed in the receiving water? Measurements around the mixing zone and at reference locations must distinguish an alkalinity signal from tides, weather, circulation, biology and other sources of variation.

Write the monitoring plan before deployment. It should identify every station, its latitude and longitude, water-column position and depth, deployment method, sampling timing, analytical method, calibration procedure, quality-control checks, data format and responsible operator. Record the protocol version that governs the project; requirements in Isometric’s coastal-outfall v1.0.2 and v1.1 documents are not identical.

Build a baseline that can reveal natural variability

Natural seawater chemistry changes on multiple time scales. Tides can move a station through different water masses; storms and river flow alter salinity and suspended material; photosynthesis and respiration change dissolved carbon; and seasonal circulation can shift temperature, nutrients and pH. A short pre-project snapshot can therefore mistake ordinary variability for an OAE effect.

Define baseline locations

Use locations that represent the planned discharge area, the expected plume pathway, and unaffected reference water. Include the water-column positions at which the addition and its effects are expected: surface, near-bottom, intake or outfall depth, and any density-stratified layers relevant to the site. Document whether a measurement is inside the mixing zone, at its edge, downstream, upstream or at a reference station.

Choose a useful time window and resolution

The baseline period and sampling interval should capture the variability that matters to your intervention: tidal cycles, day-night biology, weather events, seasonal changes and operational pauses. Neither Isometric’s surfaced material nor the other sources establish one duration or frequency that applies to every project. Set those values from local observations, expected plume residence time, risk assessment and the MRV method, and explain the reasoning in the plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep reference observations running

Continue measurements at reference locations during operations. A contemporaneous reference helps separate a project signal from a regional event that affects treated and untreated water alike. Use the same instruments, depths, sample handling and laboratory methods for baseline, intervention and reference observations whenever practical.

Which seawater parameters should I measure?

The carbonate system can be constrained by measuring two independent variables from pH, pCO2 (or fCO2), TA and DIC, with temperature and salinity as essential supporting observations. Calculations may also require pressure and nutrients such as phosphate and silicate. Select variables that fit the addition chemistry, expected signal, instrument capability, laboratory capacity and MRV model.

Parameter What it contributes Typical observation approach
pH Responds to changes in carbonate equilibria and is useful for resolving an alkalinity-related plume when measured with temperature, salinity and pressure. Calibrated in-situ sensor for time series, with discrete samples for validation.
Total alkalinity (TA) Represents seawater’s acid-neutralizing capacity and is central to quantifying an alkalinity addition. Discrete laboratory analysis is common; verify whether a suitable, quality-controlled autonomous instrument is available for the project.
Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) Measures the pool of non-biological carbon in seawater; NOAA describes DIC as telling us “how much non-biological carbon is in seawater.” Discrete bottle samples analyzed under a recognized method, with preservation and holding times documented.
pCO2 or fCO2 Shows the dissolved carbon-dioxide pressure or fugacity and helps constrain the carbonate system with another independent variable. Autonomous equilibrator or discrete laboratory measurement, depending on deployment and validation needs.
Temperature and salinity Provide physical context, support carbonate calculations and help identify water-mass changes and dilution. Co-located, calibrated conductivity-temperature sensors or bottle measurements checked against them.

Measure at least two carbonate variables in receiving water. If TA is calculated from two other carbonate observations, follow the applicable protocol’s recommendation to collect routine bottle samples so the calculation can be checked against measured alkalinity. Do not assume that adding more variables automatically improves an MRV result; each additional method brings calibration, logistics and uncertainty that must be controlled.

Separate effluent monitoring from receiving-water monitoring

Effluent before discharge

For a coastal-outfall project, the surfaced Isometric Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement from Coastal Outfalls v1.1 guidance states: “Project must monitor effluent characteristics prior to ocean discharge through ongoing measurement of pH, alkalinity, temperature and salinity of the effluent.” These observations characterize the physical effluent and check whether dosing remains within permitted conditions. Place the measurement point where the effluent is representative of what will enter the ocean, and retain timestamps that can be matched to operating rate, dose and discharge records.

Receiving water and the mixing zone

Deploy an array that can resolve the plume’s horizontal spread, vertical structure and dilution. Include stations at the mixing-zone edge and at suitable downstream and reference locations. The surfaced Isometric v1.0.2 text lists temperature, salinity, two carbonate-chemistry parameters, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and total suspended solids at the mixing-zone edge; it recommends a third carbonate parameter, chlorophyll-a and dissolved nutrients. Treat those details as versioned requirements or recommendations, not as a universal rule: confirm the protocol and project documents that apply to your credited activity.

Site risk and the discharge permit may require additional observations, such as trace metals, particle size, nutrients, plankton, benthic effects or other ecological measurements. Add them when the material, dose, local sensitivity or permit calls for them.

Use sensors and discrete samples together

Autonomous instruments provide the temporal coverage needed to see tides, storms, plume pulses and short-lived excursions. Bottle samples provide laboratory-quality measurements, independent checks on sensor drift and variables for which field sensors are unavailable or unsuitable. A defensible program uses both streams and explicitly links them by time, position and depth.

Autonomous measurements

  • Choose instruments rated for the deployment depth, temperature, salinity, fouling conditions and expected concentration range.
  • Calibrate before deployment with traceable standards, record the standard identity and expiry, and repeat post-deployment checks to quantify drift.
  • Log raw readings as well as processed values, instrument serial numbers, firmware, configuration, clock setting and maintenance events.
  • Use anti-fouling and cleaning procedures appropriate to the site, and document any period when a sensor was out of water or malfunctioning.

The surfaced v1.1 material notes that ready-to-deploy alkalinity sensors were not available at the time of that protocol. Check current instrument status during procurement rather than assuming that an autonomous TA sensor can replace bottle analysis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Discrete bottle samples

Collect water with a Niskin bottle or another sampler suitable for the required depth, material compatibility and volume. ISO 5667-26:2022 covers discrete seawater collection for the four measurable inorganic-carbon parameters. Follow the standard and the laboratory’s method for rinsing, filling, avoiding bubbles, preservation, storage, holding time and chain of custody.

Schedule bottle samples to overlap sensor observations. Analyze TA, DIC, pH or pCO2 using recognized procedures, and use paired results to identify bias, drift, fouling or calculation errors. The NOAA OCADS Handbook of Methods for the Analysis of Carbon Dioxide Parameters in Sea Water is a reference for sampling, analytical standard operating procedures and quality assurance.

A practical monitoring workflow

  1. Describe the intervention. Record the alkalinity material, preparation, concentration, addition rate, discharge geometry, operating schedule and expected mixing behavior. Identify the permit, environmental-risk plan and MRV method that govern the work.
  2. Map the site. Select treatment, plume, mixing-zone-edge and reference stations. Specify coordinates, depths, water-column strata, access method and expected tidal or circulation conditions.
  3. Establish the baseline. Operate the planned sensors and collect bottle samples for a period and at a resolution that capture relevant local variability. Include the same physical and carbonate variables intended for the intervention period.
  4. Instrument the effluent. For a coastal outfall under the surfaced v1.1 guidance, measure effluent pH, TA, temperature and salinity on an ongoing basis before discharge. Synchronize these data with dosing and operations logs.
  5. Select carbonate observations. In receiving water, choose at least two of pH, TA, DIC and pCO2. Select the pair that best constrains the expected signal and can be measured with documented precision.
  6. Deploy physical and ecological indicators. Co-measure temperature and salinity. Assess dissolved oxygen, turbidity, total suspended solids, chlorophyll-a, nutrients, trace metals and ecological endpoints against the current protocol, permit and site risk assessment.
  7. Plan validation samples. Use discrete bottles to validate sensor readings and calculated variables. Where the applicable protocol calls for burst sampling of autonomous-sensor parameters in the mixing zone, define the burst design in the project plan rather than borrowing a frequency from another site.
  8. Run quality control in the field. Include calibration checks, blanks or duplicates where appropriate, clock synchronization, deployment and recovery logs, fouling inspections, and notes on weather, sea state and operational interruptions.
  9. Process and review data. Flag sensor drift, implausible salinity or temperature, pressure mismatches, bubbles, fouling and samples outside holding time. Compare paired sensor and laboratory results before accepting derived carbonate values.
  10. Archive and report. Preserve raw and corrected data, calibration files, laboratory reports, uncertainty estimates, quality flags, station metadata, methods, sample custody records and an explanation of missing or rejected observations.

Compare monitoring approaches before choosing one

Decision axis Autonomous sensor time series Discrete laboratory samples Combined design
Temporal coverage High; captures short events and tidal structure. Lower; each observation represents a sampling visit. Continuous context with scheduled independent checks.
Carbonate variables Strong for variables with validated field instruments; availability differs by parameter. Can measure pH, TA, DIC and pCO2 under laboratory methods. Uses sensors for coverage and bottles for variables or checks that sensors cannot provide.
Calibration and precision Vulnerable to drift, fouling, pressure effects and biofouling between visits. Depends on laboratory method, standards, preservation and transport. Paired samples reveal drift and support a defensible uncertainty estimate.
Spatial and depth resolution Usually fixed at deployment points; multiple packages increase cost and recovery work. Flexible depths and locations during a cruise or boat visit. Fixed time series plus targeted plume transects and depth profiles.
Logistics Requires power, telemetry or recovery, moorings, cleaning and maintenance. Requires vessel time, sampler, bottles, preservation, shipping and laboratory capacity. More coordination, but avoids relying on a single failure-prone data stream.
Best fit Detecting variability and transient plume behavior. Traceable chemistry and validation. MRV programs that must demonstrate both coverage and measurement credibility.

Quality assurance, uncertainty and metadata

Data quality is part of the measurement, not an administrative afterthought. Adopt recognized standard operating procedures and define acceptance criteria before operations begin. The NOAA OCADS handbook provides methods and quality-assurance context; the Carbon to Sea Initiative’s OAE Data Management Protocol v1.0.0, first published in August 2025 in collaboration with NOAA and researchers, provides recommendations for organizing data and metadata.

Minimum records for each observation

  • Unique observation and sample identifiers, station coordinates, depth or pressure, date and time in UTC, and the time standard used by instruments.
  • Parameter name, unit, instrument or laboratory method, instrument serial number, calibration standards, calibration date and operator.
  • Collection device, bottle and preservation details, filtration if used, holding time, laboratory receipt and analysis dates.
  • Raw value, processed value, uncertainty or precision estimate, quality flag, detection or reporting limit where relevant, and reason for any correction or rejection.
  • Temperature, salinity and pressure associated with carbonate observations, plus nutrient values used in calculations.
  • Deployment, recovery, cleaning, maintenance, fouling, weather, discharge rate and operational status notes.

Keep versioned processing code or calculation sheets with the data. A reviewer should be able to reproduce a reported carbonate value from the raw observation, calibration information, supporting variables and documented equations.

How to tell an OAE signal from natural variability

Interpretation depends on design as much as on chemistry. Compare intervention observations with the pre-intervention baseline and contemporaneous reference stations, align measurements by tide and depth where possible, and use the physical plume indicators—salinity, temperature, turbidity and tracers—to determine whether a sample actually encountered the discharge. A pH change without a corresponding alkalinity, DIC or physical-plume pattern is not, by itself, proof of an OAE effect.

Use repeated paired observations to estimate the site’s background distribution and the combined uncertainty of sampling, analysis, calibration and carbonate-system calculations. State which changes are detectable with the deployed design and which remain below its resolution. Do not import a sampling frequency, detection limit or threshold from an unrelated project.

Documented example: NOAA LOC-01

NOAA’s catalog describes LOC-01, a ship-based tracer study on the Northeast U.S. Shelf in September 2023. The inventory includes DIC, TA, sensor pH, pCO2, rhodamine, nutrients and other variables. Its stated purpose was to develop an in-water MRV framework linking an OAE intervention and resulting carbon removal to dynamic baseline ocean conditions.

LOC-01 demonstrates the value of combining carbonate chemistry, a physical tracer and environmental context, but it is a documented study rather than a universal sampling template. A coastal outfall, an offshore vessel operation and a nearshore sediment-based addition will require different station geometry, depths, timing and permits.

Common failure modes and corrections

Baseline is too short

Symptom: A seasonal, tidal or storm-driven change is labeled an intervention effect. Correction: Extend baseline observations and retain reference stations through operations; redesign the analysis around the variability actually observed.

Only pH is measured

Symptom: The project cannot distinguish carbonate chemistry from temperature, salinity or biological effects. Correction: Add a second independent carbonate variable and the physical observations needed for calculation and interpretation.

Effluent and receiving water are conflated

Symptom: An in-pipe measurement is treated as evidence of the plume’s environmental concentration. Correction: Maintain separate effluent checks and receiving-water stations, with synchronized operational and oceanographic records.

Sensor data are accepted without bottle checks

Symptom: Drift or fouling creates a plausible-looking time series. Correction: Schedule overlapping laboratory samples, pre- and post-deployment calibration checks, and explicit quality flags.

Protocol versions are mixed

Symptom: A requirement from Isometric v1.0.2 is reported as a current v1.1 obligation, or vice versa. Correction: Name the protocol and version in the monitoring plan, verify the latest project documents and apply only the requirements relevant to the credited activity.

Metadata are incomplete

Symptom: Results cannot be compared across stations or reproduced by a reviewer. Correction: Preserve calibration, method, depth, timing, units, uncertainty, quality flags and sample-custody information with every dataset.
