A player’s return depends on the specific injury and its severity, treatment, recovery, symptoms, and medical clearance. A team’s estimate is a case-specific forecast—not a confirmed return date.
Why NHL injury timelines differ
An injury label alone cannot establish how long a player will be out. The affected structure, severity, treatment, and the player’s progress all matter. When a report provides a specific diagnosis, use that rather than assuming that similar-sounding injuries have the same recovery schedule.

- Diagnosis and severity: A torn ligament, a contusion, and a concussion are different conditions; even injuries to the same structure can vary in severity.
- Treatment and healing: Surgery or other treatment can shape an estimate, but one player’s recovery period should not be projected onto another player.
- Symptoms and activity: For concussion in particular, symptoms can appear later or emerge during exertion, so feeling better at rest is not by itself proof of readiness.
- Medical clearance: A projected date or practice appearance is not equivalent to clearance for game action.
Two NHL.com reports illustrate why individual estimates should not be treated as a league-wide rule. In 2026, the site described Tyler Seguin’s torn ACL and surgery with a typical recovery timeline of nine months, and later reported his return in a preseason game. A separate 2026 report said Auston Matthews had a grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion, underwent season-ending surgery, and was expected to recover in 12 weeks. These are estimates for different injuries and treatment contexts, not directly comparable measurements or population averages. (NHL.com on Seguin; NHL.com on Matthews)

What does “week to week” mean?
“Week to week” is a team’s status description, not a precise medical interval. The NHL/NHLPA materials cited here do not define it as a fixed number of weeks or a guaranteed return window. Treat it as an indication that the player’s availability is being assessed over time, and look for subsequent team updates rather than converting the phrase into a calendar date.

How concussion return-to-play works in the NHL
The 2023-24 NHL/NHLPA Concussion Evaluation and Management Protocol, dated June 1, 2023, sets out a distinct process. When concussion is suspected, the player is evaluated; symptoms may not appear immediately and can develop 24–48 hours or longer after a blow. A player diagnosed with concussion after acute evaluation may not return to play or practice on the same day, even if symptoms resolve. (NHL/NHLPA Concussion Evaluation and Management Protocol)
Rest and a graded activity progression
The protocol recommends a brief initial period of physical and cognitive rest, giving 24–48 hours as an example. It then describes a gradual progression, increasing activity only when it does not substantially worsen symptoms or provoke significant new ones:

- Symptom-limited daily activity.

- Greater exercise intensity and duration.
- Non-contact skating.
- Non-contact drills.
- Controlled body contact.
The protocol says each step generally takes 24 hours, but expressly notes that timing can vary with factors such as player age and history and that management must be individualized. The stages are not a countdown that can be multiplied into a promised total recovery time.
Assessment and the clearance decision
Before live game play, the protocol requires a post-injury assessment by a consulting neuropsychologist after the player has been determined to be symptom-free at rest and on exertion. Unrestricted play requires complete recovery of concussion symptoms at rest, no symptoms at competitive exertion after completing the graded progression, and a return to neurological and neurocognitive baseline as judged by the club physician following neuropsychological evaluation. The club physician is responsible for the return decision.

An NHL.com explainer quoting the concussion protocol notes that there is no mandatory period a player must sit out after a concussion; the decision depends on that player’s circumstances. That does not mean a player can return as soon as they wish: the protocol’s evaluation, progression, and clearance criteria still apply. (NHL.com concussion protocol explainer)
How to read an injury update
Injury reports describe different points in a recovery, not interchangeable proof of readiness. When following a specific player, distinguish an estimate from an observed milestone:

- NHL STREET HOCKEY OFFICAL: This youth set is officially licensed by the National Hockey League, only for use with official 2 5/8" street hockey ball
- “Expected” or “typical” recovery: A forecast tied to the reported injury and circumstances.
- Skating: Evidence of an activity milestone, not confirmation of unrestricted practice or game clearance.
- Practice: The player may be participating in some form, but a practice appearance alone does not establish readiness for live game play.
- Returned to a game: A completed return to competition, distinct from an earlier estimate or practice report.
For a useful comparison between two players, check the diagnosis and severity, reported treatment, the wording and date of the estimate, any stated recovery progress, and whether the player was actually cleared or returned to a game. Unless a report establishes a common measurement method, the estimates should not be treated as directly comparable.
What public timelines cannot tell you
Public updates may not disclose every medical detail, and the cited NHL and NHL/NHLPA sources do not establish a universal timetable or league-wide average for injuries. Estimates can change as recovery progresses. Nor do these sources support using pain tolerance, a player’s wish to return, or an appearance at practice as proof of medical readiness. The NHL/NHLPA protocol describes club procedures for NHL players; it is not a personal treatment plan for readers.
