You generally don’t run the retired Internet Explorer desktop app as a new kiosk browser. Instead, configure Microsoft Edge in kiosk mode and use IE mode only for the legacy website that needs it. Edge offers a full-screen single-site experience and a limited multi-tab public-browsing experience; Windows Assigned Access is the settings-based way to set up a kiosk account and choose between them.
What “Internet Explorer kiosk mode” means now
Internet Explorer 11 desktop support ended on June 15, 2022 for certain Windows 10 and Windows 10 IoT Semi-Annual Channels—not every Windows edition or channel. Microsoft recommends moving to Edge. Its stated support horizon for IE mode in Edge is through at least 2029; Microsoft said it would give one year’s notice before retiring IE mode. Check Microsoft’s lifecycle notice for current status and the Windows versions it covers.

IE mode is a compatibility feature inside Edge, not a separate kiosk type and not a setting that turns every Edge tab into Internet Explorer. Edge uses the IE11 MSHTML engine for selected legacy sites and Chromium for modern sites. The site must be included in an Enterprise Mode Site List or covered by the applicable intranet-site policy. Microsoft describes IE mode as a way for organizations to retain backward compatibility with existing websites while using a modern browser; see its IE mode documentation.

Pick the experience based on whether visitors should see one fixed destination or browse a limited set of pages. The destination can use IE mode if it is configured as a legacy site.

Both Edge kiosk experiences run in InPrivate mode, and autofill is disabled. Idle reset and download-deletion behavior depend on Edge version and policy requirements. Confirm the applicable settings in Microsoft’s Edge kiosk mode guidance for the target Windows and Edge releases.
Set up a kiosk with Windows Assigned Access
For one or a small number of devices, Windows Settings provides the documented, settings-based route. Assigned Access is a Windows feature for configuring a device as a kiosk or with a restricted user experience. The exact labels and availability can vary by Windows edition and release; consult Microsoft’s Assigned Access documentation for the device you are configuring.

- Open Windows Settings and go to Accounts > Other users (the label may differ by Windows version). Find the kiosk or Assigned Access setup option and choose Get started or its current equivalent.
- Create or select the kiosk account, then choose Microsoft Edge as the kiosk app.
- Select Digital/Interactive Signage for a single full-screen destination, or Public Browsing for limited multi-tab browsing.
- Enter the start URL. If the site requires IE compatibility, first arrange for it to be recognized as an IE-mode site through the Enterprise Mode Site List or applicable policy.
- Set the inactivity time and other available session options, then save the configuration. Test the session as the kiosk account.
A single-app kiosk can be configured to restart its app if it closes. For managed fleets, use the applicable Assigned Access and Edge policies rather than assuming that a browser launch option alone locks down the device.
Launch Edge kiosk mode from the command line
For a quick launch or a controlled shortcut, Microsoft documents these Edge kiosk command forms. Replace the example URL with the destination you want to open:

These commands start an Edge kiosk experience; they do not by themselves provision a full Windows device lockdown or kiosk account. Use Assigned Access or the appropriate device-management configuration when the device must be restricted to the kiosk experience.

Configure IE mode separately from the kiosk experience. Add the legacy site to an Enterprise Mode Site List or apply the relevant intranet-site policy, then ensure the site is recognized by Edge. The precise policy path depends on how the device is managed; Microsoft’s IE mode policy reference documents the available controls.

IE mode supports some legacy components, including ActiveX, but it does not carry over every Internet Explorer feature. Review Microsoft’s compatibility details and requirements before relying on a feature in a public-facing kiosk. Keep Windows and Edge updated, and verify that the target Windows edition, Edge release, and IE mode prerequisites are supported.
Test the complete kiosk session
Before putting a device in service, test it using the kiosk account on the actual Windows build and Edge release. Verify that the start page loads, the legacy site opens in IE mode when required, and visitors can use only the browsing controls intended for that experience. Also check the idle reset, download handling, and what happens if Edge closes. Those results can depend on version and policy, so validate the configured behavior rather than assuming a command or default covers it.
