Most Dell Inspiron laptops run Windows, so the screenshot method depends on whether you want a quick capture, a saved file, or a cropped snip. The good news: you’ve got several reliable options, and most work across Windows 10 and Windows 11.
This guide covers every common way to take a screenshot on a Dell Inspiron—keyboard shortcuts, Snipping Tool, and the Game Bar—plus where the screenshots land and what to do when a shortcut doesn’t work.

What You Need Before You Start
You don’t need any extra software for basic screenshots on a Dell Inspiron. However, it helps to know your Windows version (Windows 10 vs Windows 11) and what you want to capture (full screen, a window, or a selected area).

- Keyboard labels: Look for keys labeled PrtSc, PrtScn, or Print Screen. On some Inspirons, you may need the Fn key too.
- Where you’ll paste/edit: If you use clipboard-based methods, you’ll paste into Paint, Word, Outlook, or similar apps.
Fastest Keyboard Shortcuts (Most Common on Dell Inspiron)
These are the quickest options when you just need a screenshot immediately. Try them first—they’re the most consistent across Windows 10 and Windows 11.
#1 Best Overall
- 2-Year warranty.
- Designed for DIY installation with included tools.
- IPS Wide View Matte finish reduces glare and improves viewing angles.
- Works for 1920x1080 FHD resolution, 144Hz refresh rate. 40-pin connector. For Non-Touch laptops.
- Please, make sure your original screen has the same specifications before purchasing.
Capture the Entire Screen (Print Screen)
Press PrtSc (sometimes labeled PrtScn or Print Screen).
This captures everything on your display and copies it to the clipboard. You still need to paste to see/save it.
- Open Paint (Start menu > type Paint).
- Press Ctrl + V to paste.
- Save via File > Save as (PNG is usually the cleanest).
Capture the Active Window (Alt + Print Screen)
If you want only one app window (instead of your whole desktop), press Alt + PrtSc.
Windows copies the active window to the clipboard. Paste it into Paint or your document editor using Ctrl + V.
Save a Screenshot to a File Automatically (Windows + PrtScn)
To take a screenshot and save it automatically as a file, press Windows + PrtSc.
Windows usually dims the screen briefly, then stores the image as a .PNG file. This is the fastest “no extra steps” method.
Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch (Windows 10/11)
If you need a cropped image (a specific rectangle, freeform shape, or window), the built-in snipping tools are your best bet.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use Snipping Tool (Best for cropped shots)
Snipping Tool is built into modern Windows versions (Windows 11 and Windows 10 updates). Use it to select exactly what you want.
- Press Windows key and type Snipping Tool.
- Open it.
- Click New.
- Choose a mode:
- Rectangular snip (drag a rectangle)
- Free-form snip (draw around the area)
- Window snip (click a window)
- Full-screen snip
- Drag/select the area, then review the preview.
- Click Save (or the Save icon) and pick a folder.
Use Snip & Sketch (Windows 10 workflows)
On some Dell Inspiron setups (especially Windows 10), Snip & Sketch is the quickest snipping experience.
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- At the top of the screen, choose a snip type: Rectangular, Freeform, Window, or Full-screen.
- Select the area.
- The snip copies to the clipboard and typically shows a toast notification. Click the notification to open it in Snip & Sketch.
- Use Save As to store it as PNG/JPG.
Capture a Screenshot of a Selected Area on Any Windows Version
If you just want a cropped selection and your Snipping Tool feels slower, use Windows + Shift + S. It works on many Inspiron systems across Windows 10/11.
Choose the snip mode you need, select the area, and then save from the preview (or paste into Paint if no preview opens).

Screenshot for Games (Xbox Game Bar)
If you’re trying to screenshot gameplay (full-screen games and many apps), the Xbox Game Bar method is often the most reliable.
- Press Windows + G to open the Xbox Game Bar.
- Look for the Capture panel.
- Select Take a screenshot (camera icon) or use the shortcut shown there.
- Check your screenshot folder (commonly under Captures in your Videos area).
If Windows + G doesn’t open Game Bar, ensure Game Bar is enabled in Windows settings and that the app/game supports it.
Where Screenshots Are Saved (And What to Check)
Where your screenshot ends up depends on which shortcut you used. File-saving shortcuts create files; clipboard shortcuts require pasting.
Windows 11/10 default folders
When you use Windows + PrtSc, screenshots are typically saved here:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Pictures > Screenshots
If you’re not seeing your file, search Windows for the newest .PNG (or .JPG) screenshot by using the Start menu search and typing screenshots.
When OneDrive changes the destination
If you use OneDrive and your Pictures folder is syncing, screenshots may land in a OneDrive-synced location (and appear on other devices signed into the same Microsoft account).
Check:
- Start menu > type OneDrive
- OneDrive settings for syncing Pictures
Troubleshooting When Screenshots Fail
Even on Dell Inspiron laptops, screenshots can fail due to keyboard mapping, keyboard hotkeys (Fn), disabled capture features, or missing paste target apps. Use the checks below in order.
Print Screen doesn’t do anything
Common fix: you may be copying to clipboard but not pasting anywhere. Try this workflow:
Recommended Free Tools
- Press PrtSc.
- Open Paint.
- Press Ctrl + V.
If nothing appears, try Alt + PrtSc while an app window is active.
Files aren’t saving (Win + PrtSc)
If Windows + PrtSc isn’t producing new files:
- Confirm you used Windows + PrtSc (not just PrtSc).
- Go to Pictures > Screenshots and check the timestamp.
- Wait 5–10 seconds and refresh the folder (some systems take a moment to write files).
- Restart the laptop and try again.
If you see the dimming effect but no file, your storage path may be redirected—check OneDrive syncing status.
Keyboard uses Fn or different key labels
On some Dell Inspiron keyboards, the Print Screen key shares a function layer. If PrtSc doesn’t work:

- Try Fn + Windows + PrtSc.
You can also use Snipping Tool as a fallback—mouse-driven capture bypasses the keyboard Print Screen key entirely.
Screenshot button works, but you can’t find the image
When using clipboard methods (PrtSc or Alt + PrtSc), there’s no file created automatically. You must paste and then save.
Also check Windows search for recent images:
- Open Start menu search
- Type PNG and filter by Today (or use “Date modified”)
Graphics drivers or full-screen apps behave oddly
Some full-screen apps (certain games, DRM-protected content, video players) may block screenshots or produce black/blank images.
- Try Alt + PrtSc to capture only the active window.
- Try Snipping Tool for a cropped capture of what’s visible.
- For games, prefer Windows + G and Game Bar screenshot.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to paste: PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc copy to clipboard only.
- Searching the wrong folder: Only Windows + PrtSc reliably creates files in Pictures > Screenshots.
- Capturing the wrong window: With Alt + PrtSc, the “active” window matters—click the window first.
- Missing Fn layer: If Print Screen doesn’t respond, try Fn combos.
Quick Comparison: Which Method Should You Use?
Pick the method based on what you need to capture and how quickly you want the file.
| Goal | Best Method | Where It Ends Up |
|---|---|---|
| Full desktop screenshot fast | Windows + PrtSc | Pictures > Screenshots as PNG |
| Full desktop to paste into a doc | PrtSc | Clipboard (paste with Ctrl + V) |
| Only one app window | Alt + PrtSc | Clipboard (paste, then save) |
| Cropped area (rectangle/freeform) | Snipping Tool or Windows + Shift + S | Preview/to clipboard, then save |
| Game screenshots | Windows + G > Take a screenshot | Captures folder (varies by setup) |
FAQs
How do I take a screenshot on a Dell Inspiron without using PrtSc?
Use Windows + Shift + S for an area snip, or open Snipping Tool and click New to choose a snip type.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does my screenshot show up blank or black?
Some full-screen apps block capture. Try Alt + PrtSc, use Snipping Tool, or for games use Windows + G with Game Bar.
Can I take screenshots with Dell laptop hotkeys?
Yes, but the exact hotkey depends on your keyboard layout. If Print Screen is on a function layer, try Fn + PrtSc. Otherwise, stick to Windows + PrtSc and snipping tools.
Does Windows automatically save screenshots when I use Snipping Tool?
Snipping Tool usually shows a preview that you can save manually. Clipboard-based snips (from Windows + Shift + S) often need you to paste into an app or open the preview to save.
What file format do screenshots use?
Most Windows screenshot captures save as PNG, especially when using Windows + PrtSc. Cropped snips saved from Snipping Tool are typically PNG as well unless you choose a different format when saving.
Bottom Line
If you want the easiest win, press Windows + PrtSc—Windows saves the screenshot automatically to Pictures > Screenshots. If you need a specific cropped area, use Snipping Tool or Windows + Shift + S.
When something doesn’t work, focus on the two most common causes: you copied to clipboard (so you must paste), or your Print Screen key needs an Fn modifier.
