Open the payment in your Venmo transactions feed and read its status. A Completed payment has been sent, which means the money has left your account for the recipient. A Pending payment has not yet reached them. The usual reasons are a bank-funded transfer that is still processing, or a recipient who has not yet verified the phone number or email address you used or finished setting up a Venmo account. Venmo’s Payments & Requests FAQ describes the general case as delivery to the recipient’s Venmo account right away in most instances, with stated exceptions for processing and recipient setup.
Check the payment status in the app
The transaction detail is the most reliable place to confirm delivery. A notification can be missed or delayed, so use it as a prompt to look at the record itself.

- Open the Venmo app and tap the Me tab.
- Find the payment in your transactions feed and tap it.
- Read the status and the destination shown in the detail view. Venmo describes this view as the place to see a payment’s status or where it went, as set out in its Payments & Requests FAQ.
- Confirm that the displayed recipient is the person you meant to pay. A payment sent to the wrong username, phone number, or email will show that contact, not the person you intended.
What Completed and Pending mean
Venmo states that when a payment shows as Completed, the money has been sent. Pending means more time may be needed, or the recipient may need to finish setting up their account before the money can be delivered. Venmo’s help article on personal payments that show as Pending covers the two common causes below. They call for different responses, so identify which one applies before you act.
Pending because a bank transfer is still processing
Some bank-funded payments take longer to complete. Venmo’s pending-payment article says that certain bank-funded pending payments “typically take 3-5 business days to complete.” That range applies to those bank-funded transactions only, not to every Venmo payment. For these payments, the transaction feed shows an estimated completion date. When the payment completes, the money reaches the recipient’s Venmo account, and Venmo says it notifies both the sender and the recipient.

Pending because the recipient must verify or set up an account
If you sent money to a phone number or email address that is not verified or not linked to a Venmo account, the payment stays Pending. Your payment method may already have been charged at that point, but the money does not reach the recipient until they verify that contact detail or finish setting up their account. Venmo says an unclaimed payment expires after 30 days. If the contact is still not associated with an active Venmo account, the sender may be able to take the payment back through the Take Back option.
| Pending cause | What it usually means | What to do next | Timing Venmo states |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank-funded processing | The bank transfer has not cleared yet. | Wait for the estimated completion date shown in the transaction feed. | Certain bank-funded payments typically take 3-5 business days. |
| Unverified or unlinked recipient contact | The recipient has not verified the phone number or email, or has not finished account setup. | Ask the recipient to verify the contact detail or complete setup. If the contact is not linked to an active account, check whether Take Back is offered. | Unclaimed payments expire after 30 days, according to Venmo. |
When the recipient says nothing arrived
Venmo’s first check for an expected payment that was not received is to confirm the exact identifier that was used. Work through these steps in order.

When the payment went to the wrong person
Venmo says most payments cannot be canceled once they are sent. A Pending payment to unverified contact details is the main exception, as described above. For any other payment sent to the wrong person, Venmo’s guidance is practical rather than a reversal:

- Wrong friend: ask the recipient to repay the amount, or have them contact Venmo Support for help.
- Unexpected payment from a stranger: contact Venmo Support for help returning it. Do not send the money back on your own.

Notifications are not proof of receipt
You can adjust app notifications under Me > Settings > Notifications, as described in Venmo’s Notification Settings article. That article also says email notifications for “Payment sent” cannot be turned off. Venmo’s official guidance does not say that a missing push notification means a payment failed or was not received, so check the transaction detail rather than relying on the absence of an alert.
