Start with what you can see: if windows cover the desktop, select the small Show desktop area at the far-right end of the taskbar. If icons are missing from the background, turn them back on separately. Windows 11 has no manual Tablet mode switch; a touch-friendly layout on a 2-in-1 usually reflects how the device is configured.

When open windows cover the desktop
Select the small Show desktop area at the far end of the taskbar. Windows minimize to reveal the desktop; select the area again to restore the open windows.

If that area is unavailable or does nothing, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and enable Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop. Microsoft’s taskbar guidance describes the taskbar controls.
When desktop icons are missing
Showing the desktop does not necessarily restore icons hidden from it. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, select View, and make sure Show desktop icons is checked. Microsoft’s desktop icon instructions cover this setting.

If only built-in icons such as This PC or Recycle Bin are missing, right-click the desktop and choose Personalize > Themes > Desktop icon settings. Select the icons you want, then apply the change.
When a 2-in-1 switches to a touch-friendly layout
Windows 11 does not provide a manual Tablet mode on/off switch. On supported touch-capable devices, Windows adapts when it detects a detached keyboard or a change to tablet form, and adapts back when a keyboard is attached or the device returns to laptop form. Reattach the keyboard or return the device to laptop form if that is what you want.

Some 2-in-1 devices use a taskbar optimized for touch. If it is collapsed, swipe up from the bottom edge to expand it. The touch-optimization option can be changed in Taskbar settings. Microsoft explains these behaviors in its Windows 11 touch guidance.
When you may be on another desktop
Windows key+Tab opens Task View, where you can choose the desktop or window you want. Task View also opens from its taskbar button when that button is displayed. It is useful when an app is not simply covering the desktop but is open on a different virtual desktop. See Microsoft’s instructions for multiple desktops.

When the screen is a gaming home screen
Xbox mode is a full-screen gaming experience documented for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Microsoft Support says, “You can also exit Xbox mode by pressing Win + F11.” Use that shortcut, Game Bar settings, or Task View to return to the Windows desktop. On a touch device, swipe up from the bottom to open Task View. Xbox mode availability depends on supported markets and devices; Microsoft’s Windows Gaming: Full screen experience page, dated October 20, 2025, specifies Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2.
When the taskbar is hidden
Move the pointer to, or touch, the bottom edge of the screen to reveal a taskbar set to hide automatically. On a supported 2-in-1 with a touch-optimized taskbar, swipe up from the bottom edge to expand its collapsed state.

If these steps do not match your screen
These instructions address Windows desktop, icon, virtual desktop, touch-layout, taskbar, and Xbox-mode states. They do not establish a universal fix for every unusual display, such as one controlled by third-party kiosk or shell software. If none of the described interfaces appears, identify which app or device mode is controlling the screen before changing Windows desktop settings.
