To get an alert when a message arrives, enable notifications for your messaging app, then choose whether the alert should be visual, audible, or haptic. On iPhone, start at Settings > Notifications > Messages. In Google Messages on Android, open Messages settings > Notifications and turn on Incoming messages. If alerts are enabled but still missing, check interruption modes and conversation-level settings.
Choose how you want message alerts to work
Before changing settings, decide what should happen when a message arrives. A sound or repeated alert is easier to notice but can be disruptive; vibration or a visual notification may suit a quiet setting. You can also distinguish one conversation from others on iPhone. On Android, available choices depend on the phone and messaging app.

- Sound: Play a tone when a message arrives.
- Vibration or haptics: Use a tactile alert instead of, or alongside, sound.
- Visual alerts: Show notifications on the lock screen or in other selected locations.
- Repeat alerts or reminders: Prompt you again if you have not noticed a message.
Set up message alerts on iPhone
- Open Settings and tap Notifications, then Messages. On some iOS versions, the path is Settings > Apps > Messages > Notifications.
- Turn on Allow Notifications.
- Choose where notifications appear and whether they make a sound. These controls apply specifically to Messages.
- To choose a tone or haptic pattern, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Text Tone. Apple notes that sound and vibration settings here may affect other apps, so use the Messages notification page for app-specific alert choices.
- For a repeat alert, open Settings > Notifications > Messages > Customize Notifications > Repeat Alerts and select an available option. Apple documents a range from Never through 10 Times.
To assign one person a distinct tone, open the conversation, tap the contact, edit the contact information, and choose Text Tone. Menu labels and paths can vary by iOS release; if the Notifications-first path is different on your phone, look for Messages notification controls under Settings. Set up message alerts in Google Messages on Android
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile photo or icon, then tap Messages settings or Settings, depending on the app version.
- Tap Notifications and turn on Incoming messages.
- Choose sound, vibration, or reminder behavior if those options are available on your device.
Google says some instructions require Android 8.0 or newer. Labels and available controls can differ on customized versions of Android, so consult your phone maker’s instructions if the steps do not match your screen. Google Messages Help has instructions for notification and app settings.

If you need to make Google Messages the default SMS app, Google documents this route: Settings > Apps > Default apps > SMS app. The exact labels may vary by device.
Find why message alerts are missing
Check the following in order. A messaging app can be configured correctly while a phone-wide mode or a setting for one conversation prevents an alert.

- Confirm app notifications and incoming-message alerts are enabled. In Google Messages, check Messages settings > Notifications > Incoming messages. On iPhone, confirm Allow Notifications is on for Messages.
- Check for an active interruption mode. Android’s Do Not Disturb, Bedtime, Driving, or another mode may filter alerts by person, app, or other criteria. Turn the mode off from Quick Settings, and check whether an automatic schedule will turn it back on. Exact paths vary by phone. Android Help describes Modes and Do Not Disturb; some instructions apply to Android 14 and newer.
- Check the specific iPhone conversation. Open it and see whether Hide Alerts is enabled. That setting silences the selected conversation, not all messages.
- Review iPhone message filtering. Filtering can affect whether alerts appear. Apple specifically notes that in iOS 26, Filter Spam is on by default; when Screen Unknown Senders is also on, messages from unknown senders or identified spam do not generate a notification.
- Check whether the phone is silenced or Messages is already open. Apple says a silenced iPhone will not play a message sound, and an active Messages app does not show a separate notification for each new message.
- If you use Apple Watch, check where the notification went. Apple says Messages notifications go to either the watch or the iPhone, not both.
