If it only has the older red, white and yellow AV output, use the TV’s composite input—or a powered analog-to-HDMI converter when the television has HDMI only. Inspect the console’s rear ports before buying anything: the TV’s “smart” features do not determine compatibility.
Identify the Xbox 360’s video output
Look at the back of the console rather than relying on its age or front-panel design. Early original (“fat”) Xbox 360 configurations initially lacked digital video output, while later original units added HDMI. The Xbox 360 S and Xbox 360 E commonly include HDMI, but their rear layouts differ. Microsoft’s historical cable overview is available in “Confused about cables?”, and model-specific guidance is available from Xbox Support.

| Console output | Matching TV input | Use |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | HDMI | Direct HDMI connection |
| Yellow/white/red AV | Composite or AV | Xbox 360 composite cable |
| Red/green/blue plus red/white | Component | Xbox 360 Component HD AV cable |
| Any analog output | HDMI only | Powered analog-to-HDMI converter or scaler |
Check the smart TV’s inputs
- HDMI: Suitable for a 360 with HDMI, or for an active converter.
- Composite AV: Usually yellow video plus white and red audio. Some modern sets provide this through a manufacturer-specific breakout adapter.
- Component: Red, green and blue video, with separate red and white audio. The audio sockets must belong to the same component input group.
- USB and antenna/coaxial: These are not Xbox 360 video inputs.
A television may label sources as Input, Source, AV, Composite, Video, AUX, Line In or EXT. A 3.5-mm AV socket requires the exact adapter specified for that TV model; RCA plugs do not share a universal 3.5-mm pinout.

Connect an Xbox 360 with HDMI
- Turn off the Xbox 360.
- Disconnect any other AV cable from the console.
- Plug one end of a functioning HDMI cable into the console’s HDMI port.
- Plug the other end into a free HDMI input on the TV.
- Turn on the TV and press Input, Source or the equivalent button.
- Select the exact HDMI socket you used.
- Turn on the Xbox 360.
A standard HDMI cable is normally sufficient; a special “smart TV” or Xbox-branded cable is not required. Microsoft’s HDMI instructions also warn that leaving another AV cable connected can cause picture or sound problems: Xbox 360 High Speed HDMI Cable manual.

Connect an Xbox 360 with yellow, white and red composite cables
| Plug | Signal | TV socket |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | Composite video | Yellow or video input |
| White | Left audio | White or L |
| Red | Right audio | Red or R |
- Turn off the console and TV.
- Insert the Xbox 360 AV connector into the console.
- Connect yellow to video, white to left audio and red to right audio.
- If the cable has a switch, set it to TV, not HDTV.
- Turn on the television and select its AV/composite source.
- Turn on the Xbox 360.
Microsoft’s setup guide documents the color assignments and alternate source labels at Xbox 360 setup guide. On a genuinely mono TV or adapter with one audio input, Microsoft says either the white or red audio connector can be used.
Connect with component HD AV cables
Component is not the same as composite. Component video uses red, green and blue plugs; stereo audio remains on separate red and white plugs. The two red plugs can be confused, so follow the labels on the cable.

- Connect red, green and blue to the matching component video sockets.
- Connect the separate red and white audio plugs to the audio inputs assigned to that component source.
- Select Component on the TV and turn on the console.
- Choose a display setting supported by the television.
Do not put the yellow composite plug into a green component socket unless the TV manual explicitly documents a shared, configurable input. Component can support HD settings such as 480p, 720p and 1080i depending on the console, cable, selected setting and display; it does not make the console a native 4K or HDR source. See Microsoft’s Component HD AV Cable manual and archived component connection guidance.
When the TV has HDMI only
360 with HDMI
Use direct HDMI. A converter adds unnecessary cost and another possible failure point.

360 with component output
Use a powered component-to-HDMI converter or a retro-gaming scaler that accepts component and carries audio into the HDMI output.
360 with composite output
Use a powered composite/RCA-to-HDMI converter. A passive cable with RCA plugs on one end and HDMI on the other cannot perform analog-to-digital conversion unless it contains active electronics.

Choosing a scaler
Basic converters are inexpensive, but compatibility, processing and latency vary. A dedicated scaler can provide better deinterlacing, scaling and image controls at substantially higher cost. For example, RetroTINK lists the 2X Pro at $139.99 in its product catalog (RetroTINK products); the 5X Pro is listed at $325 (RetroTINK-5X Pro), while the 4K Pro is listed at $750 (RetroTINK-4K Pro). These are enthusiast options, not requirements for a 360 that already has HDMI.

Fix “No signal,” a blank screen or missing sound
- Confirm that the TV is on the exact input used.
- Reseat every plug and verify that the cable is connected to the console’s actual HDMI or AV port.
- Check the TV/HDTV switch and distinguish composite yellow from component red/green/blue.
- Disconnect competing AV cables when testing HDMI.
- Try another TV input, a known-good cable and a direct connection that bypasses receivers, soundbars, HDMI switches and capture devices.
- Turn off both devices, turn on the TV first, select its input manually, then start the Xbox 360.
- For component, ensure audio and video use the same TV input group. For converters, verify power and audio connections.
- Test the console on another display. If no display works, a damaged output port, cable, converter or console video hardware becomes more likely; this requires hardware testing rather than a settings change.
Reset incompatible Xbox 360 display settings
Use this when the console powers on but the TV reports no signal after a resolution or display-mode change.

This documented procedure will not repair a failed GPU, damaged HDMI socket, defective cable or incompatible converter. The source is Microsoft’s HDMI manual.
Picture but no sound
- With HDMI, check mute, volume, the TV’s selected audio output and whether the converter passes audio.
- With component, move the red and white audio plugs to the audio sockets assigned to that component input.
- With composite, keep the red and white plugs on the same AV input as the yellow video plug.
Black-and-white or incorrectly colored picture
- Check for composite plugs connected to component inputs or component plugs in the wrong order.
- Verify the cable switch and TV source mode.
- Consider PAL/NTSC compatibility for imported hardware or displays.
- Only use yellow-to-green sharing when the TV’s documentation explicitly supports it.
What picture quality to expect
- Direct HDMI: The simplest clean digital connection when the port exists.
- Composite: Broad legacy compatibility, but visibly soft, low-resolution video.
- Component: Often a substantially better analog picture and possible HD output, provided the TV or converter supports it.
- Upscaling: A 4K TV or scaler can enlarge the signal; it does not create native 4K rendering or HDR from Xbox 360 games.
What to buy, in the right order
- Xbox 360 with HDMI: buy or reuse a normal HDMI cable.
- Console without HDMI and a TV with matching analog inputs: buy the correct composite or component Xbox 360 AV cable.
- Analog console and HDMI-only TV: buy a powered converter that matches the output type.
- Several analog consoles or demanding image-quality requirements: consider a dedicated scaler such as a RetroTINK model.
Capture cards, HDMI switches and premium cables are not necessary for a basic one-console connection. Replacing the console with an HDMI-equipped used model can be simpler than assembling several adapters, but it adds the cost and risk of another used system.
