It is macOS’s broad label for Apple and third-party files that do not fit another storage category. Depending on your Mac’s current state, it can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary resources, fonts, app-support files and plug-ins. Start by identifying what is actually using space, then remove or move files you can identify through Finder or the app that created them.
What “System Data” means on a Mac
Apple Support defines System Data (called “Other” on some older macOS releases) as “a general category that measures the storage space used by all Apple and third-party files that don’t belong to any more-specific category.” It is therefore a classification, not a single directory and not a statement that every item is disposable.

The total can change as macOS creates, reuses or purges temporary material. App support data, virtual-memory files and plug-ins may be important to software you use. macOS also manages some of this storage itself, so a large bar does not by itself identify one safe deletion target or a universal cause.

| Earlier macOS versions | Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage | Inspect the storage breakdown and use the available management controls. |
Allow the panel time to calculate. Its figures can change after files are removed, after an app finishes indexing, or when macOS updates its accounting. Do not treat a temporarily high or low number as a permanent diagnosis.
Free space from files you can identify
Work through categories that clearly belong to you rather than trying to erase System Data as a whole. Apple’s storage guidance highlights these common sources:

- Downloads and installers you no longer need.
- Old iPhone, iPad or other device backups.
- Unused applications and their associated documents.
- Mail junk, deleted messages and large attachments.
- Trash contents.
- Large videos, photos, projects or archives that you have already backed up elsewhere.
When storage belongs to an application, use that application’s own library or account controls where possible. Deleting random folders inside ~/Library, /Library or protected system locations can break software, remove settings or create new errors without reliably reducing the reported category.

iCloud storage options
Storage settings may offer ways to keep content in iCloud and make it available on demand. This can reduce local usage, but it depends on your iCloud storage plan and network access. Confirm which files remain downloaded locally before accepting an option.

Optimize Storage
Optimization can remove some Apple TV content you have already watched and older local email attachments when space is needed. Review the details first if you need offline copies; optimization is a space-management choice, not a duplicate backup.
Automatic Trash emptying
macOS can empty items that have remained in the Trash for the period described in the setting. Enable it only if you are comfortable losing the normal recovery window, and empty the Trash manually when you are certain its contents are no longer needed.

What macOS already cleans automatically
Apple says macOS removes certain caches and logs that it considers safe to delete when space is needed. Those files may be recreated by the operating system or by applications. That is why manually deleting every cache is not a universal first step and why the System Data number may fall without a single visible folder disappearing.
Time Machine local snapshots are also managed automatically. Apple states that snapshots are stored when the disk has plenty of free space and are removed as they age or when space is needed; they are not supposed to prevent ordinary downloads, copying or installations.
Best Value
- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
If you need to force local-snapshot cleanup
Apple documents a temporary method: turn off automatic Time Machine backups in the Time Machine settings, wait for local snapshots to be deleted, then turn automatic backups on again. This can remove local recovery history, so use it only when the trade-off is acceptable and make sure your regular backup destination is available afterward.
Move large personal libraries instead of deleting them
If Storage identifies personal video, photo or project files as the main consumer, moving them to an external SSD for Mac or another compatible storage drive can free internal capacity while preserving the files. Apple specifically gives Photos and iMovie libraries as examples of content that can be moved.
- Complete or verify a backup of the library or project.
- Connect the external storage and confirm that macOS can read and write to it.
- Quit the relevant app, then move its library or project using Finder according to that app’s documented workflow.
- Open the library from its new location and verify representative photos, videos or projects.
- Only after verification and a separate backup should you remove the original from the internal drive, then empty Trash if appropriate.
Keep the drive connected whenever the app needs the library. Unplugging it while a library is open can cause missing-media messages or interrupted writes.

Safe Mode: a temporary troubleshooting measure
Apple says starting a Mac in Safe Mode clears certain system caches, which macOS recreates as needed. This may help when you need enough temporary capacity to complete a space-dependent task, such as an update. It is not a guaranteed permanent cleanup and does not establish that caches caused the full System Data bar. Use Apple’s Safe Mode instructions for your Mac’s processor type, then restart normally and recheck Storage.
When to stop deleting and get help
- Do not try to delete the System Data category itself; it is only a label.
- Do not remove unknown files from protected operating-system locations.
- Do not assume Time Machine snapshots are the cause of every large System Data reading.
- Recheck Storage after each meaningful cleanup because category totals can be reclassified or marked purgeable.
If the Mac remains nearly full after removing identifiable personal files, or if storage accounting behaves unexpectedly, contact Apple Support. Provide your macOS version, the Storage breakdown and what you already removed so support can diagnose the specific system state without resorting to risky blind deletion.
