The Roku app doesn’t “add a TV” the way a smart-home app adds a brand of TV. What you’re really pairing is the Roku device that powers the streaming—either a Roku streaming player connected to your TV or a Roku TV where the TV’s built-in system is the Roku device.
Below is the fastest, most reliable way to connect your Roku device to the Roku app so you can control it, use the remote features, and stream on supported models.

What It Means to Add a TV to the Roku App
In practice, “adding a TV to the Roku app” usually means one of these:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Pairing the Roku remote so your phone can control the TV screen.
- Linking your Roku device to your Roku account so it appears across devices and services.
- Connecting to a Roku TV (TCL/Hisense/Sharp, etc.) where the television itself runs Roku OS.
If you can already see a remote control panel in the Roku app but it won’t connect, the fix is still pairing/discovery—not installing a separate “TV device” inside the app.
#1 Best Overall
- Use your phone or tablet as a remote control for your Roku device
- Browse a hand-picked selection of great movies and TV shows using What’s On
- Use your voice or mobile keyboard to search for movies, TV shows, actors and directors
- Launch your favorite channels directly from your mobile device
- Add channels and games from the Roku Channel Store
Prerequisites Before You Start
- Both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network (same SSID). If they’re on different networks, the app often can’t discover the Roku.
- Your Roku device is powered on and showing the home screen.
- Roku app installed on your phone: the latest version is recommended.
- Permissions allowed for the Roku app (Local Network on iOS is especially common—more below).
Optional but helpful: you know your Roku device name and you’re signed into the same Roku account you use on the TV.
Method 1: Pair Your Roku Device (Remote/Control) in the Roku App
This is the standard path. Once paired, the Roku app can control your TV through the Roku device.
- Open the Roku app on your phone.
- Tap Remote (or the remote icon) and choose Set up / Pair your remote if prompted.
- Follow the on-screen steps to detect your Roku device.
- If the app asks for a pairing method, choose the option that matches your Roku’s UI (often automatic detection or pairing via a code).
When pairing succeeds, your Roku app should show remote controls (Home, Back, direction pad, etc.) and reflect the Roku UI.
Method 2: Add a Roku TV Built Into the Television
If your television is a Roku TV, the TV is already the Roku device. You typically don’t “add the TV” as a separate object—you pair your phone to the TV’s Roku system.
- On the Roku TV, go to Settings.
- Open Remotes & devices.
- Select Remote (or Set up remote, depending on your model).
- Choose Pair remote (or confirm the TV is ready to pair).
- Open the Roku app on your phone and repeat the pairing flow in Method 1.
Roku TVs differ slightly by model and Roku OS version, but the “Remotes & devices” area is the common landing spot.

- Free Roku Originals featuring Hollywood’s biggest stars in original series and movies you can’t watch anywhere else.
- Enjoy Spanish-language content and 65+ live Spanish channels.
- Create a free account for your own personalized experience.
Method 3: Add (Link) a Roku Device by Using Your Account
Pairing usually handles control. Linking to your Roku account helps with device management and syncing features. If you’re setting up a new phone, do this so everything stays consistent.
- Open the Roku app and sign in to your Roku account.
- Make sure your Roku device is on the same network and is connected.
- In the Roku app, check Devices (or a device list area).
- If your Roku device isn’t listed, run the remote pairing flow again (Method 1). Pairing and account linking often resolve together.
If the app shows a device name but the remote won’t work, treat it as a pairing/discovery issue rather than an account issue.
Platform-Specific Steps (iPhone, iPad, Android)
Most Roku pairing failures come down to one of two things: network discovery is blocked, or your permissions prevent local-network access.
iPhone and iPad
iOS uses Local Network permissions. If that’s blocked, the Roku app may show an empty device list.
- On your iPhone/iPad, open Settings.
- Scroll to find the Roku app.
- Tap Local Network.
- Turn it On.
- Return to the Roku app and try Remote > Set up again.
If you recently updated iOS, this permission can reset. Re-check it after updates if discovery suddenly breaks.

- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Android
Android typically doesn’t have the same Local Network toggle as iOS, but the Roku app still needs network permissions and a stable connection.
- Open Settings on your Android device.
- Go to Apps > Roku.
- Open Permissions and allow network-related permissions if prompted.
- Ensure you’re on the same Wi‑Fi SSID as your Roku device.
- Reopen the Roku app and try pairing under Remote.
If you use a VPN, disconnect it first. Many VPNs interfere with local device discovery.
What If the Roku App Can’t Find Your TV?
When pairing fails, don’t guess—work through the same set of checks. Most fixes are quick once you know where to look.
Check Wi‑Fi and Network Isolation
- Same Wi‑Fi network: Your phone and Roku must be on the same local network.
- Guest Wi‑Fi: Avoid guest networks; they often block local discovery.
- AP isolation: Some routers have “Client isolation” or “AP isolation.” Turn it off for the devices.
If your router supports separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz SSIDs, put both devices on the same band to reduce edge-case issues.
Verify Remote Pairing Settings on the Roku Device
On the Roku TV or Roku streaming player:
- Go to Settings.
- Open Remotes & devices.
- Look for Remote or Set up a new device.
- Make sure pairing is enabled and you aren’t trying to pair with a remote that’s already assigned.
If you see a message about remotes being “already paired,” remove/unpair the old connection in that same menu and then re-run setup in the phone app.

Restart Sequence That Usually Fixes Discovery
This sequence resolves stale network discovery state more often than “just re-open the app.”
- Power off your Roku device (unplug it if needed).
- Power off your router.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Power on the router and wait for it to fully boot (typically 2–3 minutes).
- Power on your Roku device and wait for the home screen.
- Open the Roku app and start pairing again.
Try Alternative Pairing Paths
- Use the Roku app’s manual pairing path: If the app offers a code or pairing option, use it instead of waiting for discovery.
- Use Bluetooth audio/remote features only if available: Some pairing options depend on device capabilities. Follow what the app shows on your specific phone model.
- Check for multiple Roku devices: If you have more than one, the app may find the wrong one. Confirm the Roku name displayed on-screen.
Common Mistakes That Prevent Pairing
- Wrong Wi‑Fi: Phone on cellular or a different SSID.
- Local Network permission off (iOS): The Roku app can’t see devices on your LAN.
- VPN enabled: It can break discovery by changing network routes.
- Trying to pair while the Roku is mid-setup: Leave the Roku at the home screen during pairing.
- Using an outdated Roku app: Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
If the problem started after a recent router change, that’s a strong hint to revisit network isolation, SSID separation, and permissions.
How to Confirm the TV/Device Is Actually Added
Once paired, you should see clear proof inside the Roku app.
- You can open Remote and press Home or Back—and the Roku TV/player responds.
- The app shows your Roku device name in a devices list or remote header.
- Buttons like Play (where available) control playback on the Roku screen.
If the app lists your Roku device but buttons don’t respond, it’s not fully paired. Re-run the pairing flow and verify the Roku is on the home screen during setup.

Can I add a non-Roku TV to the Roku app?
Not directly. The Roku app controls Roku streaming players and Roku TVs. If your TV isn’t a Roku model and you don’t have a Roku player connected, the Roku app won’t be able to control it.

I paired my remote before, but it disappeared. What should I do?
Re-open the Roku app and start pairing again under the Remote setup flow. If you’re on iPhone/iPad, re-check Settings > Roku > Local Network because iOS updates sometimes reset permissions.
Why does it work on one phone but not another?
Usually it’s permissions or network routing. Confirm both phones are on the same Wi‑Fi, check iOS Local Network permission, and disable any VPN on the phone that fails.
What if I have multiple Roku devices in the house?
Make sure you pair to the correct Roku device name displayed on your TV/player. During setup, the app can discover more than one device on the network, so confirm the target before finishing.
Do I need Bluetooth or mobile data?
For initial discovery and remote control pairing, local Wi‑Fi is the usual requirement. Mobile data and Bluetooth aren’t the primary requirement unless your app/device offers a specific pairing mode.
Bottom Line
To add a TV to the Roku app, you pair the Roku device that runs on (or is connected to) that TV. Keep your phone and Roku on the same Wi‑Fi, enable iOS Local Network permission if you’re on iPhone or iPad, and use the Roku app’s Remote pairing flow.
If pairing can’t find your TV, the fix is almost always network discovery (guest Wi‑Fi, isolation settings, VPN) or remote pairing settings on the Roku device—restart in the right order and try the manual pairing option if available.
