1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA distance-vector routing protocol lets routers learn routes by exchanging destination and route-cost information with neighboring routers. Each router uses those reports to choose a next hop; “distance” means a protocol-defined routing cost, not geographic distance. RIP is a familiar example, but its hop-count metric and limits are not shared by every protocol in the family.
How does a distance-vector protocol work?
A router begins with routes it knows locally, receives route information from neighboring routers, and compares the advertised costs with its current route estimates. If a neighbor offers a preferable route, the router can update the route’s next hop and cost. The routers make these decisions using information exchanged across the network rather than each independently receiving a complete network map.

This approach is associated with the Bellman-Ford algorithm. RFC 1058 describes RIP as one of the distance-vector algorithms and notes that the family is also known by Bellman-Ford terminology. The precise update rules and metric depend on the protocol.

Distance is the value a protocol uses to represent the cost of reaching a destination. It may be a hop count or a combination of metrics; it is not a measurement of physical distance.

RIP uses hop count. Cisco’s description of IGRP, by contrast, discusses a vector of metrics for characterizing paths and a composite metric for route selection. IGRP can also select multiple paths within a specified metric range. These examples show why “distance-vector” describes how route information is exchanged and used, not one universal metric.
What limitations can distance-vector routing have?
Stale routes and counting to infinity
After a route fails, routers may temporarily retain outdated reachability information. Neighboring routers can then mislead one another into increasing their estimated route costs step by step, a problem called “counting to infinity.” RFC 1058 describes this behavior as a challenge for distance-vector routing.

Split horizon and poisoned reverse
Split horizon reduces some loop risks by leaving out routes learned from a neighbor when sending an update back to that same neighbor. Poisoned reverse instead advertises those routes back with an infinite metric. Both techniques mitigate particular loop patterns; neither should be treated as a guarantee against every possible routing loop.

For IPv4 router implementations of RIP, RFC 1812 requires split horizon and says split horizon with poisoned reverse should be implemented. That requirement applies to RIP implementations in the specified IPv4-router context, not to every distance-vector protocol.

What are RIP’s specific limits and timers?
RIP illustrates how a particular protocol’s metric and timers can shape its behavior. Cisco documents the following values for RIP; they are not universal distance-vector settings.
| RIP parameter | Documented value | Meaning and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Usable hop-count range | 0–15 hops | Cisco describes 16 as unreachable, limiting the network diameter RIP can support. |
| Update interval | 30 seconds | Interval described for the Cisco platform documentation. |
| Route unusable timer | 180 seconds | Time described before a route becomes unusable in that documentation. |
| Route removal timer | 240 seconds | Time described before an entry is removed in that documentation. |
Cisco’s RIP information page was updated June 25, 2026. Its hop-count ceiling and timer values describe RIP, not the distance-vector family as a whole.

What to compare when evaluating routing protocols
To distinguish protocols in this family, look at the information exchanged, the metric or metric vector, route-selection rules, whether multiple paths can be retained, update and convergence behavior, loop-mitigation mechanisms, and the network scale or topology the protocol is intended to support. RIP and IGRP differ on several of these points, so the family name alone does not tell you how a specific protocol behaves.
