How Display Glasses Work: Virtual Screens, Field of View, and Tracking Explained

Display glasses use near-eye optics to deliver a virtual screen. Learn how optical designs, field of view, tracking, and device compatibility shape the experience.

Display glasses send image light through near-eye optics so you perceive a virtual screen in front of you. The screen is an optical image—not a physical panel floating in the room—and how much of your surroundings you can see, how wide the image appears, and whether it stays in place as you move depend on the specific design.

How do display glasses work?

A small display or optical engine creates image light. Lenses, reflectors, or a waveguide then direct that light toward your eyes, where you perceive a virtual image. In optical see-through designs, light from the real world also reaches the eye; the balance between the image and the visible surroundings varies by product. RayNeo’s explanation of its optical-engine and waveguide approach and a 2020 University of Rochester research survey of near-eye display architectures provide examples of how these systems are built.

That virtual screen should not be confused with a fixed-size television or monitor. For example, RayNeo’s Air 3s product page advertises a “201-inch virtual screen,” but that is a manufacturer presentation, not a universal physical screen size. Apparent size depends on the viewing geometry and the product’s optics. RayNeo Air 3s product details

Birdbath optics and waveguides: what is the difference?

These terms describe different ways of routing image light to the eye. Neither architecture is inherently best for every wearer or use case; the design involves trade-offs in packaging and optics, and the available sources do not provide standardized cross-product measurements that establish one as universally brighter or clearer.

Birdbath optics

A birdbath system uses folded reflective optics to direct image light toward the eye. The folded path is part of the optical design, rather than an image appearing on a physical panel in the room.

Waveguides

A waveguide sends light through a lens-like substrate and extracts it toward the eye. The category includes differing implementations, so the word “waveguide” alone does not establish how a particular pair of glasses will look or feel.

Smart Re-Centering snaps your view back instantly.
  • 【BIGGEST: THE ULTIMATE IMMERSIVE GIANT — 174″ Screen, 58° FOV, 1200p】The largest virtual display in consumer XR. Period. A 174″ screen powered by Sony's latest-generation Micro-OLED panel pushes 1200p per eye at a class-leading 58° field of view with a 120 Hz refresh rate. Every frame is edge-to-edge sharp, silky-smooth, and jaw-droppingly vivid. It's like strapping an IMAX to your face.
  • 【SMARTEST: 9-LEVEL DIMMING + AUTO TRANSPARENCY — No Software Needed】 Another reason The Beast is the smartest XR glasses ever made. One tap shifts between crystal-clear AR and full cinematic blackout across 9+ electrochromic levels — no app, no software, just hardware intelligence. Auto Transparency adapts between immersion and awareness on its own. Bright office, dim plane, pitch-dark bedroom — The Beast reads the moment for you. No glare. No reflections. Just pure immersion.
  • 【BOLDEST: NEXT-LEVEL CLARITY & AUDIO — 1250 Nits + HARMAN AudioEFX】1250 nits of peak brightness — over 2× brighter than the competition — means you can actually see your screen outdoors, in sunlight, no squinting required. The Beast gives you both — cranked to eleven.

Manufacturer and research descriptions of these approaches are useful for understanding the basic architectures, but a category label does not substitute for product-level information about the visible surroundings, fit, image quality, or comfort. What does FOV mean on display glasses?

Field of view (FOV) is the angular width of the image visible to the wearer. A larger advertised FOV can indicate a broader image, but it does not by itself tell you whether the image is sharp at the edges, comfortable to view, easy to align within the eye box, or how much of the real-world view remains visible.

XREAL xbx a01+ AR Glasses, 147'' Big-Screen Display for Movies & Gaming
  • YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
  • ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
  • 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
  • LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.

Product figures should be treated as model-specific manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. RayNeo advertises a 59° FOV for its GT Series, while VITURE lists up to 58° for The Beast. Those figures should not be treated as a direct comparison unless the manufacturers use matching measurement methods. RayNeo GT Series product page; VITURE The Beast product and academy page

Do display glasses track your head?

Some do, but tracking capability varies by model and may rely on sensors in the glasses, a connected device, or software. The distinction between 3DoF and 6DoF describes what movement the system tracks:

  • [Comfort Reminder]:For your comfort and the best viewing experience, we suggest giving your eyes (and yourself) a 10-minute break after every 30 minutes of use.
  • 3DoF (three degrees of freedom) tracks rotation: looking up or down, turning left or right, and tilting your head. Software can adjust the virtual screen in response to those rotations.
  • 6DoF (six degrees of freedom) also tracks translation—movement through space—so the system can respond when you change position as well as when you turn your head.

Do not infer support across an entire brand or product category. VITURE describes 3DoF in its product material; XREAL describes 6DoF support for a separate product. What should you check before choosing display glasses?

Compare the specific glasses and the devices you will connect to them. Manufacturer specifications are not a substitute for independent, method-matched comparisons, so prioritize details that affect your actual setup and fit.

A free lens shade is included - snap it on for full immersion, off to stay present.
  • 【SONY MICRO-OLED COLOR, TUNED AT THE SOURCE】 Sony Micro-OLED panels bring streaming, videos, movies, and compatible 3D content to life with 1600 nits peak brightness and a wide 50 degree field of view. Color is calibrated in the Micro-OLED itself rather than through an extra color-management chip, so what you see stays true. Whether you are in a bedroom, dorm, hotel room, or shared apartment, VITURE Pro 2 creates a vivid personal display without needing a TV.
  • Optical architecture: Find out whether the product uses birdbath optics, a waveguide, or another design. The term helps describe the approach, but does not establish image quality on its own.
  • FOV and usable image: Separate advertised FOV from independently measured FOV. Also look for information about edge sharpness, eye-box alignment, fit, and how much real-world view remains.
  • Display details: Check resolution and brightness, and note the measurement method when one is stated. Do not compare figures measured under different or unspecified conditions as if they were equivalent.
  • Tracking: Confirm whether the exact model supports 3DoF, 6DoF, or neither, and whether tracking depends on onboard sensors, a connected device, or software.
  • Video connection and source compatibility: Check whether the glasses require video over USB-C DisplayPort, then verify that your exact phone, computer, or console supports that output. A USB-C connector alone does not prove that a device can send video. RayNeo specifically advises Air 3s buyers to check for DisplayPort over USB-C. RayNeo Air 3s product details
  • Adapters: Do not assume a generic USB-C adapter or hub will work. Confirm that the source device provides the required video output and that the adapter is supported for the particular glasses and setup.
  • Prescription and comfort: Check support for your prescription, the availability and fit of any model-specific lens frame or insert, and the glasses’ weight and wearing comfort. VITURE lists a separate prescription lens frame for Pro 2; confirm that an accessory is available and compatible with the exact model you are considering. VITURE product and academy information
