Neither delivery apps nor ordering directly from a restaurant is always cheaper or more reliable. In the U.S., compare the same restaurant, items, delivery address and approximate order time in both channels, then judge the final checkout total, available menu and order-specific delivery details. Headline delivery fees and menu prices alone can give a misleading comparison.
Is ordering directly from a restaurant cheaper than DoorDash or Uber Eats?
It depends on the restaurant, location, order and any promotion or membership that applies. A marketplace order may include menu prices, tax, tip, delivery and service fees, as well as possible small-order, long-distance, regulatory or demand-related charges. The restaurant’s own channel may have different item prices, delivery charges or fulfillment arrangements. Compare the final totals for an identical order rather than assuming either channel wins.

DoorDash says its fees vary by restaurant, membership and local rules. In a revised U.S. fee structure rolling out in much of the country beginning in late July 2026, the delivery fee is fixed by merchant while the service fee varies; listed market exceptions apply, and customers see the service fee before checkout. Use the amount shown for your order, not a fee quoted for another market. DoorDash’s fee guide also describes possible additional charges and qualifying promotions.

DoorDash’s help page describes a $9.99 monthly subscription and a $12 qualifying subtotal for eligible orders in some regions. Those terms are not a universal offer: check current local price, participating restaurants and eligibility at checkout. Include the membership cost when comparing repeated orders, and count savings only on orders where it actually applies.

Make an apples-to-apples checkout comparison
- Choose the same restaurant and enter the same delivery address in both channels.
- Add identical items, quantities and customizations, and compare at roughly the same time.
- Compare item prices, taxes, delivery and service charges, possible additional fees, promotions, minimum-order conditions and optional tip. Use the final checkout total.
- Check pickup as a separate option. DoorDash says its pickup orders have no service fees, but menu prices and other conditions can still differ. See DoorDash’s fee guide.
- For a direct order, confirm whether delivery is handled by restaurant staff, a third-party courier or another arrangement; the restaurant’s own ordering page does not by itself tell you who fulfills the order.
Are food delivery app menu prices higher?
They can differ, but there is no supported universal markup to apply. DoorDash says restaurants set their delivery menu prices and are not required to match in-store prices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also identified differences between app and restaurant prices, fee disclosure, variable charges, promotional restrictions and total price as issues under consideration in its proposed rulemaking. That is not a finding that every restaurant raises every app price. Check the same items on both menus. DoorDash’s explanation of menu pricing and the FTC’s consumer notice describe these issues.
Merchant charges help explain why restaurant and app channels can have different economics, but they are not the same as a customer surcharge and do not prove that a restaurant passes a particular cost to diners. DoorDash describes its Online Ordering product as commission-free but subject to payment processing; it lists a 6% pickup rate under stated conditions. Uber’s U.S. merchant terms list marketplace fees of 20%, 25% or 30%, depending on package and conditions, and a 15% fee for merchant-managed delivery. These are platform-published merchant terms, not amounts automatically added to a customer’s receipt. Terms can depend on the package and arrangement. Which gives you more choice?
A marketplace makes it convenient to browse participating restaurants in one app, but it shows only the merchants, menus and items available on that platform for your location and time. Ordering directly can reveal a restaurant’s own ordering channel and terms. Neither channel can be assumed to offer the fuller menu or more restaurants in every neighborhood. Search for the restaurant in both places and compare what is actually available for your order.

Is it more reliable to order from the restaurant?
There is no basis here for saying one channel is generally more accurate or punctual. Uber’s merchant guidance describes order reliability in terms of a store’s ability to accept and complete orders in a timely manner. DoorDash’s online-ordering terms caution that errors may occur and do not guarantee service reliability or menu-item availability. Those platform descriptions and contractual caveats are not independent comparisons of delivery speed, order accuracy or customer satisfaction. For the specific order, look at whether the restaurant is accepting orders, which items are available, the estimated delivery time and any cancellation or substitution details. For direct orders, also check who is delivering and what support or recourse the restaurant provides. Treat the estimate and stated policies as order-specific information, not a guarantee of comparative performance.

What the FTC’s fee review means for diners
In April 2026, the FTC invited consumers to share experiences with online food and grocery delivery fees and pricing, as part of proposed rulemaking—not a final nationwide rule. Its announcement frames clear pricing as a consumer issue; Bureau of Consumer Protection Director Christopher Mufarrige said, “Clear and truthful pricing is essential to competitive markets.” The agency’s notice is useful context for why total-price and fee disclosures matter, but it does not establish a final new requirement for every ordering channel.
