Dietary cholesterol and plant sterols enter intestinal cells, but not all of what enters stays in the body. ABC transporter proteins can move sterols from gut epithelial cells back into the intestinal lumen, limiting net absorption. A 2000 Science perspective by H. Allayee, B. A. Laffitte, and A. J. Lusis discussed a separate study that implicated two such transporters.
What the 2000 “absorbing study” was about
“Biochemistry. An absorbing study of cholesterol” is a Science perspective published December 1, 2000, in volume 290, issue 5497, pages 1709–1711. Its authors were H. Allayee, B. A. Laffitte, and A. J. Lusis. The perspective discussed a separate experimental paper by Berge and colleagues, titled “Accumulation of dietary cholesterol in sitosterolemia caused by mutations in adjacent ABC transporters.” PubMed’s record identifies the perspective and its connection to the Berge study.

The key point is that the transporters were implicated in sterol efflux: they move plant and animal sterols, including cholesterol, out of intestinal epithelial cells and back into the gut lumen. That return flow can reduce the net amount absorbed. The perspective is not itself the Berge team’s experimental paper, so its authors should not be credited with that study’s methods or data.
How dietary cholesterol absorption works
Absorption is not simply a one-way passage from food into the bloodstream. Sterols are taken up from the intestinal contents into gut cells, and the body regulates how much is retained versus returned to the gut. ABC transporter-mediated efflux is one part of that balance.

Uptake into intestinal cells
Dietary sterols become available to intestinal epithelial cells during digestion and can enter those cells. The sources describe the overall processes of absorption, transport, and excretion, rather than establishing one universal absorption amount for all people or meals.
Efflux back into the gut lumen
Once sterols are in intestinal cells, ABC transporters can move some back into the lumen. This is efflux, not uptake: it sends sterols out of the cells in the direction of the gut contents. By limiting the amount that remains available for transfer onward, efflux helps regulate net absorption.

Other controls inside the cell
Transport is not the only mechanism involved. A review in the Journal of Nutrition also discusses cholesterol esterification and nuclear hormone receptors as processes related to regulating intestinal sterol absorption. These are distinct from the physical movement of sterols into or out of a cell: esterification is an intracellular chemical process, while nuclear hormone receptors are involved in transcriptional regulation. The review provides broader mechanistic context.

Why plant sterols and cholesterol appear together
The 2000 perspective addresses sterols from both plant and animal foods. Cholesterol is an animal sterol; plant foods provide other sterols. The study it discussed drew attention to transporters implicated in handling both categories, which is why the article’s subject is broader than cholesterol alone. “We obtain sterols from the animal and plant food that we eat,” the authors wrote in the perspective’s abstract.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Established in the cited perspective: the authors discussed a study implicating two ABC transporter proteins in moving plant and animal sterols from gut epithelial cells into the gut lumen.
- Broader mechanistic context: the review describes efflux alongside esterification and transcriptional regulation as parts of intestinal sterol handling.
- Not a human treatment claim: the review discusses findings in mice. Animal-model findings should not be presented as proof of a clinical effect or treatment outcome in people.
- No numerical absorption estimate here: the cited abstract and review material do not provide a central quantitative result for the perspective, so they do not support a specific percentage of dietary cholesterol absorbed.
