Most Roman glass was made by melting silica-bearing sand with natron, a mineral soda flux, and lime. Large furnaces produced raw glass in slabs; workers broke those slabs into chunks for shipment to workshops, where artisans reheated the glass and shaped it into vessels, beads, jewellery, and other objects. The basic sequence is well supported, though recipes, supply routes, and production sites varied over time.
What ingredients did Roman glassmakers use?
Ordinary Roman glass was generally soda-lime-silica glass. Silica came from suitable sand or another siliceous material. Natron supplied soda, which helped the mixture melt at a workable temperature, while lime helped stabilize the finished glass. Roman glass chemistry and ancient descriptions support natron’s importance, but neither sand nor alkali came from one source for every glassmaking operation.

These ingredients did not guarantee perfectly colourless glass. Iron impurities in the raw materials could give fresh glass a pale blue or green tint. Glassmakers could change the result with mineral additives, but there was no single recipe used throughout the Roman world.
How did the Romans make glass?
1. Melt raw materials in primary furnaces
At primary glassmaking sites, workers heated the raw materials in large furnaces to produce raw glass. Archaeological evidence includes large tank furnaces in the eastern Mediterranean. The glass cooled in massive slabs, which workers broke into chunks for transport. 2. Move raw glass to workshops
Instead of making every finished vessel beside a primary furnace, Roman producers often shipped raw-glass chunks to secondary workshops. These workshops reheated the material and made objects for local use and trade. Evidence from Roman Britain supports secondary glassworking there, but does not establish primary glass production in the province. The pattern of production in large furnaces followed by workshop shaping is strong, but it should not be treated as a rule without exceptions across every place and period.
Egypt and the Levant are identified as important primary production regions. The precise locations and supply routes are not fully settled: ancient writers mention other places, and the evidence for early Roman production centres is incomplete. Studies of natron and raw-material provenance discuss how production geography is inferred from texts and glass chemistry: Jackson et al., “Glassmaking using natron from el-Barnugi (Egypt); Pliny and the Roman glass industry” and Degryse and Schneider, “Pliny the Elder and Sr–Nd isotopes”.

3. Reheat and shape the glass
Workshop artisans heated raw glass until it could be worked, then formed it using techniques suited to the object. Glassblowing, developed on the Levantine coast in the mid-first century BCE according to the Corinium Museum, made it possible to form hollow vessels by blowing molten glass rather than building them around a removable core. Workshops also produced beads, jewellery, mosaic tesserae, and other objects. The museum’s overview describes these materials and techniques: Roman Glassworking.

Glassmakers could use mineral compounds to alter the colour or appearance of glass. Iron impurities often produced pale blue-green glass; antimony oxide could decolourise it, while copper, cobalt, and manganese compounds could create colours. These are documented methods, not ingredients in one universal formula. The resulting colour depended on the glass and the additives used.

How did Romans make clear glass?
Roman glassmakers could reduce unwanted colour by adding antimony oxide, which acted as a decolourising agent. But “clear” did not necessarily mean perfectly colourless by modern standards: the starting glass could contain iron impurities that left a blue or green cast, and results varied with the raw materials and treatment. Some Roman glass was intentionally coloured rather than decolourised.
Did Romans recycle glass?
Yes. Broken glass, known as cullet, was collected and reheated for reuse. Recycling meant that a new batch did not always have to be made entirely from raw materials. It also makes chemical analysis harder: when glass from different batches is mixed, an object’s composition may reflect both its original raw glass and later recycled material, rather than pointing to one place of manufacture. What can—and can’t—be reconstructed?
The broad production chain is supported by tank furnaces, chunks of raw glass found in trade contexts, and chemical analysis: primary production often supplied material that secondary workshops shaped into objects. Chemical studies can help distinguish groups of glass and infer raw-material origins, but recycling can blur those signals. As a result, the process is clearer than a single empire-wide map of production sites, recipes, or routes.

The Corinium Museum quotes Strabo’s description of glassware being available for a copper coin; that is the museum’s English rendering of Geography 16.2.25. It also quotes Trimalchio, a character in Petronius’ Satyricon 50, saying he prefers glass because “glass at least does not smell.” These passages illustrate literary perceptions of glass, not direct technical records from glassmakers.
