A desktop GUI agent is a system that observes a screen, chooses an action, executes it through a computer-control layer, and checks the resulting screen state. The model is only one part: the runner, observation loop, state tracking, permissions, and verification all affect whether a task succeeds. UI-TARS, Claude Computer Use, and OSWorld 2.0 illustrate different parts of that system—not three interchangeable agents.
What a desktop GUI agent actually does
A GUI agent works through the same visible interface a person uses: it may inspect a screenshot, identify a control, click or type, and inspect the updated screen. Its basic loop is:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Observe: Capture the current screen and identify relevant content, controls, and visible state.
- Decide: Choose the next action in light of the task, constraints, and information gathered so far.
- Act: Send a mouse or keyboard action through a runner that can operate the desktop.
- Check: Capture the screen again and determine whether the action had the intended effect.
The model may interpret screenshots and propose actions, but a separate application or tool layer often captures the display and executes those actions. An agent that clicks correctly can still fail if it forgets an earlier requirement, misses information that appears later, or assumes a save or submission succeeded without checking.
How UI-TARS, Claude Computer Use, and OSWorld fit together
| Name | What it represents | What the cited material supports | What not to infer |
|---|---|---|---|
| UI-TARS | A GUI model described as taking screenshots and producing mouse and keyboard interactions. | The original paper reports benchmark results, including OSWorld scores of 24.6 at 50 steps and 22.7 at 15 steps in its own evaluation setup. Read the UI-TARS paper. | Those paper-specific scores are not directly comparable with OSWorld 2.0 results. |
| UI-TARS Desktop | An application that connects a model to computer operations. | Its quick-start documentation describes screenshot perception, mouse and keyboard control, model-provider or endpoint configuration, and a local operator. See the UI-TARS Desktop quick start. | A local operator does not establish that the model inference also runs locally. |
| Claude Computer Use | A computer-use capability described in Anthropic’s privacy guidance. | The guidance describes interpreting screen content, moving a cursor, clicking, and entering text; it also says screenshots, user inputs, and outputs are processed and collected. Read Anthropic’s Computer Use data guidance. | The cited material does not establish a current API schema, supported model versions, implementation limits, pricing, or performance ranking. |
| OSWorld 2.0 / OSWorld-V2 | A benchmark and evaluation environment for computer-use workflows, not an agent model. | The 2026 paper evaluates longer, realistic tasks; the repository documents versioned benchmark components and recommends osworld-v2.1. Read the OSWorld 2.0 paper and check the OSWorld-V2 repository. | A benchmark result is meaningful only with its task set, release, action budget, model configuration, and completion metric attached. |
UI-TARS-2’s report gives another example of why scores need their evaluation context: it reports 47.5 on OSWorld, as well as 88.2 on Online-Mind2Web, 50.6 on WindowsAgentArena, and 73.3 on AndroidWorld. These are author-reported results in that report’s setup, not OSWorld 2.0 scores. See the UI-TARS-2 report.

What OSWorld 2.0 says about long desktop workflows
OSWorld 2.0 was designed around 108 longer-horizon computer-use workflows. The paper reports a median human completion time of about 1.6 hours per task. Its abstract reports that Claude Opus 4.8 with maximum thinking and batched tool calls fully completed 20.6% of tasks at the 500-step cap, with a 54.8% partial score under the paper’s reporting setup. These figures describe that model configuration and benchmark—not all desktop tasks or every form of computer use. OSWorld 2.0 paper.
The paper also reports 318 average tool calls for Claude Opus 4.7 using maximum thinking, compared with about 30 in OSWorld 1.0. The authors’ analysis points to workflow-level weaknesses: agents can lose track of constraints, miss information that arrives during a task, guess instead of asking for clarification, skip verification, and struggle to recover hidden state.

That distinction matters when diagnosing failures. A system may be capable of recognizing a button yet unable to maintain a multi-step plan or notice that a result changed elsewhere in the workflow. More actions alone do not guarantee completion; the agent also needs persistent requirements, timely observations, and checks against the intended outcome.
Build the agent as a closed-loop system
Start with a narrow operator that exposes only the computer actions the agent needs. Keep planning and state management separate from the model’s immediate action choice, and treat each consequential action as unconfirmed until a new observation verifies its effect.

- Turn the request into a task contract. Record the desired end state, explicit constraints, required artifacts, and any decisions that need user approval. Flag ambiguities as questions rather than silently choosing an interpretation.
- Observe and summarize. Capture the screen, then maintain a compact state record: current application or page, completed steps, unresolved requirements, important facts gathered, and the next check. Update it when new information appears.
- Choose one bounded action. Select an action based on the current observation and task contract. Use the narrowest available mouse or keyboard operation; avoid letting the model issue a long sequence based on a screen that may already have changed.
- Execute, then observe again. The runner performs the action and returns a fresh screen. Do not assume a click registered, a page loaded, or a save completed merely because the action was sent.
- Handle uncertainty deliberately. If the visible result conflicts with the plan, recover state and reassess. If intent or a hidden fact cannot be inferred safely, ask the user rather than guessing. For a delayed or dynamic page, wait for evidence of the expected transition before continuing.
- Verify the final state. Compare the resulting application state or artifact with every success condition in the original task contract. Report what is confirmed and what remains uncertain.
This design follows the failure patterns identified by the OSWorld 2.0 authors; it is an engineering approach, not a claim that any named product implements every step.
Choose where the model runs and where actions execute
“Local” can refer to different parts of the stack. UI-TARS Desktop documentation describes local computer operation while also asking users to configure a model provider or endpoint; therefore, local control of the desktop does not by itself mean inference happens on that machine. Decide and document these separately:

- Inference location: Whether screenshots and prompts are sent to a hosted model endpoint or processed by a model running on the same machine.
- Action location: Whether input is sent to the user’s desktop, an isolated virtual machine, or another computer.
- Data path: Which screenshots, user instructions, outputs, and logs cross the machine boundary, and how they are retained.
- Operating permissions: Which applications and actions the runner can access, and which actions require explicit user approval.
For UI-TARS Desktop specifically, its quick-start documentation says browser operator mode requires a supported browser, describes the current setup as single-monitor, and warns that multi-monitor configurations may fail on some tasks. It also says macOS setup requires Accessibility and Screen Recording permissions. Consult the current setup documentation before relying on those details, since product instructions can change.

Anthropic’s privacy guidance says Claude Computer Use processes and collects screenshots along with user inputs and outputs. A screenshot can expose more than the target application: it may show messages, account details, or other visible information. Before enabling computer use, limit the agent to an appropriate environment, avoid exposing unrelated sensitive content, and review the applicable data-handling terms for the deployment you intend to use.

Make consequential actions safer
Screen content is input to the agent, not automatically a trustworthy instruction. A page or document may contain text that conflicts with the user’s request. Keep the user’s task contract authoritative, and do not let on-screen text silently expand the agent’s permissions or goals.
- Require confirmation before irreversible or externally consequential actions, such as sending, purchasing, deleting, or publishing.
- Use an isolated account or environment when practical, with only the access needed for the task.
- After a consequential action, verify the resulting state rather than relying on the agent’s narration.
- Keep logs useful for troubleshooting without collecting more screen content than the task requires.
- Provide a clear stop and handoff path when the agent encounters an unexpected prompt, uncertain state, or request for approval.
Evaluate results without mixing benchmark scores
Do not treat percentages from different OSWorld versions, task sets, or step limits as a clean head-to-head ranking. The UI-TARS paper’s 24.6-at-50-steps and 22.7-at-15-steps results use its own evaluation setup; the OSWorld 2.0 paper’s 20.6% full-completion figure is for Claude Opus 4.8 with maximum thinking and batched tool calls at a 500-step cap. They are different evaluation contexts.
For an internal test or a reproducible benchmark run, record the elements that determine what the score means:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Benchmark release, exact task subset, task assets, and environment or provider image.
- Model snapshot and configuration, including prompting and any batching.
- Runner and tool implementation, observation cadence, and action or step budget.
- Completion definition, plus both binary completion and partial-progress results where available.
The OSWorld-V2 repository recommends osworld-v2.1 and emphasizes aligning code, task files and assets, website deployment, and provider images to a coherent release. Use the repository’s release-aligned components rather than assuming a moving development branch or an older benchmark snapshot is equivalent. OSWorld-V2 repository.
What to expect from a first build
A useful first desktop agent should have a small action surface, a visible record of pending requirements, and checks at meaningful transitions—not merely a prompt that tells a model to “use the computer.” Test it on repeatable tasks with known end states, then inspect where it loses state, acts on stale observations, or fails to verify results. The benchmark evidence shows why long workflows should be treated as an engineering challenge in planning and recovery, not just a test of clicking accuracy.
