Desktop AI agents work by observing an app, interpreting what the user wants, proposing an action, and receiving a new observation after the application executes it. In practice, the model does not simply “see” a computer and take control: the application running the agent supplies the environment, translates or executes actions, and manages the feedback loop. That distinction matters for reliability, privacy, and choosing the right kind of automation.
What a desktop AI agent does
A desktop agent is a system that uses an AI model to carry out tasks through an application’s interface. Depending on the integration, it may inspect screenshots, use structured mouse and keyboard actions, or generate code that operates an application-managed browser or desktop environment. The exact arrangement differs by product and implementation; there is no single universal architecture.

The useful mental model has three parts:
- Observation: The system receives information about the current interface. In a visual workflow, this may be a screenshot; other workflows may provide structured information or code-accessible interfaces.
- Agent decision: The model interprets the instruction and current state, then proposes an action, such as clicking, typing, scrolling, or running code.
- Execution and feedback: Application code translates or executes the action in the target environment, captures the result, and provides a fresh observation so the agent can decide what to do next.
This separation is important: a model’s proposed action is not itself proof that anything happened. The application-side runtime performs the action and returns evidence of the resulting state. OpenAI’s integration guidance describes both code execution and structured mouse-and-keyboard actions; its examples place the execution service in the application, rather than with the model provider. Anthropic’s documentation also describes an application-managed loop that can return screenshots or command output. Vendor capabilities, limits, and availability can change, so these descriptions should be read as implementation patterns, not permanent guarantees.

How an agent reads a screen and chooses a target
Recognizing that a screen contains a button is only part of the task. The system must connect the user’s words to the correct interface element or location. This is often called GUI grounding: translating an instruction such as “click Submit” into a target the runtime can act on.

For screenshot-based interaction, the model must interpret the image and identify where the target appears. The runtime may then need a coordinate or other action representation it can execute. Small visual changes, ambiguous labels, dense layouts, or a screen that has changed since the observation can all make the target harder to identify. A plausible-looking click is not a reliable signal that the right control was selected.
Microsoft Research reports benchmark results that illustrate this limitation, but they are not general success rates for ordinary desktop work. Its article reports 65% success for grounding models in the context it describes. It separately reports Phi-Ground results of 55% accuracy on ScreenSpot-Pro and 36.2% on UI-Vision. Those figures refer to the named evaluations and should not be read as the probability that any deployed agent will finish a task correctly. The article also reports that, in its experiments, benefits associated with image-token detail plateaued at approximately 2,000 image tokens. That finding belongs to those experiments; it is not a universal setting for every model or screen.
Why interaction is a loop, not a single click
A computer-use task usually requires multiple decisions. After an action executes, the page or application may load new content, open a dialog, change focus, display an error, or remain unchanged. A new observation lets the agent check what happened before it continues.

- Capture the current state. The integration supplies a screenshot or another supported observation of the active environment.
- Interpret the instruction and state. The agent decides what target or next step is relevant. The runtime may constrain which action forms are available.
- Submit an action. Depending on the integration, the agent may return structured input such as a click or keystroke, or code for the application-managed environment to execute.
- Execute and observe again. The application runs the action and returns a fresh screenshot, output, or other observation.
- Continue, correct, or stop. The agent uses the new state to choose another step, recover from a mismatch, or determine that the task is complete.
Without that feedback, an agent can keep acting on an assumption that has become false. A click might not register, a page might take time to load, or a control might move. The loop is therefore not just an implementation detail: it is how the system checks whether its actions changed the application as expected.
What the application integration is responsible for
The model and the environment are separate pieces. The application integrating an agent is responsible for important operational work: providing access to the target environment, translating and executing actions, returning results, and preserving a live session when the workflow needs it. OpenAI’s guidance specifically notes that API conversation state and execution-environment state are separate. An integration that needs to continue using an open browser or desktop session must preserve that environment’s state as needed; a continued model conversation alone does not imply that the app session remains available.
Image handling also affects whether actions line up with the screen. Anthropic’s guidance notes that when an integration resizes screenshots, it must map action coordinates back to the original screen space and respect model-specific image limits. If a displayed image has been scaled but coordinates are treated as though it were still at its original dimensions, an otherwise sensible target can land in the wrong place. The relevant limits and mapping depend on the integration and model; they should be checked rather than assumed.

For a reader assessing a particular implementation, the practical questions are who hosts and executes actions, what state persists between steps, how screenshots are transformed, and what the runtime does when an action fails. Documentation that says an agent can click or type does not by itself establish how consistently it will work in a particular app.

Screen-based computer use is useful when the task requires interacting with a visible desktop interface, including situations where a direct API is unavailable. It is not automatically the best way to automate every task. Microsoft Foundry distinguishes desktop computer use from browser automation: it recommends computer use when interaction goes beyond the browser or DOM parsing is unavailable, and browser automation for web-only interactions.
| Approach | What the agent or integration works with | When the cited guidance points to it | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen-based computer use | A desktop or application interface represented through visual observations and actions such as clicking, typing, or scrolling. | When work extends beyond the browser, or when a direct API or DOM-based route is unavailable for the task. | Target selection and action coordinates depend on the observed interface and correct image handling. |
| Browser automation | A web interaction through browser-focused automation rather than general desktop control. | Microsoft Foundry recommends it for web-only interactions. | Its suitability depends on the task and the browser automation interface available to the integration. |
| Code execution or structured actions | Code run in an application-managed environment, or structured mouse and keyboard actions that application code translates. | OpenAI’s guidance describes both as integration patterns. | The application owns the execution service in the documented examples and must handle execution and any needed session state. |
| Direct application interface | An API or other programmatic interface, where the application provides one. | A potential alternative to operating the visible interface; the cited sources do not establish a universal rule for when it is superior. | Compare the actual interface available for the task; the reviewed sources do not provide a broad head-to-head ranking. |
These are practical distinctions, not evidence that one method is always faster, more accurate, or more robust. There is no broad comparative trial in the cited material that ranks screenshots, accessibility structures, DOM information, and APIs across all desktop apps. The right choice depends on the target’s scope, the structured interfaces it exposes, the runtime’s responsibilities, image handling, and the safeguards around actions.

How to assess a desktop-agent integration
Before relying on an agent for a workflow, assess the conditions that shape its behavior and what happens when it is uncertain or wrong. Treat a vendor’s description of possible actions as a capability statement, not independent proof of reliability for every application.
- Scope: Is the task confined to a browser, or does it involve the broader desktop?
- Available structure: Can the integration use a direct API, browser structure, or another programmatic interface, or must it interpret a visual screen?
- Runtime ownership: Which component executes actions, returns results, and keeps the working session alive?
- Image and coordinate handling: Are screenshots resized? If so, how are action coordinates mapped back? What image limits apply to the model?
- Feedback and failure handling: Does the integration observe the result after each action, and can it detect when a click or other action did not produce the expected state?
- Permissions and destinations: What data and applications can the account reach, and which sites or actions are allowed?
- Accessibility: How does the agent communicate its actions and results, and are both the agent layer and its communication designed accessibly?
The 2025 review by Pascal J. Sager and coauthors offers a way to place these questions in the wider field: it organizes computer-use agents around environments, interaction—including observation and action spaces—and agent behavior. It reports reviewing and classifying 86 computer-use agents and 33 related datasets. Those are counts from that review, not a count of currently available commercial products.

Giving an agent control of an interface creates risks beyond selecting the wrong button. Microsoft Foundry warns that computer use has security and privacy risks, including prompt-injection attacks. A screen or page can contain instructions that should not be treated as trusted directions for the agent. Access to a desktop may also expose information or actions beyond the immediate task, depending on the account and environment.
Best Value
Microsoft recommends testing in a sandbox or virtual machine without sensitive data. For a deployed workflow, Microsoft Copilot Studio guidance recommends limiting the computer-use account to the permissions it needs and restricting web access to trusted sites. Its guidance also cautions that an allow list can restrict interaction without necessarily preventing navigation to an unlisted site. An allow list should therefore not be described as a guarantee that the agent cannot reach every destination outside it.
- Use a separate test environment without sensitive information while evaluating an integration.
- Give the computer-use account only the permissions required for the task.
- Set destination controls appropriate to the workflow, and verify precisely what those controls block.
- Keep validation in the application code that executes actions; a model’s intended action is not a substitute for runtime checks.
- Review which observations, screenshots, and outputs the integration returns and retains, using the product’s current documentation for details.
Accessibility is part of agent design
AI agents may remove barriers for people with disabilities, but their own interfaces and communications can introduce new ones. Microsoft agent-design guidance calls for accessibility practices in both the visual agent layer and its communication. That means accessibility is not only a question of whether an agent can operate an app; it also includes whether people can understand, control, and receive useful information from the agent itself.
The cited material does not establish a general technical comparison between accessibility-tree-based agents and screenshot-based agents. It would therefore be premature to claim that one approach is universally more accessible. The relevant design question is how a specific agent and app work together, and whether the whole interaction—including status, errors, and handoff—is accessible to the people using it.
What reliability figures do—and do not—tell you
Benchmark scores help describe performance on defined evaluations, not the odds of success on an unspecified real-world task. The Microsoft Research figures above apply to named grounding evaluations and the study’s stated context. A real task can differ in screen layout, language, image presentation, target ambiguity, and the cost of an error. A benchmark result should not replace testing the exact workflow, environment, and permissions that matter to a reader.
More generally, a strong implementation needs both a capable agent and a runtime that can execute actions safely and report the resulting state. The agent’s perception can be wrong; the execution environment can also have stale state, coordinate-mapping errors, or other integration problems. Observing after actions, constraining access, and checking outcomes address different parts of that chain rather than guaranteeing that every task will succeed.
