How DeFi Swap Aggregators Find Routes—and What Traders Should Compare

DeFi swap aggregators search supported liquidity sources, but the best route depends on trade conditions. Compare net output, minimum received, fees and execution method.

DeFi swap aggregators search the liquidity sources they support and choose a route for a token trade—sometimes splitting it across sources. That can improve a trader’s access to available routes, but it does not guarantee the best final price. To compare options, hold the pair, network, amount and timing constant, then examine output after costs, minimum output, slippage limits, fees and how the trade will execute.

What a DeFi swap aggregator does

A DEX aggregator looks across supported exchanges, pools or other liquidity sources to find a route for swapping one token for another. Depending on the trade and the aggregator’s integrations, a route may use one source or split the order among several.

The result depends on what the aggregator can consider: its supported networks and tokens, its connected liquidity sources, the information used to produce the quote, and the routing preference. An aggregator cannot route through a venue or protocol it does not support. 1inch describes its Pathfinder as finding routes across integrated liquidity sources, while its developer pages distinguish aggregation protocols from intent-based protocols (1inch Aggregation Protocol; 1inch developer overview).

This article is about swap or DEX aggregators, not yield aggregators, which allocate deposited assets among investment strategies.

How an aggregator chooses a route

It searches eligible liquidity sources

The aggregator evaluates routes available through its integrations for the requested pair and trade size. A route can pass through one or more pools, and an order can be split among sources. The set of routes is bounded by the protocols the service or its API has been configured to consider.

For example, Uniswap’s swapping API documents protocol-selection options including V2, V3, V4, UniswapX V2 and UniswapX V3. It also documents BEST_PRICE and FASTEST routing preferences. These are controls for that API, not universal settings offered by every aggregator (Uniswap API routing documentation).

It applies a routing preference

“Best price” and “fastest” describe different matching priorities, not guaranteed outcomes. In Uniswap’s API, BEST_PRICE seeks the best route among eligible protocols; FASTEST returns the first route found to complete the swap. The API documentation describes routingPreference as the preferred matching strategy. A route found first may not have the same estimated output as the route selected by a best-price search, and either estimate can change before execution.

Use a price-oriented preference when estimated output matters most and you can tolerate the search and execution conditions it entails. A speed-oriented preference may make sense when time is more important than comparing every eligible route. Which is preferable depends on the live trade and your priorities; neither label promises a better realized result.

How to compare quotes for the same trade

Compare quotes under the same conditions: use the same token pair, network, trade amount and time. Otherwise, differences in market conditions or trade size can make the comparison misleading.

  1. Compare estimated output. Look at the amount you are expected to receive after disclosed costs, rather than relying on a headline exchange rate alone.
  2. Check minimum output or the order’s price bounds. The minimum is the lower output limit represented for a swap; if execution cannot meet the applicable bound, the trade may not complete as quoted. In an intent or auction order, check the bounds set for that order.
  3. Review slippage settings. Slippage tolerance defines how much the execution can differ from the quoted result within the transaction’s limits. A more permissive setting may allow a worse output; a tighter limit can make a trade more likely to fail if conditions move before it executes. Check the resulting minimum output, not just the tolerance percentage.
  4. Account for all costs. Compare estimated network gas and any disclosed interface, infrastructure or execution fees. A quote with more tokens out before costs may not be the better net outcome once costs are included.
  5. Inspect the route and eligible sources. Check which protocols or liquidity sources the quote can use, and whether the aggregator’s configured scope is broad enough for the comparison you want to make.
  6. Understand the execution path. Determine whether you are signing a transaction that executes through pools or placing an order that awaits a resolver or filler. For an order, check its expiry, partial-fill behavior and what happens if it does not fill.
  7. Read the wallet confirmation. Check the minimum output, token approval details and transaction data before signing. A displayed quote is not a substitute for reviewing what the wallet asks you to authorize.

Uniswap’s quote API includes fields such as minimum output, slippage tolerance, routing, gas estimate, approval applicability and swap transaction data, illustrating the kinds of details worth comparing (Uniswap quote API).

Direct pool routes and intent or auction orders

These execution models can both seek competitive swaps, but they work differently. In a conventional routed swap, the aggregator chooses a path through configured liquidity venues and produces transaction data. With an intent or auction model, the user specifies an order and eligible parties may compete to fill it. The distinction affects how a trade is submitted and what to watch for—not whether a particular trade is guaranteed to succeed.

Execution model How it works What to check
Direct or routed pool transaction The aggregator selects a route through eligible pools or other configured venues and returns a transaction path. Uniswap’s API offers BEST_PRICE and FASTEST as routing preferences for this process. Estimated and minimum output, gas, slippage limits, route sources and the transaction details shown in the wallet.
Intent or auction order The user specifies desired amounts or bounds; resolvers or fillers may compete to execute the order. UniswapX describes Dutch auctions as a way to create a competitive marketplace among fillers and draw on on-chain and off-chain liquidity. Order bounds, expiry, partial-fill rules, fees, and what happens if no eligible party fills the order.

What auction execution changes

In its Fusion documentation, 1inch describes approved resolvers competing to fill an order through a Dutch auction. The user sets desired amounts and slippage bounds; an order may fill, fall outside the user’s tolerance, or expire. The documentation also describes partial fills and says resolvers cover associated gas for Fusion orders; under the described mechanism, failed or expired orders can be resubmitted without gas. These details are specific to 1inch Fusion and may change, so check the current terms for the exact mode you use (1inch Fusion explainer, May 5, 2026).

Uniswap’s whitepaper describes UniswapX as a non-custodial, permissionless protocol that uses Dutch auctions to create competition among fillers and draw on on-chain and off-chain liquidity (UniswapX whitepaper). That protocol description does not establish that every order will fill or outperform a pool route.

Fees, slippage and execution uncertainty

Fees depend on the mode

Do not assume an aggregator swap is free because one interface or execution path does not show a gas charge to the user. A March 5, 2026 1inch help article says fee treatment depends on trading mode: it distinguishes Pro interface network gas from Swap interface resolver-filled orders and notes exceptions, including Solana or native-token swaps and very small swaps routed through the DEX aggregator. It also says positive-slippage surplus handling is at the API-provider level and that certain swaps may include infrastructure fees. Check the current fee disclosure for the exact interface, network and execution mode rather than applying one fee description to every trade (1inch fee help article).

A quote is an estimate, not a guarantee

Prices and available liquidity can change between the quote and execution. Routing preferences do not remove slippage, and an order sent to fillers can remain unfilled or expire. Gas sponsorship, resolver competition and any stated price bounds apply only as described for the particular mode; they do not ensure a better net result for every trade.

What aggregation does not protect you from

Aggregation is a way to search routes and access supported liquidity, not a guarantee that a token, quote, order, contract or transaction is safe. An aggregator’s coverage can change, and its route search is limited to supported networks, tokens and integrations. A favorable displayed rate also does not settle whether the minimum output, fees and execution conditions are acceptable to you.

  • Confirm that the token and network are the ones you intend to trade.
  • Review approvals and transaction data in your wallet before signing.
  • Check minimum output or order bounds alongside the quote.
  • Use the current fee disclosure for the selected execution mode.
  • Do not treat a routing label or auction mechanism as a promise of a fill or a better price.
