AI agents can review and challenge one another’s answers, but agreement is not proof of correctness. A multi-agent Q&A system is most useful when it checks disputed claims against relevant external evidence, keeps disagreements visible, and uses an evaluator designed for the actual question. Without those safeguards, it may simply produce several versions of the same mistake.
What does it mean for AI agents to verify an answer?
In a multi-agent Q&A design, one agent drafts an answer while other agents critique it, offer alternatives, or search for evidence. A separate judge—or a person—then assesses the responses. The key distinction is between review and verification: critique can expose weaknesses, but verification requires checking claims against evidence and appropriate criteria.

OpenAI introduced debate as a proposed AI-safety technique in 2018, describing agents arguing while a human judges the exchange. The proposal was an approach under investigation, not a general-purpose guarantee that debate produces truth. Its authors cautioned that debate might not reach optimal play or correct statements and would require more computation than direct answering. OpenAI’s explanation of AI safety via debate discusses both the idea and its limitations.

It can help in particular settings, but the evidence does not support a blanket claim that more agents always improve accuracy. Results depend on the task, the evidence available, the agents’ independence, and how their work is judged.

What the early debate demonstration shows
In a constrained MNIST experiment reported by OpenAI in 2018, a sparse classifier achieved 59.4% accuracy on the MNIST test set, while debate achieved 88.9%. Those figures describe that specific experiment; they are not an estimate of the accuracy or improvement of general-purpose Q&A platforms.
Why distinct evidence tools can matter
The 2026 Tool-MAD preprint describes a more evidence-oriented approach: agents use distinct tools, such as search APIs or retrieval-augmented generation, and adapt their searches as debate proceeds. Its authors report an improvement of up to 5.5% over the debate frameworks they evaluated. That is a paper-specific benchmark result, not a universal uplift for multi-agent systems. The work also considers faithfulness and answer relevance as signals for the judge. Read the Tool-MAD preprint.

The practical implication is that agent diversity matters most when it changes what can be checked. If every agent relies on the same incomplete context or repeats the same unsupported assumption, their agreement adds little. Independent sources and traceable evidence give a reviewer something substantive to assess.

Agents can share the same error
Multiple agents may reproduce a false premise, especially when they share a model, source material, or prompt assumptions. A confident consensus can therefore be wrong. A system should not treat the number of agents supporting a claim as a substitute for evidence.

A persuasive argument can beat a correct one
A judge that chooses the most fluent or forceful response may reward presentation rather than accuracy. OpenAI noted that debate has no theoretical guarantee of correct outcomes and that judges may have limitations or bias. Debate also consumes more computation than direct answering; systems that add rounds and repeated inference face additional cost and latency.
A verifier can grade the wrong thing
In work on computer-use agents—not Q&A systems—Microsoft Research identifies “phantom criteria”: requirements introduced by a generated rubric that were not part of the user’s task. Its verifier study reports 96 experiments and says rubric design accounted for roughly half of the total Cohen’s κ gains. This is a design analogy rather than direct evidence about Q&A, but it illustrates a general risk: a verifier can be consistent while evaluating the wrong requirements. Microsoft Research’s discussion of building verifiers for computer-use agents describes the problem.

How to assess a multi-agent Q&A platform
Rather than counting agents or debate rounds, inspect how the system handles evidence, disagreement, evaluation, and operating cost. This is a practical checklist, not a standardized scorecard.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Evidence access: Can agents consult distinct, relevant sources, or are they all limited to the same supplied text?
- Traceability: Can a reader follow each important claim to the evidence supporting it?
- Independent review: Do agents form answers independently before seeing one another’s arguments, or can early opinions anchor the whole exchange?
- Visible dissent: Does the system preserve unresolved objections and uncertainty, or collapse them into a single confident-sounding answer?
- Adjudication: Does the judge test claims against evidence and task requirements, rather than simply select the most persuasive response?
- Evaluation fit: Are benchmarks and rubrics matched to the intended question type, with human-reviewed cases used to test whether the verifier scores answers appropriately?
- Cost and speed: What extra response time and inference cost come from additional agents, retrieval calls, and debate rounds?
A product called Multi Agent Debates by Delibora describes structured formats for research, expert panels, and decision stress-testing. Those are vendor-described use cases, not independent validation of the product’s accuracy. Its FAQ also says outcomes depend on the models, format, and problem. Delibora’s product site is an example of how the category is presented commercially.
What would make a Q&A answer meaningfully checked?
A robust workflow should distinguish claims from conclusions. Agents can draft independently, identify specific disagreements, retrieve evidence relevant to those points, and submit the result to a judge that applies explicit task criteria. The system should retain sources and dissent so a reader can see what was checked and where uncertainty remains.
- Define the task: State what a correct answer must address, including relevant limits such as date, jurisdiction, or scope.
- Gather independent answers: Have agents work from the question before exposing them to a shared consensus.
- Isolate disputed claims: Ask critics to point to specific unsupported, contradictory, or missing claims rather than merely rewrite the answer.
- Check evidence: Retrieve sources relevant to those disputes and preserve the connection between each source and the claim it supports.
- Adjudicate against the task: Use criteria that reflect what the user asked, not extra requirements invented by a rubric.
- Report uncertainty: Keep unresolved disagreement visible and avoid presenting consensus as proof.
The title “I built a Q&A platform where AI agents verify each other’s answers” does not identify the builder or platform. No specific implementation, model lineup, measured performance, pricing, or user experience can therefore be attributed to that platform from the title alone.
