Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Deepfakes can target a biometric check, but they can also bypass the check by entering through a compromised capture path, account recovery, or support process. That distinction matters: improving the login factor alone will not secure every route back into an account.
There is no established rate showing how often deepfakes succeed across authentication systems, so “rarely” should not be read as a measured statistic. Official guidance instead identifies several attack paths and recommends layered controls.

How can deepfakes bypass authentication?
There are three different problems that are often lumped together. A deepfake may be presented directly to a biometric sensor, injected into the media or data pipeline before a decision is made, or used to persuade a person in an account-recovery or support workflow. Each route targets a different part of identity assurance.

1. Present a fake to the biometric sensor
A presentation, or spoofing, attack tries to make a sensor accept a reproduction of a real person’s biometric. Examples include holding a photograph in front of a camera or playing a recording to a voice-recognition system. A manipulated face or voice may be part of such an attempt, but the central challenge is whether the biometric system can tell a live, genuine subject from a reproduction.

2. Inject manipulated media into the capture pipeline
An injection attack does not have to fool a sensor in the ordinary way. It supplies untrusted biometric information or media—such as forged video or deepfake material—into the authentication or identity-proofing process. UK government guidance distinguishes this from presenting a reproduction to a sensor. A system can therefore have a liveness check and still need to establish that the media came through a trusted capture path.
3. Go around the login through recovery or support
If a person can regain access through a support interaction, reset flow, enrollment process, or other fallback, an attacker may target that route rather than impersonate the account holder at sign-in. Microsoft’s account-recovery guidance warns that traditional helpdesk recovery is vulnerable to social engineering. Recovery after a complete lockout is a trust decision: access should not be restored merely because someone can convincingly imitate the account holder.

Why a deepfake can matter even when the login factor is strong
Authentication is one part of the identity boundary, not the whole boundary. Identity-proofing media, enrollment, device and sensor pathways, recovery, support escalation, and permissions after sign-in all affect what an attacker can reach. A robust login factor cannot compensate for an alternate path that grants access on weaker evidence.
Biometrics also have a particular limitation: they are not secrets. NIST notes that biometric characteristics can often be obtained without a person’s consent and supports their use only with a physical authenticator as part of multifactor authentication. NIST also calls for a non-biometric alternative. A face or voice match should therefore not be treated as a standalone substitute for a separate possession-based factor.

What defenses address each route?
No single control covers presentation, injection, recovery fraud, and excessive access after login. The table separates the purpose of common controls and the gap each one leaves.
| Control | What it helps protect | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Liveness and spoof detection | Whether a biometric presented for capture appears to come from a live subject rather than a simple reproduction. | That media was not injected elsewhere in the pipeline, or that recovery and support processes are secure. |
| Capture integrity, sensor trust, and protected data channels | Whether identity-proofing media and biometric data came through a trusted sensor or device path and remained protected in transit. | That every manipulated input will be detected, or that a support agent will make a sound recovery decision. |
| Media-manipulation analysis and human review | Whether submitted media may have been altered; manual review can add scrutiny to automated decisions. | A guarantee of correct decisions. Review procedures still need to account for false acceptance and false rejection. |
| Multifactor authentication with a physical authenticator | Sign-in assurance beyond a biometric characteristic or other factor that can be imitated or obtained. | Protection from a compromised recovery route, malware, or excessive permissions after access is granted. |
| Recovery controls and least-privilege access | Whether a fallback process restores trust safely, and how much a compromised account can reach. | Prevention of every impersonation attempt at initial sign-in. |
NIST’s identity-proofing guidance recognizes that deepfakes can undermine document validation, biometric operations, and visual review by proofing agents. It recommends analyzing submitted media for manipulation, protecting data channels, considering sensor authentication or device attestation, and augmenting automated decisions with manual review. The strength and applicability of a recommendation depend on the proofing context; these measures should not be read as a claim that any one check is foolproof.

How should an organization reduce the risk?
- Map every route to access. Document sign-in, enrollment, identity proofing, password or factor reset, helpdesk escalation, and privileged-access workflows. Identify which of them can restore access or change a factor.
- Secure the capture path. For biometric or identity-proofing processes, assess liveness and spoof detection alongside sensor trust, device attestation where appropriate, protected channels, and analysis for manipulated media. Test controls against relevant performance and security standards and document their false-acceptance and false-rejection behavior.
- Keep a separate factor in the decision. NIST’s guidance is to use biometrics with a physical authenticator as part of multifactor authentication, and to make a non-biometric option available. New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) likewise advises covered entities to consider physical security keys or digital certificates rather than relying on SMS, voice, or video authentication.
- Make recovery re-establish trust. Review how agents verify identity, what evidence is accepted, and whether an attacker could use a more permissive fallback than the normal login. Avoid turning a convincing voice or video interaction into sufficient proof on its own.
- Limit the consequences of a bypass. Apply least privilege, restrict access to sensitive information, and periodically review elevated access. New York DFS recommends these access controls for covered entities in the context of limiting exposure if multifactor authentication fails.
The DFS recommendations are guidance for covered entities, not a universal legal mandate. In its October 16, 2024 industry letter, DFS said covered entities should consider avoiding authentication via SMS text, voice, or video and using factors such as digital-based certificates and physical security keys that AI deepfakes cannot impersonate.

What should users look for?
- Prefer sign-in options that combine factors rather than relying on face or voice matching alone.
- Secure recovery settings and treat unexpected requests to reset a factor or verify identity through a call or video as a separate risk from the login itself.
- For work accounts, follow the organization’s approved recovery process; do not bypass it because a caller or video appears familiar.
- If a service offers a non-biometric sign-in option, keep it available so access does not depend entirely on a biometric match.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
Government and standards guidance establishes that presentation attacks, injected media, manipulated proofing inputs, and social engineering of recovery are recognized risks. It also identifies controls that can reduce exposure. It does not establish a general success rate for deepfake attacks against authentication, nor does it show that deepfakes commonly defeat every system. Results depend on the system’s capture design, checks, fallback paths, and access controls.
