Deep-sea research vehicles collect images and samples by carrying cameras, lights, sensors and specialized tools to the seafloor, while a shipboard team pilots them through a tether and monitors live data. NOAA’s remotely operated vehicles Deep Discoverer and Seirios are rated to reach 6,000 meters (about 3.7 miles); their equipment lets scientists document a site, collect selected organisms or rocks, and take water samples without sending divers into the deep ocean.

What kind of vehicle explores the deep sea?

A remotely operated vehicle, or ROV, is a tethered underwater work platform. It descends from a support ship, and pilots aboard the ship control its movement and tools while observing camera feeds and vehicle information. The tether links the vehicle to the ship and supports the coordinated operation of the system.

ROVs are not simply cameras on cables. A scientific vehicle can carry imaging equipment, lighting, navigation aids, environmental sensors and sampling devices. NOAA’s Deep Discoverer overview describes Deep Discoverer and Seirios as capable of reaching 6,000 meters. That figure applies to those named vehicles, not to every ROV.

A deep-sea dive is a ship-based operation: the vehicle is deployed from the vessel, piloted by a team on board, and recovered after the work is complete. The people controlling it rely on multiple information streams, not just a view through the cameras. This arrangement gives researchers a way to inspect and work at depths far beyond where divers can go, while keeping the pilots and much of the mission equipment on the ship.

How do ROVs see and record a site?

Lights reveal what the cameras can capture

Sunlight does not reach the deep seafloor, so an ROV must bring its own illumination. Deep Discoverer carries high-definition video cameras and LED lamps. Its lights illuminate a limited area in front of the vehicle; cameras record the scene within that lit field. Depending on the equipment and mission, imagery may include video and still images.

For many locations, ROV footage provides the first visual record collected there. NOAA notes that images can be annotated with latitude and longitude, giving researchers a way to connect an observation to its location rather than treating it as an unplaced picture. This helps document organisms, geological features and the context around them.

That location information matters when a team reviews the dive later: researchers can tie an image or observation to a point on the seafloor and compare it with other records. A video also preserves surrounding context that a close-up sample alone cannot show. Lighting and camera range remain limits, however; the recorded view is not a survey of everything beyond the illuminated area.

Sonar and navigation complement the visual record

A camera shows only what is illuminated and within its view. Sonar and navigation information help pilots interpret the vehicle’s surroundings and manage its position relative to the seafloor. Deep Discoverer’s listed equipment includes sonar and navigation systems, alongside a CTD system that measures conductivity, temperature and depth.

These information streams serve different purposes: video records visible detail, sonar and navigation support orientation and movement, and environmental sensors characterize conditions. The control room combines them so pilots can operate the ROV and document where observations are made.

On research vehicles, measurements can add environmental context to the imagery. Depending on the sensor package, an ROV may measure conditions such as salinity, temperature, depth and dissolved oxygen. Such readings do not replace images or samples: they describe conditions around the vehicle, while the camera documents visible features and a collected specimen can be examined directly.

How does the shipboard team operate the vehicle?

The ROV is piloted from a shipboard control room, where the team can monitor live camera feeds, sonar, navigation data and vehicle diagnostics. Pilots use those views and readings to maneuver, inspect features and decide whether a sample can be collected safely and usefully. The operation depends on coordinated piloting and functioning vehicle systems, not just on the cameras.

During a dive, the control room is where visual observations and vehicle status are considered together. A pilot can use the camera view to approach a feature, while navigation and sonar information help with positioning. The team can then decide whether to continue documenting the feature, use a sampling tool, or move on. The system’s diagnostics matter because the vehicle must remain functional for its lights, manipulators and other tools to be useful.

Hydraulic systems power important equipment, including the manipulator arms and adjustable lights. In a 2026 NOAA shakedown account, a hydraulic-control problem could prevent pilots from manipulating objects, collecting samples or adjusting lights. That example illustrates a possible operational dependency; it does not mean every mission experiences such a fault.

How are biological and geological samples collected?

Arms and boxes collect objects

When pilots identify a rock or an organism suitable for collection, they can maneuver the vehicle’s manipulator arms to handle it and place it in a sample box. The arms allow precise work from a distance, while boxes keep recovered material organized for retrieval. Deep Discoverer has two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms, as listed in NOAA’s vehicle factsheet.

Collection is selective: the team chooses material relevant to the mission and can only recover what the vehicle’s tools and available capacity permit. NOAA describes collected specimens as providing a general representation of biological and geological information from an explored location, not a complete inventory of everything living or present there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, the pilots first have to identify something useful within reach, maneuver the vehicle and arm into position, then place the item in the appropriate container. The recovered material is only one part of the record: video can document the specimen in place and show the terrain around it before it is removed. Since sample boxes and vehicle capacity are finite, the team cannot collect every object it encounters.

Suction can collect delicate material

Some organisms are too delicate or awkward to pick up with an arm. A rotary suction sampler can draw such material into a collection jar. Deep Discoverer’s listed configuration has a rotary suction sampler with five 2.7-liter jars. The particular tool and its capacity are features of this vehicle configuration, not standard specifications for all deep-sea ROVs.

Different tools suit different collection tasks. An arm can grasp and transfer an object into a box, while suction offers another way to collect delicate material. Neither tool guarantees that every organism can be recovered: the decision depends on the target, the vehicle’s equipment and the conditions of the dive.

How are seawater samples collected?

To collect water from a particular depth, a team can trigger a Niskin bottle mounted on the vehicle. Deep Discoverer’s factsheet lists five individually triggered bottles, each with a capacity of 1.7 liters. Triggering them at selected depths makes it possible to collect water from different parts of the water column rather than only from the surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 2023 NOAA expedition provides an example of what happens next: water collected at different depths with vehicle-mounted Niskin bottles was processed aboard ship by filtration for later environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis. eDNA analysis can help researchers look for genetic traces in the collected water. That documented workflow is one expedition’s method; sample handling depends on the scientific question and the type of material collected.

This example also shows that a sampling mission does not end when a bottle closes. The collected water must be recovered with the vehicle, brought back to the ship and handled in a way suited to the research. In the NOAA account, staff filtered it aboard ship and kept the resulting material for later analysis. That is a documented approach for that expedition, not a universal procedure for every water sample.

What equipment does NOAA’s Deep Discoverer carry?

The following details come from NOAA’s Deep Discoverer/Seirios factsheet, labeled January 2025. They describe Deep Discoverer’s listed configuration and should not be read as universal ROV specifications.

Function Deep Discoverer equipment
Imaging and illumination High-definition video cameras and LED lamps
Object handling Two seven-function hydraulic manipulator arms
Biological and geological samples Bio boxes and rock boxes; capacity for up to 11 biological/geological samples per dive
Delicate biological material Rotary suction sampler with five 2.7-liter jars
Water samples Five individually triggered 1.7-liter Niskin bottles; capacity for up to five water samples per dive
Environmental measurement and orientation Standard CTD system and sonar

The stated sample totals are maximum capacities listed for Deep Discoverer, not a promise that every dive collects that number. Actual collection depends on the mission, the available tools and what the team encounters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These specifications provide several useful comparison points for named scientific vehicles: maximum operating depth, imaging and lighting, sample-handling tools and capacity, and sensor or navigation equipment. NOAA lists both Deep Discoverer and Seirios at 6,000 meters, while the detailed equipment and capacity figures above describe Deep Discoverer’s configuration. The figures should not be generalized to other ROVs, which may have different depth ratings, cameras, tools and payloads.

What happens after the ROV returns to the ship?

Shipboard staff recover the vehicle and remove its samples. Handling then depends on what was collected and what the investigators need to learn. In NOAA’s 2023 water-sampling example, staff filtered water aboard ship for later eDNA analysis; that does not establish a single processing method for all samples.

Biological specimens may be sent to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History for study. Researchers can examine them to assess whether they represent species new to science or clarify relationships among organisms. Geological samples, such as rocks, can help explain how a part of the seafloor formed.

Images and video also become research records. Scientists can review and annotate footage, including the locations of observations. Imagery can document discoveries even when the team does not or cannot recover a physical specimen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The record therefore has several parts: images of what the team saw, sensor and navigation information that helps establish conditions and location, and any physical material brought back. The material and its subsequent treatment depend on the research question. A rock, an organism and a bottle of seawater do not all require the same handling or answer the same kind of question.

Why collect both images and physical samples?

Images preserve visible detail and the context of an observation across a site. They can show where an organism was found and how it related to surrounding terrain. A physical sample allows closer examination, including analyses that cannot be performed from video alone. Water samples can also be processed for questions such as the eDNA work documented by NOAA.

The two forms of evidence are complementary, but neither makes the other exhaustive. Cameras record only what comes into view under the vehicle’s lighting, while collection is constrained by the tools, capacity and choices made during the dive. Together, visual records, sensor readings and selected samples let researchers describe a place more fully than any one of those methods could by itself.

Images may be the only record of a feature if no specimen is collected. Conversely, a specimen provides material that can be studied directly after recovery, but it does not by itself show the full setting in which it was found. The combination helps scientists connect an observation to both its surroundings and material evidence.

What limits what an ROV can collect?

  • Depth and vehicle design: Maximum operating depth and payload vary by vehicle. The 6,000-meter capability cited here is for Deep Discoverer and Seirios.
  • Limited field of view: Cameras show the area they can illuminate and capture, not the entire surrounding seafloor.
  • Selective collection: A pilot must choose targets and operate tools within reach; sample capacity is finite.
  • Equipment dependencies: A problem with a system such as hydraulic control can restrict the use of arms, lights or sampling tools.
  • Different scientific questions: A specimen’s handling and analysis depend on its type and the purpose of the mission.

Payload is another practical constraint. Deep Discoverer’s listed maximum of up to 11 biological or geological samples and five water samples describes what it can carry on a dive, not how many a team must collect. The actual set of samples depends on what the mission is designed to investigate and what the pilots encounter. The distinction is important: a dive’s images may document many observations, while only a subset can be physically recovered.

Equipment comparisons are most useful when they focus on those capabilities—depth, imaging and illumination, sampling payload, and sensors or navigation—rather than treating specialized ship-based research vehicles as consumer products. These are expedition systems whose equipment is selected for scientific operations, not interchangeable cameras or hobby vehicles.

How does an ROV collect water for eDNA analysis?

A vehicle-mounted Niskin bottle can be triggered at a selected depth. In a NOAA 2023 expedition, collected water was filtered aboard ship for later environmental DNA analysis. Procedures depend on the expedition and research question.

Does an ROV collect every organism or rock it sees?

No. Collection is selective and limited by the tools, reach and carrying capacity of the vehicle, as well as the mission’s purpose. Images can document observations even when no physical specimen is collected.

The Bottom Line

Deep-sea ROVs combine lights, cameras, sensors and sampling tools with shipboard piloting. Images show and locate observations; selected specimens and water samples give researchers material to examine. The exact depth, equipment and capacity depend on the vehicle—NOAA lists Deep Discoverer and Seirios at 6,000 meters, and Deep Discoverer’s sample limits are specific to its configuration.
