A CVE identifies a vulnerability, but it does not tell you whether your Debian release is affected or which package version fixes it. To answer those questions, follow the issue through Debian’s Security Tracker, check any Debian Security Advisory (DSA), then compare the full installed Debian package version with the fixed version for your release.
How a vulnerability becomes a Debian security update
The process connects several kinds of information, each answering a different question:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- CVE: A public identifier for a vulnerability. It is a starting point, not a Debian-specific verdict.
- Debian Security Tracker: Debian’s release- and package-specific record of the issue. Entries can connect CVEs to Debian source packages, advisories, bug reports, and status notes.
- DSA: A published Debian Security Advisory for an issue warranting an advisory. It generally identifies relevant CVEs, packages, affected distributions, and fixed package versions. One DSA may cover multiple vulnerabilities in a source package.
- Fixed package: The Debian package version that includes the correction for a particular distribution. Debian may backport a fix rather than move to a newer upstream release.
Debian’s Security Tracker is the central place to connect these records. Its data comes from the Security Team’s tracker database and draws on DSAs, CVE and NVD records, and Debian bug reports. Search by CVE, DSA, bug number, or package name.

- Find the issue. Search the tracker using the CVE, DSA, or package name. If you have a scanner report, use its CVE as a lookup key rather than treating the scanner’s conclusion as Debian’s assessment.
- Select the matching release and package. Check the entry for the Debian release and source package in use. Read the status and notes, including indications such as fixed, unfixed, not affected, or no DSA. Status can vary by release.
- Find the fixed version. If a DSA applies, use the fixed version it lists for your distribution. Compare it with the installed Debian package’s complete version string—not just the upstream software version.
- Refresh APT’s package list and install updates. For all available upgrades, Debian documents
apt-get updatefollowed byapt-get upgrade. To install a particular package, useapt-get install package, replacingpackagewith its name. - Check the result if the version still looks unexpected. Review the package changelog or recheck the tracker entry. A service or process may also need restarting for the update to take effect.
When an advisory names a source package, Debian’s guidance is to update all binary packages built from that source package, not only a binary whose name resembles the affected software. See the Debian Security FAQ for the update workflow and package guidance.

Why a fixed Debian version can look old
Debian generally aims to keep stable behavior predictable by backporting security corrections to the package version line already shipped, rather than replacing it with a newer upstream release. Consequently, the upstream version visible in a package name can look old even when Debian has included the security fix.
Compare the full Debian version string against the fixed version listed for your exact release. Do not infer that a package is vulnerable simply because its upstream version is lower than a version mentioned by an upstream project or scanner. If necessary, inspect the package changelog as the Debian FAQ recommends.
Why a CVE may not have a DSA
A CVE assignment does not guarantee that Debian systems are affected or that Debian will publish an advisory. Debian assesses vulnerabilities in the context of its packages and releases. An issue may not affect Debian, may not yet have an advisory, or may have been announced before it received a CVE identifier.

Debian may address issues it does not consider serious enough for a DSA through a later Debian release or point release, or bundle them into an advisory for a more serious issue. Tracker notes such as no-dsa explain a status; read the entry rather than treating the absence of a DSA as proof that the issue is either fixed or irrelevant. Debian’s FAQ puts it plainly: “The fact that something is assigned a CVE id does not necessarily imply that the issue is a serious threat to a Debian system.”
How release and component affect the answer
Security status depends on both the Debian suite and the package component. Debian’s Security FAQ describes the support distinctions this way:
- Stable: The Security Team prioritizes security work for stable.
- Unstable: Security handling is primarily the responsibility of package maintainers.
- Testing: Fixes flow through work in unstable, so migration delays or transitions can postpone their arrival in testing.
- contrib, non-free, and non-free-firmware: These are not official parts of the Debian distribution and are not generally supported by the Security Team. Some packages may still be handled when maintainers provide a usable fix.
These differences are why a finding should be checked against the system’s actual release, component, and tracker status—not generalized from another Debian suite.

How Debian handles CVSS scores
Debian says it does not provide CVSS scores and does not use external CVSS scores to triage issues. A score shown by a scanner or another database is that source’s assessment; use Debian’s tracker and advisory to determine Debian package and release status. The Debian Security FAQ explains its approach at debian.org/security/faq.

How to follow new Debian advisories
Debian’s Security Information page links the advisory index and tracker, and provides subscription information for the debian-security-announce mailing list. Debian also identifies unattended-upgrades as an option for automatically applying security and other updates. Automatic installation can reduce delay, but it does not replace checking whether an issue applies to a particular release or whether a service needs restarting.
For a dated illustration, the security index listed DSA-6545-1 for roundcube on October 6, 2026. That is an example of the index linking an advisory and tracker entry, not a durable count or a current recommendation; consult the live index for current notices.
