In Dead Cells, a weapon’s scaling stat determines how its damage benefits from your build, while affixes add effects that can change how well it works with your other gear. For an item listing two stats, the higher one drives damage scaling. Colorless and legendary gear instead use your highest stat; since update 3.0, legendaries no longer scale with your two highest stats.
How weapon scaling works
Dead Cells has three main stats: Brutality, Tactics, and Survival. A weapon can list one or two of them as its scaling stats. Scaling determines which of your stats the weapon uses to benefit its damage: investing in the relevant stat makes that weapon a better match for your build.

If an item lists two stats, the higher of your current values is the active damage-scaling stat. The item icon’s dominant color indicates which stat is ahead; if the values are equal, the icon splits its color. A two-stat listing therefore does not mean that the weapon always draws equally from both stats. Which one leads depends on your current stat values.
For example, if a weapon lists Brutality and Tactics, compare your current Brutality and Tactics values. Whichever is higher is the active scaling stat for that item. If the two values are equal, the split icon reflects the tie. This is why the stat names on the item and your current build matter more than a general assumption about what a weapon “should” scale with.

What to do with a two-stat weapon
- Read the item’s listed scaling stats instead of assuming that its weapon type or appearance tells you which stat it uses.
- Compare those stats with your current values. The higher listed stat is the one driving damage scaling.
- When choosing where to invest scrolls, keep most of your investment aligned with the weapon you plan to use. Splitting investment just to make both listed stats equal can work against the usual non-legendary approach.
- Check the icon color as a quick visual confirmation of which stat currently leads, particularly when comparing a new drop with your equipped weapon.
The official gear reference describes Brutality weapons as usually lighter and faster, and Survival weapons as usually slower and heavier. These are tendencies, not rules for every weapon. Evaluate the moveset and effects as well as the color or listed stat: a weapon’s practical fit is not determined by its archetype alone.
In other words, scaling is one part of a weapon choice, not a complete ranking system. A weapon whose scaling aligns with your leading stat can still be a poor fit if you do not like its moveset or cannot make its effects useful. Conversely, a weapon should not be dismissed just because its category does not match a broad expectation about speed or weight. Check the actual item.
What colorless means
A colorless item uses your highest stat, even when that stat is different from the item’s usual scaling. That makes it possible for the same base item to fit different builds depending on which stat is highest on the run. The item is not locked to the stat you might normally associate with its type.

Colorless items can be found in cursed chests and when unlocking a blueprint from the Collector. If you acquire one, check which stat is currently highest rather than applying the ordinary two-stat rule. A colorless item’s scaling follows your build’s leading stat.
This also gives you a quick way to distinguish the decision from ordinary dual-stat gear: for a normal item with two listed stats, compare those two values; for a colorless item, compare all three main stats and identify the highest. Do not infer a colorless item’s scaling from the base weapon’s usual stat or from its archetype.

How legendary weapons scale
Legendary items are colorless, so they scale with your highest stat. They do not currently use the two highest stats. That distinction matters if you have read an older guide that recommends splitting your scroll investment to improve a legendary weapon.
Update 3.0 changed legendary scaling from the two highest stats to the single highest stat. The update also gave legendaries +6 gear power and replaced a guaranteed starred affix with a guaranteed legendary affix. Legendaries cannot be upgraded and have the same power increase as S-quality items.

Motion Twin explained the change in the update 3.0 notes: double-stat scaling was “mostly overpowered,” counter-intuitive because non-legendary play generally rewards concentrating stats, and “not really fun” because it added more damage on top of damage. That is the developer’s rationale for the change, not a universal judgment about how every build should be played.
The practical takeaway is that finding a legendary does not mean you should change the way you build your stats to split them. Under the documented 3.0 rules, its damage scaling follows whichever of Brutality, Tactics, or Survival is highest. Its extra gear power and guaranteed affix are separate factors to weigh when deciding whether it improves your current setup.
What affixes do
Affixes are additional effects shown beneath an item’s primary description. The base weapon tells you what the item does; its affixes add effects that may improve damage in particular circumstances or contribute other effects, such as generating arrows or grenades.

Read an affix as two parts: its effect and any condition that must be met for that effect to matter. For example, an effect that improves damage against an enemy affected by a status depends on your ability to apply that status reliably. If your build rarely triggers the condition, the affix may contribute less in practice than its wording first suggests.

Ask what action or other piece of gear will cause the condition, and whether that trigger is part of how you actually play the run. A conditional damage effect is not automatically useful merely because its potential benefit sounds strong.
Check how an affix fits the rest of the build
- Can you meet its condition? For a conditional damage bonus, identify how your weapon or other gear will apply the required status and whether that happens consistently.
- Does it add an effect you can use? Affix-generated arrows and grenades can interact with status-on-hit effects, so consider whether those extra hits support the way your build applies statuses.
- Does it complement the weapon? An affix should be judged alongside the weapon’s moveset and the rest of your equipment, not as an isolated line of text.
- Is the effect useful now? An effect can be strong in the right setup but a poor fit if your current weapons or other effects do not help activate it.
When an affix creates arrows or grenades, consider those effects as possible parts of your status application rather than treating the affix text as unrelated to your other gear. The affix reference documents that these generated effects can interact with status-on-hit effects. The useful question is whether that interaction fits the build you have, not whether an affix is attractive in isolation.
What is different about legendary affixes?
A legendary item has a specific, guaranteed legendary affix in addition to its ordinary rolled affixes. The guaranteed effect is item-specific, so inspect the actual legendary rather than assuming every legendary has the same bonus.
The guaranteed affix is generated after the normal affixes. That order allows legendary gear to have combinations that ordinary gear cannot get. Motion Twin’s update 3.0 notes put it plainly: “A Legendary Weapon will always have its Legendary Affix on top of its normal rolled ones.” The legendary affix is an extra part of the item, not a replacement for checking its ordinary affixes.

So there are two things to inspect on a legendary: the ordinary affixes it rolled and the fixed legendary effect. The guaranteed effect can make a combination possible that ordinary gear cannot have, but it does not remove the need to check scaling, moveset, or whether the effect supports your current build.

Do not choose by rarity label alone. Compare the factors below in order of practical relevance to your current run. A legendary can be an excellent fit, but its label does not establish that it is better for every build or situation.

A quick decision sequence
- Start with the weapon’s moveset. If you do not want to use it, favorable scaling or affixes may not make it the right drop for you.
- Check scaling. Confirm the listed stats and which one is active; for colorless gear, compare your highest stat.
- Compare gear level and quality, then read the ordinary affixes on both items.
- For every conditional affix, ask whether your current setup can trigger it. Include interactions from affix-generated arrows or grenades if status-on-hit effects matter to your build.
- If a drop is legendary, include its item-specific guaranteed affix in the comparison. Decide based on how the complete item fits your build, not on the label alone.
This sequence keeps unlike items comparable. First decide whether the base weapon suits you, then check how it scales with your stats. After that, compare displayed level and quality, and read the effects with their conditions in mind. If one drop is legendary, include its guaranteed effect but still evaluate its regular affixes and overall fit.
Why older guides may disagree
Older information can describe mechanics that no longer match the documented rules. Update 1.9 removed scrolls from items; Hunter’s Grenade is listed as an exception that gains one scroll of each stat at 3 or more Boss Stem Cells. A guide describing scrolls on ordinary gear may therefore reflect an earlier version.
Update 3.0 also changed legendary scaling. The rule described by the official gear history and the 3.0 notes is that legendaries remain colorless, use the highest stat, receive +6 gear power, and carry a guaranteed legendary affix. If you are playing a version released after those references, consult that version’s official patch notes for any subsequent changes; no later change is established here.
The version distinction is especially relevant to two pieces of old advice: that gear carries scrolls, and that a legendary benefits from your two highest stats. The documented update history says ordinary item scrolls were removed in 1.9, with the Hunter’s Grenade exception noted above, and legendary double-stat scaling ended in 3.0. Those rules explain why older descriptions may not match what you see in game.
