In the 2024 D&D Basic Rules, casting a spell is not an Arcana check: a character must have access to that spell and meet the requirements in its rules, including any Verbal, Somatic, or Material components. Arcana is an Intelligence skill for recalling lore about magic. This guide follows the 2024 rules unless it explicitly labels a 2014 comparison; use the edition your table plays.
What “arcane magic” means in play
Arcane magic describes a kind of magic in D&D’s fiction, but the rules for casting come from the character’s class feature or another rule that grants access to spells, together with each spell’s description. The 2024 Wizard description presents the wizard as a student of arcane magic and provides that class’s spellcasting rules and spellbook. It is an example, not a rule that makes every spellcaster a wizard or gives every class identical spellcasting mechanics. See the 2024 Basic Rules’ character classes.

The 2014 rules describe spellcasting as manipulating invisible strands of raw magic. That is a way to picture the fiction, not a separate universal mechanic that overrides class features or spell descriptions. For the rules at your table, follow its edition and the specific feature and spell being used.
How a character casts a spell
- Confirm access. The character needs the spell through a class feature or another rules source that grants it. A character cannot cast any spell simply by knowing about it.
- Read the spell’s requirements. Check its casting information, especially the Components entry, and follow any other requirements in the spell and the character’s feature.
- Provide every required component. If the character cannot provide one or more required components, the 2024 rules say the spell cannot be cast. A focus or component pouch can stand in for some material components, but only when the rules allow it.
The 2024 Basic Rules spellcasting rules explain these component requirements. The 2024 Player’s Handbook also lists spellcasting in Chapter 7, “Spells.”

What Verbal, Somatic, and Material components require
A spell’s Components entry identifies whether it requires Verbal (V), Somatic (S), Material (M) components, or a combination. Treat each listed component as a requirement, not as flavor you can ignore when inconvenient.
| Component | What it requires under the 2024 Basic Rules | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal (V) | Esoteric words spoken in a normal speaking voice. | A gag or magical silence prevents casting a spell with a Verbal component. |
| Somatic (S) | Gestures that require at least one hand. | If the caster cannot use a hand to make the gestures, the Somatic requirement is unmet. |
| Material (M) | The material named by the spell; the caster needs a free hand to access it. | A component pouch or a spellcasting focus may substitute only where the rules permit. A listed cost or a consumed component needs special attention in the spell’s text. |
The 2024 component rules state that materials are not consumed unless the spell says so. If a spell says a material is consumed, the caster must account for that requirement rather than treating a focus as a universal replacement. Likewise, a listed cost matters: a focus or pouch does not automatically satisfy every material entry. Check the individual spell and the applicable focus rules.

How 2014 component rules compare
The 2014 Basic Rules also divide components into Verbal, Somatic, and Material, and allow a component pouch or spellcasting focus to replace eligible material components. Its wording expressly says a focus or pouch cannot replace a costly material component, and a consumed component must be supplied for each casting. Consult the 2014 Basic Rules spellcasting section if your campaign uses that edition; do not assume its wording automatically governs a 2024 game.
What an Intelligence (Arcana) check does
Arcana is a knowledge skill, not a casting prerequisite. The 2024 Basic Rules describe it as recalling lore about spells, magic items, and the planes. A DM may call for an Intelligence (Arcana) check when a character tries to recall relevant magical lore. The general rule does not require an Arcana roll every time a character casts a spell.

The 2014 Basic Rules define the skill more expansively: “Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes.” That sentence is rules text from the 2014 Basic Rules, not a quotation attributed to a named speaker. The 2024 summary and 2014 definition are in 2024 Basic Rules: Playing the Game and 2014 Basic Rules: Using Ability Scores, respectively.

- Arcana: a check the DM may call for to recall magical lore.
- Components: physical requirements that a particular spell may impose on its caster.
- Spellcasting access: permission to cast a spell granted by a class feature or another rule.
Knowing lore about a spell does not, by itself, grant the ability to cast it. Conversely, a character who can cast a spell does not make an Arcana check just because the spell is magical. The spell and the character’s rules determine what casting requires.
