How Data Center Batteries Support Backup Power and Renewable Energy

Data center batteries can bridge power interruptions, shift renewable energy to later use and provide grid services—but outage backup requires a suitable islandable design.

Data center batteries serve two related but distinct purposes: UPS batteries provide immediate, short-duration continuity for critical equipment, while larger battery storage can shift electricity use, support renewable energy, and provide grid services. A storage system only provides outage backup when its electrical design and controls allow it to operate independently of the grid.

How do data center batteries support backup power?

The first battery role is continuity. A data center’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) uses batteries to keep selected equipment powered through an interruption in utility electricity. That short window can let an emergency generator start and take over, or give operators time to respond to the event. The UPS is therefore a bridge, not automatically a source of power for an extended outage.

The loads protected by a UPS are the critical equipment the facility has selected to keep running. NREL notes that a data center’s critical load can differ from its typical facility load. That distinction matters: the backup system is designed around the equipment that must remain powered, not necessarily every system drawing electricity at the site.

Runtime varies with the system configuration and the load being served. NREL describes UPS use as typically lasting up to a few hours, but that is not a guarantee for any particular installation. Its 2011 data-center case study offers a dated illustration: a 500 kW UPS supplied 15 minutes of backup to servers, storage, and network equipment, sustaining the data center until its emergency generator started. Those figures describe that case, not a current industry standard or sizing recommendation.

What is the difference between a UPS and larger battery storage?

Both use batteries, but they need not serve the same purpose. A UPS is the immediate continuity layer for critical loads. Larger battery energy storage can be designed for longer or different operating tasks, such as storing electricity when supply is plentiful and discharging it later. Depending on its configuration, a larger system may also contribute to backup or provide services to the electricity grid.

System role What it does Key design question
UPS continuity Provides short-duration power to selected critical equipment during an interruption. Which loads must remain online, and for how long?
Renewable-energy shifting Stores excess renewable generation and discharges when generation is lower or demand occurs later. When is generation available relative to the facility’s electricity demand?
Grid services May support functions such as frequency regulation, peak shaving, or reserve and ramping needs. Which operating services is the system configured and permitted to provide?
Outage support from storage Can maintain selected loads during a grid outage if designed to operate independently of the grid. Can the system safely island and supply the intended loads?

These roles are not mutually exclusive. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) notes that utility-scale battery installations may serve more than one use. But a battery’s presence at a site does not by itself establish what it can do: the electrical arrangement, controls, intended load, and operating plan determine whether a particular function is available.

How can battery storage help data centers use renewable energy?

Renewable generation and electricity demand do not always occur at the same time. Solar output, for example, is tied to daylight, while a data center’s electricity needs may fall at other hours. A battery can charge when generation exceeds demand and discharge later, helping move some electricity from a time of surplus to a time when it is more useful. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes storage as a way to shift solar energy to periods when the sun is not producing.

Storage can also help smooth variable solar output. In practical terms, that means a battery can absorb or deliver electricity as generation changes, subject to its design and operating limits. It does not make renewable generation constant or create new energy; it changes when some of the stored electricity is used.

The value of this arrangement depends on the relationship among the facility’s load, the renewable generator’s output, and the battery’s charging and discharging plan. A site with generation at times when demand is relatively low may have an opportunity to store surplus electricity. A site whose demand and generation already align differently will face a different storage task. The battery therefore has to be considered alongside the site’s actual electricity profile rather than as a generic add-on to solar or wind.

Co-location is one way batteries are paired with renewable generation. EIA reported that U.S. utility-scale battery systems co-located with renewable generators grew from two in 2011 to 207 in 2022. Nearly all of the 2022 co-located systems were paired with solar photovoltaic plants, while fourteen were paired with wind projects. These counts concern utility-scale installations in the United States; they are not counts of data center projects.

Does a grid-connected battery automatically provide outage backup?

No. A battery connected to the grid for energy shifting or grid services is not automatically able to keep a data center powered when the grid fails. To supply loads during an outage, the site needs a suitable configuration and islanding controls so the battery system can operate independently of the grid. That capability must be part of the system design; it should not be assumed from a battery’s size or from its grid connection.

Island operation also makes the intended load important. The backup plan must identify which equipment the system is expected to serve and how long it must operate. A configuration intended to shift renewable electricity during normal grid operation does not, on that basis alone, establish how it will behave during an interruption. Backup readiness is a separate design requirement to resolve with the project’s electrical design and controls.

What other jobs can batteries perform?

In addition to backup and renewable shifting, EIA lists several uses for utility-scale battery storage: frequency regulation, arbitrage, ramping or spinning reserve, storing excess solar and wind energy, and peak shaving. These are grid and energy-management functions, not all forms of emergency backup.

  • Frequency regulation: a grid service intended to help manage changes in electrical-system frequency.
  • Arbitrage: charging and discharging in response to differences in electricity value over time.
  • Ramping or spinning reserve: services related to the grid’s ability to respond to changing supply or demand and maintain reserves.
  • Peak shaving: discharging to reduce demand drawn from the grid during higher-demand periods.
  • Excess renewable storage: charging when solar or wind output exceeds what is immediately needed and using that stored electricity later.

The 2021 application data reported by EIA in 2023 illustrate why battery use should not be reduced to a single label. Excess solar and wind energy storage accounted for 30% of total utility-scale battery power capacity in that application data, while backup power accounted for 2%. Those percentages can overlap because a system may have multiple uses; they are not mutually exclusive shares and are not specific to data centers.

What determines the right battery setup for a data center?

There is no universal runtime or single configuration that fits every facility. NREL identifies outage length and the critical load as factors in backup-system choice. A useful design discussion starts by defining the service required, then matching the electrical system and operating plan to it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify critical loads. Determine which servers, storage, network equipment, and other systems must stay powered. The critical load may not equal the facility’s normal total load.
  2. Set the required runtime. Establish how long those loads need continuity, including the intended handoff to another backup source if one is part of the plan. Do not infer a runtime from the battery’s nameplate power alone.
  3. Clarify the operating purpose. Decide whether the battery is meant for UPS continuity, renewable shifting, grid services, outage support, or a combination. Multiple services may be possible, but they should be deliberate design objectives.
  4. Confirm outage operation. If the system must serve loads with the grid down, verify that the site design and controls support islanding and identify what the system will supply in that mode.
  5. Match storage to the energy profile. For renewable shifting, compare the timing of generation with the facility’s demand and determine when the battery is expected to charge and discharge.
  6. Check electrical compatibility and operating constraints. Confirm that the UPS or storage equipment is compatible with the site’s electrical design and with the loads it is expected to support.

These questions separate capacity from capability. Power capacity describes how much power a system can provide at a given moment; energy capacity describes how much energy it can store. Both matter, but neither alone says whether the battery can sustain a particular critical load for a required duration or transition into island operation.

Which battery chemistry is used?

DOE identifies lithium-ion as the most common battery-cell chemistry, with lead-acid, sodium, and nickel-based batteries among other common options. That overview does not establish which chemistry is best for a particular data-center UPS or larger storage project. Chemistry should not be selected from a general popularity ranking alone; the relevant choice depends on the facility’s application and equipment requirements.

For a small server room or a UPS replacement, a compatible UPS battery backup module may be relevant, but compatibility is model-specific. A replacement must match the UPS requirements; a consumer or rack-mount unit should not be assumed suitable for a data center without checking load, required runtime, electrical specifications, and model compatibility.

Why is the question becoming more important?

Data center electricity demand is expected to grow, increasing attention to both reliable power and the sources used to supply it. DOE cited an EPRI estimate that data centers could consume up to 9% of U.S. electricity generation annually by 2030, compared with 4% of total U.S. load in 2023. The 2030 figure is a forecast, not a measured outcome, and the two figures are reported with different denominators: generation for the projection and total load for 2023.

For broader context, EIA reported 8,842 MW of operational U.S. utility-scale battery power capacity and 11,105 MWh of energy capacity at the end of 2022. EIA’s capacity data cover facilities with at least 1 MW of total operational nameplate capacity. These figures describe the U.S. utility-scale battery fleet, not data-center batteries or the capacity required by an individual facility.

DOE has described solar energy, land-based wind energy, battery storage, and energy efficiency as rapidly scalable and cost-competitive ways to meet increased electricity demand from data centers. That statement explains why storage is part of the energy conversation, but it does not establish that a particular battery project is economical or suitable for every data center. A current, comparable data-center-specific cost figure is not available in the cited material.

What the numbers do—and do not—tell you

Historical examples and fleet statistics help explain the range of battery roles, but they should not be converted into a design rule. The 2011 NREL UPS case shows one system bridging an interruption until a generator started. EIA’s 2022 capacity totals describe utility-scale installations across the United States. Neither specifies the battery configuration, runtime, or cost appropriate for a new data center.

For a facility decision, the useful outputs are concrete: a defined critical load, a required runtime, an agreed operating purpose, and a verified plan for grid-connected and outage conditions. Those details distinguish an immediate UPS bridge from a storage system intended to shift renewable energy—and show whether one installation is designed to do both.
