Dash cams typically keep recording after a memory card fills by overwriting older footage. A G-sensor can flag an impact-related clip so it is less likely to be overwritten, while parking mode describes several ways a camera may record when the car is off. Parking recording needs a continuing power source, and its behavior depends on the camera and its setup.
What loop recording does when the card fills
Loop recording splits video into files and reuses storage as needed: when the card runs out of free space, the camera deletes or overwrites older files to make room for new footage. The VIOFO A229 Ultra manual, for example, lets users choose file lengths of 1, 2, 3, 5, or 10 minutes and says the oldest files are overwritten one by one when space runs low. Those durations are specific to that model, not a standard across dash cams. VIOFO A229 Ultra manual

Loop recording does not guarantee that a particular trip remains available. If you need to keep a clip, use the camera’s event-lock or file-protection feature if available, then copy the footage somewhere safe. Check the manual for how protected clips are handled and how to manage them.
How a G-sensor protects event footage
A G-sensor detects movement, such as a sudden impact or hard braking. On the cited VIOFO and DDPAI cameras, detection can trigger an emergency recording that is locked or stored separately from ordinary loop files, helping keep it from routine overwriting. VIOFO A229 Ultra manual DDPAI support

Sensitivity affects what counts as an event. A high setting may flag smaller shocks; a lower setting requires a stronger movement. If the camera locks many clips, they can consume card space that would otherwise be available for loop recording. Review and preserve or remove protected files according to the camera’s manual.
What parking mode can mean
“Parking mode” is a broad label, not one universal recording method. Depending on the camera, it may record continuously, capture time-lapse or reduced-frame-rate video, start recording when motion or an impact is detected, or sleep in a low-power state and wake after an event. Some cameras buffer a few seconds before a trigger; others begin recording only after waking, so they may capture different amounts of what happened just before an event. Time Lapse Parking Mode provides continuous surveillance by offering a condensed overview of any events that may occur during parking periods. *Please note that the parking monitoring function requires a separate hardwire kit.
Motion detection and impact detection are different
BlackVue describes image-sensor motion detection separately from accelerometer/G-sensor impact detection, and offers time-lapse parking recording on supported models. Its documentation says buffered clips include a few seconds before the trigger. Treat these as BlackVue-specific capabilities, not as a promise about every brand or camera. Power, battery protection, and runtime
A camera cannot monitor a parked car without power after the ignition is off. Depending on the vehicle and camera, parking mode may require a compatible hardwire or step-down kit, or a dedicated parking-mode battery. Manufacturer materials describe voltage monitoring or low-voltage protection that can stop recording when a selected battery threshold is reached. Actual runtime and cutoff behavior depend on the camera, power accessory, vehicle battery condition, and settings; there is no single runtime or cutoff value that applies to all setups. Before relying on parking recording, check whether the camera needs a separate power accessory, whether that accessory is compatible with your vehicle and camera, how low-voltage protection is configured, and whether recording stops at a selected time limit or battery threshold. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installation and battery protection.

Loop files and protected event files share the card’s capacity. Loop recording can reclaim space by overwriting older ordinary clips, but locked or separately stored events may remain until you manage them. A card full of protected files can therefore limit continued recording. Check your model’s supported card type and maximum capacity before buying, and review its instructions for formatting and clearing files. VIOFO A229 Ultra manual DDPAI support

What to compare in parking-mode features
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Recording behavior | Find out whether it records continuously, uses time-lapse, responds to motion or impact, or sleeps and wakes. |
| Pre-event buffer | Check whether footage from before a trigger is saved, and how much the manufacturer says is buffered. |
| Power setup | Confirm whether a hardwire/step-down kit or dedicated battery is required and whether it is compatible with the camera and vehicle. |
| Battery protection | Check whether power is cut at a low-voltage threshold and how that protection is selected or configured. |
| Runtime | Look for a selectable recording limit and what happens when the limit or power cutoff is reached. |
| File handling | Check whether triggered clips are locked, how loop footage is overwritten, and how to free space when protected files accumulate. |
Practical setup checks
- Confirm the camera’s supported microSD type and maximum capacity in its manual.
- Set G-sensor sensitivity for the shocks you want to flag, then check whether ordinary driving creates too many locked clips.
- Learn how to lock, export, and delete event files before you need to preserve footage.
- For parking mode, verify the required power source, low-voltage protection, runtime limit, and pre-event behavior for your specific model.
