On a Danish spot-price electricity contract, the consumption component follows the market price hour by hour. An EV owner may be able to shift charging into lower-price hours, but only if the car, charger or charging service can schedule it—and the household’s total bill includes more than the spot price.
Why charging time can affect the price
A spot-price agreement makes the electricity-consumption component track the market price hour by hour, according to borger.dk’s guidance on electricity use and prices. That gives flexible electricity use, such as charging an EV, a potential advantage: charging can be moved to hours when the market price is lower.

This does not mean the entire household electricity bill equals the spot price. Other bill components also apply. Check your contract and bill to understand which parts vary with the hourly market price and which do not.
What smart charging actually does
Smart charging schedules a session rather than necessarily starting as soon as the vehicle is plugged in. Depending on the setup, timing may be controlled by the car, the charger, or a supplier’s app or service. The equipment and software must work together: a schedule is useful only if the vehicle and charger follow it.
#1 Best Overall
- Charge with Confidence: ChargePoint builds reliable, flexible EV charging stations for home, business, and fleets. Get 24/7 support and access to hundreds of thousands of North American charging locations.
- Charge Smart: With the user-friendly ChargePoint Mobile App, you can control your electric car charger, manage reminders, connect to smart home devices, find stations, get data and charging info, and access the latest features. Note: WiFi is needed for certain functionalities and troubleshooting steps if connectivity issues arise.
- Vast Network: Wherever you go, ChargePoint’s network includes 274k+ stations across North America and Europe and 565k+ roaming partner stations.
- Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
- Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.
For example, Enkel Energi says its app can schedule charging for cheaper hours and lists compatibility with Zaptec, NexBlue and Easee chargers on its Welcome and Smart Charge service page. That is a provider’s stated compatibility, not a universal guarantee. Confirm the exact charger model, vehicle and service terms before relying on a schedule.
Clever’s home-charging information, displayed through A.M., describes plugging in when electricity is attractive or letting intelligent charging manage timing. See the Clever home-charging information for the provider’s description and current conditions.

- WORKS WITH EVERY NON-TESLA EV: Standard J1772 connector plugs straight into Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Rivian, Lucid and every other EV or plug-in hybrid sold with a J1772 port - no adapter needed. Tesla drivers can charge too, using the J1772 adapter that comes with the car.
- PLUG IN, NO HARDWIRING: Level 2 charger delivers up to 40A to fully charge most EVs overnight. Plugs into a 240V, 4-prong NEMA 14-50 outlet (the RV/range type - NOT a dryer outlet) on a dedicated 50A circuit. The extra-long 25 ft cable easily reaches across a garage or driveway. Before ordering, check your car's port type and that you have the right outlet.
- CONTROL & SAVE FROM YOUR PHONE: A stronger built-in antenna keeps the charger online even in a garage or basement. Use the free app to start/stop charging, set speed (6-40A), get reminders, and track energy use and cost. Schedule off-peak overnight charging to cut your electric bill. Requires 2.4 GHz WiFi.
- SAFETY-CERTIFIED & WEATHERPROOF: Independently tested and certified (UL, ETL, FCC, Energy Star). A fully sealed IP66 / NEMA 4 housing stands up to rain, snow, heat and dust indoors or out, and internal steel shielding protects the electronics for years of reliable use.
- GLOW-IN-THE-DARK HOLSTER: The included high-visibility holster glows in the dark so you can find and dock the plug easily at night. Holds the connector securely when not in use.
Check your setup before choosing a scheduling method
- Check the electricity agreement. Confirm that the consumption component uses hourly spot prices and identify other charges that affect the bill.
- Identify who can control charging. Check the vehicle’s charging settings, the charger’s functions and any supplier app. Avoid enabling multiple schedules that might conflict.
- Verify compatibility. Ask whether your specific car and charger will follow the chosen service’s schedule, not merely whether their brands appear on a general compatibility list.
- Set the charging window around your needs. Make sure the schedule leaves enough time to reach the required charge before departure. Check whether it starts charging automatically when the vehicle is connected.
- Review installation and total cost. A replacement charger may require assessment of the home’s electrical setup and installation. Compare the full cost and terms before buying equipment for a feature your current setup may already support.
When a new home charger may be relevant
An existing charger may be sufficient if it is compatible with a scheduling service and the car reliably follows its instructions. If you are comparing equipment, check connector, vehicle compatibility, power needs, scheduling control, installation requirements and the total cost—not just whether a product advertises smart charging.

What Danish rules and tax relief do—and do not—cover
Intelligent charging rule for certain public charge points
The Danish Road Traffic Authority says charge points established after 13 April 2024 or renovated after 14 October 2024 must allow intelligent charging. Its AFIR guidance concerns publicly accessible charge points and associated requirements; it does not establish that a private household must replace its home charger.
Electricity-tax refund from 2026
In a notice published 18 December 2025, the Danish Tax Agency described an expanded electricity-tax refund arrangement running from 1 January 2026 through 31 December 2030. It applies to charging operators serving households with renewable-energy installations and EV charging equipment, subject to the scheme’s conditions. The operator needs the household’s consent to retrieve grid-consumption data from DataHub; hourly charger and grid measurements are compared, and the lower measurement for each hour forms the basis for the refund. The Tax Agency’s notice describes an operator-administered arrangement, not an automatic refund available to every EV-owning household.
