The seven products named in Matthew Lynch’s August 5, 2026 article are Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, LG Chem Prime, Generac PWRcell, SolarEdge Energy Bank, FranklinWH Franklin Home Power (FHP), and Sungrow SBR Series. They are examples to investigate—not a verified ranking, proof that millions of households are installing batteries, or confirmation that every model is currently available in every market. U.S. grid battery capacity has grown quickly, but grid-wide figures do not count residential installations.
What the seven-system list does—and does not—establish
The list comes from a The Tech Edvocate article by Matthew Lynch, published August 5, 2026. It names these systems:

Lynch’s article makes positive claims about attributes such as reliability, integration, modularity, monitoring, scalability, and backup. Those are the article’s characterizations, not the result of an independent comparison established by the available official sources. The list should not be treated as a complete market survey or a current “best” ranking. Nor does it establish current availability for a particular model or product line in a particular location.
Does the evidence show that millions of homeowners are installing batteries?
No residential installation count in the cited figures supports that headline claim. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported 43.6 gigawatts (GW) of operational battery storage capacity at the end of 2025. It also reported that 8.3 GW was added in the first six months of 2026, bringing U.S. nameplate battery storage capacity to nearly 52 GW. These are power-system capacity figures—not counts of household batteries, homeowners, or the seven named products. See the EIA’s August 7, 2026 report.

Other EIA figures need the same distinction. In February 2026, the agency reported that developers planned 86 GW of new utility-scale generation capacity for that year, with solar accounting for 51% and battery storage for 28% of planned additions. That was a forecast of planned capacity, not a record of completed installations. In February 2025, EIA forecast 18.2 GW of utility-scale battery additions for 2025; that was a forecast published before the year ended, not a final actual. Neither figure establishes residential adoption.
Battery capacity growth is evidence of a changing U.S. power system. It cannot, by itself, show how many homeowners are buying or installing a home battery.

What a home battery does
A battery stores electricity that has already been generated so it can be used later; it is storage, not a primary source of electricity. In a solar-equipped home, a compatible system may store surplus solar generation for later use. Whether it can supply power during an outage, which circuits it can run, and whether it reduces a bill depend on system design, installation, local electricity rates and utility arrangements. The cited material does not establish household-level savings or outage performance for the seven listed products.

A battery installation is a system decision, not just a product choice. The battery, inverter or power electronics, electrical panel, transfer equipment, solar configuration and any generator connection can affect what the household can use. A product name alone does not tell you whether the installation will provide whole-home backup or keep only selected loads running.

How to compare options for your home
Ask installers to document the same requirements and provide comparable, written proposals. DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program publishes a lithium-ion battery storage technical specification resource with a customizable procurement template and a system evaluation method. It is designed for federal agencies, not as a consumer ranking of these seven systems, but it illustrates why requirements and evaluation criteria matter.

Also ask for the assumed operating configuration and any exclusions in writing. A nominal capacity or power figure without its configuration and limits may not describe what your home can draw in normal operation or during an outage. The available sources do not provide comparable, current specifications, installed prices, warranty terms or local service details for all seven named systems, so they cannot support a fair product-by-product performance table or universal winner.

What to verify before signing
- Confirm the exact model and configuration in the proposal, along with whether it is currently offered and supported where you live.
- Have the installer assess your panel, solar equipment, intended backup loads and any generator plans before promising compatibility.
- Request the usable energy, continuous power and peak power figures for the quoted system, with the conditions attached to each.
- Check the warranty document, service responsibilities and coverage terms rather than relying on general product descriptions.
- Evaluate the installed quote against your actual utility tariff and export compensation. Treat savings, backup duration, payback and incentives as household-specific, not guaranteed outcomes.
