Currency exchange rates can change your return on Chinese bank shares even when the share price is flat. Your result in your own currency depends on both the share’s local-currency performance—including dividends—and the exchange rates used to convert your investment and cash flows. Broker conversion spreads and fees can reduce it further.
How currency changes affect your return
There are two distinct components: the investment’s price change and distributions in the relevant share or dividend currency, and the translation of those amounts into your own base currency. A gain in one component can be reduced or amplified by the other.

For example, if an RMB-priced share is unchanged but the RMB weakens against your base currency, converting the sale proceeds back may yield less than your original outlay. China Construction Bank (Asia) describes this risk in its Stock Connect risk disclosure: an investor may incur a loss converting proceeds even if the RMB asset price has not changed. Currency conversion costs can add to the loss.

For a simplified investment with one purchase and one sale, the arithmetic is:
#1 Best Overall
Ending value in base currency = ending local-currency value × ending base-currency units per local-currency unit.
This quote convention means, for example, how many units of your base currency one unit of the local currency buys. Use the same convention consistently; reversing it reverses the calculation. Compare the ending value with the original outlay converted into your base currency at the purchase rate.
Rank #2
- Convert the purchase cost using the actual rate and costs applied when you bought.
- Measure the share-price change and cash dividends in their relevant currencies.
- Translate sale proceeds and each dividend using the applicable conversion rate, accounting for fees, spreads and any investor-specific taxes.
- Compare the resulting net base-currency amount with your initial base-currency outlay.
With dividends paid at different times, translate each payment at the rate and costs that apply when it is converted or credited. This is a calculation method, not a forecast of either share performance or exchange rates.

A share’s trading currency does not necessarily determine the currency in which dividends are declared or received. Bank of China’s 2025 annual-report materials identify its H shares as Hong Kong-listed and traded in HKD, while the bank’s 2025 final-dividend circular says H-share holders may elect to receive the dividend in RMB or HKD. The circular says the HKD equivalent is calculated using a reference-rate average over specified working days before the currency election begins. A-share dividends in that circular are payable in RMB.
This is an issuer- and year-specific example, not a rule for every Chinese bank or future dividend. The amount ultimately credited in your own currency may also depend on your broker’s handling and any further conversion. Check the latest circular for the specific issuer and share class, as well as your broker’s payment and account-currency arrangements.
What to compare across Chinese bank share positions
A stronger or weaker RMB by itself does not establish which share class or bank is the better investment. To compare positions, separate the moving parts:
- Share performance: local-market price changes and cash distributions.
- Currency path: RMB against your base currency, and HKD against it where the holding or dividend is in HKD.
- Share class and market: A share or H share, listing venue, trading currency and availability through your broker.
- Dividend mechanics: declared currency, payment or election choices, any exchange-rate fixing convention and payment date, verified for the issuer and year.
- Realized costs and treatment: broker FX spreads, explicit fees, intermediate conversions, taxes, account currency and the timing of cash flows.
Currency effects on the bank are a separate question
An investor’s translation gain or loss is not the same as the effect of currency movements on a bank’s business or earnings. That issuer-level exposure depends on the bank’s currency-denominated assets and liabilities, operations and hedges. The cited materials do not establish one common quantified effect for Chinese banks as a group.
