The Major format uses three 16-team Swiss stages; the top eight teams after Stage 3 enter a single-elimination playoff. Other CS2 tournaments can set different formats and tiebreakers, so the event’s rulebook matters.
How a Swiss stage works in a CS2 Major
Each Swiss stage starts with teams accumulating wins and losses within that stage. For the first round, the Major’s initial seeds determine the pairings. Afterward, teams are grouped by their current record and face opponents in the same group: a 1–0 team plays another 1–0 team, for example. Valve’s CS Major Supplemental Rulebook also sets pairing priorities and rematch constraints; in rounds 2 and 3, it pairs the highest available seed with the lowest available seed when doing so avoids a rematch.

A record such as 2–1 means two wins and one loss in the current stage. It is not a separate bracket position: the team is paired with another team at 2–1, subject to the event’s pairing rules.
How many wins qualify, and how many losses eliminate?
In each Swiss stage under Valve’s Major rules, three wins advance a team and three losses eliminate it. That produces these possible advancement records:

- Counter Attack is a football (soccer) strategy game which lasts for 90 minutes. The two players ('managers') each control a team of 11 players. Every player has a unique set of skills that the managers try to best utilise during play. Managers control how the players move, pass, dribble, tackle and shoot.
- Duels between players on the pitch - whether tackles, shots or headers - are determined by a combination of the unique player skills plus a dice roll. During movement phases, a sand timer is used to keep the pace of the game up.
- Counter Attack features everything you'd expect in a game of football, from corners to free kicks, penalties to red cards and injuries.
- 3–0: advances without a loss.
- 3–1: advances after one loss.
- 3–2: advances after two losses.
The corresponding elimination records are 0–3, 1–3, and 2–3. The deciding result is reaching the third win or third loss, not finishing a fixed number of rounds. The rulebook specifies best-of-three (Bo3) matches for advancement and elimination; other Swiss matches are best-of-one (Bo1). The match length changes, but the win and loss thresholds do not.
What happens after the Swiss stages?
A Major has three consecutive 16-team Swiss stages. Teams that advance leave one stage and continue to the next; Stage 3 determines the eight teams that reach the playoffs. Those playoffs are single-elimination: a team’s loss ends its run. Valve’s rulebook specifies Bo3 matches in the playoff bracket.

What Buchholz means in CS2 seeding
Buchholz is a way to compare teams with the same record by looking at the results of the opponents they have already faced. In the cited Major rules, the statistic is called Difficulty Score. For mid-stage seeding, the stated order is current win–loss record, current-stage Difficulty Score, then initial stage seed.

The score is calculated by adding the current wins of every opponent a team has faced and subtracting those opponents’ current losses. A team whose opponents have stronger records can therefore receive a higher seed than another team with the same record. BLAST’s Major Rulebook illustrates the arithmetic: opponents currently at 2–0 and 1–1 combine for three wins and one loss, a Difficulty Score of 2. Two opponents each at 1–1 combine for two wins and two losses, a score of 0. With the teams’ own records tied, the first opponent set yields the higher seed.

This is a seeding calculation, not necessarily a separate tiebreak match or a universal method for deciding every qualification dispute. A different event may specify a different order of tiebreakers.
Why same-record teams play each other
Swiss pairing keeps teams with equal records competing against one another as the stage progresses. That means each match is between teams with similar results so far, while every result changes both teams’ records and their next pairing group. Seeding rules help order teams within those groups, and rematch rules constrain who can be paired together.

Major Swiss versus another CS2 event
Swiss is a family of formats, not a single tournament template. The Major rules below differ from the published SwitzerLAN format for a 25–32-team field:
| Format | Swiss structure | Advancement or cutoff | Tiebreak information |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Major | Three sequential 16-team stages; three wins advance and three losses eliminate | Top eight from Stage 3 enter the single-elimination playoffs | Mid-stage seeding orders teams by record, Difficulty Score, then initial stage seed |
| SwitzerLAN, 25–32-team format | Five Swiss rounds | Top 12 advance to a single-elimination playoff | Published criteria include Buchholz, head-to-head result, head-to-head round difference, and pre-tournament seeding |
The SwitzerLAN details come from its Counter Strike 2 Rules and are an example of event-specific rules, not an alternative universal standard. The cited rulebooks do not establish one global CS2 tiebreak order. For a named tournament, check its current rules for the number of stages and rounds, qualification threshold or cutoff, match length, playoff field, and tiebreak sequence.
