CS2 teams do not appear to rely on one public rating or universal scouting formula when considering a roster change. Reported examples show a layered process: define the team’s need, use statistics to narrow candidates, review demos and staff opinions, then observe shortlisted players in team settings. The final judgment is about contribution and fit—including role, communication, attitude, availability and the disruption of integration—not simply individual numbers.
How the evaluation process typically works
Interviews with staff and players at several teams describe related methods, not a league-wide standard. The sequence below synthesizes those reported examples; teams may combine or reorder the stages.

- Define the roster need. Identify the role or team function that needs attention before searching for a name. EG Counter-Strike director of athletics Soham “valens” Chowdhury said a team has to assess whether a candidate is good “in the role that we need.”
- Build a longlist and screen it. GamerLegion coach Ashley “ash” Battye and assistant coach imd described assembling a longlist and using statistics to reduce it to a manageable group for demo review. Numbers can help direct attention; that account does not describe stats as the final hiring decision.
- Review demos and collect staff views. A candidate’s rounds give coaches context for how the player makes decisions, uses utility and operates within a system. Ash described combining demo review and statistics with input from other people and discussion in meetings, calling scouting a team effort.
- Observe candidates with teammates. Trials or match settings can reveal communication, attitude and behavior that individual statistics do not fully capture. Valens named those factors alongside in-game ability. Player and IGL Nathan “NBK-” Schmitt also described playing open qualifiers with different players to get a better sense of how they behaved.
- Compare the candidate with the cost of changing. A signing has to be weighed against the current lineup, role constraints, timing and the work of integrating a new teammate. G2 management has described choosing to continue with its lineup after discussing possible changes and improvement goals; other accounts show how role mismatch can make a change necessary.
What teams may assess beyond kills and ratings
A public rating is a summary of recorded performance, not a complete description of how a player would help a particular lineup. An HLTV account of Evil Geniuses’ internal EGR rating reported that it considered communication, the quantity and quality of utility, mechanical skill, and performance in moments that dictate a game’s outcome. That is an example of one organization’s approach, not a standard CS2 score or a formula known to determine signings.
Research can also value actions in context rather than treating every event equally. The authors of the 2020 paper Valuing Player Actions in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive used more than 70 million in-game CS:GO events to demonstrate a framework based on changes in a team’s win probability. That figure describes the paper’s dataset; it does not measure current CS2 scouting coverage or establish that professional teams use that method.

How to compare plausible recruits
These are useful decision dimensions drawn from reported practices, not a published weighting system. A team’s priorities depend on the vacancy and its existing lineup.
| Dimension | What the team needs to establish |
|---|---|
| Demonstrated performance | What the candidate has shown, in what sample and competitive context, and whether the evidence is relevant to the intended role. |
| Role fit | Whether the player is comfortable in the needed role and can perform it without creating conflicts with current players’ responsibilities. |
| Communication and attitude | How the candidate communicates and behaves in trial or team settings, not only in individual match records. |
| Team contribution | How the player’s utility, mechanics and impact in decisive situations could serve the lineup, beyond a headline rating or kill total. |
| System and teammate compatibility | Whether the candidate’s approach fits the team’s system and complements its current players. |
| Availability and integration | Whether the candidate can join under the team’s roster constraints, and what time and performance disruption integration may involve. |
Why a strong player may still be the wrong signing
Role fit is specific to the lineup. A player can be individually skilled yet unsuitable if the available role is unfamiliar, overlaps with a teammate’s responsibilities or requires the team to rebuild its system. Ash summarized one roster issue bluntly: “We had roles that just didn’t fit.” NBK-’s description of trying players in open qualifiers illustrates why teams may want to observe behavior in a shared environment rather than infer compatibility from separate match records.

Timing and continuity matter too. G2 general manager Petar “peca” Marković said the organization considered changes, spoke with individuals it might replace, and ultimately chose to give the team another chance. That is an example of stability being an intentional choice, not proof that retaining a lineup is always preferable.

What roster changes can cost
Integrating a new player may disrupt both individual and collective performance before a team settles. A 2022 study, Individual and Collective Performance Deteriorate in a New Team: A Case Study of CS:GO Tournaments, reported initial declines after team switches followed by gradual recovery in its tournament data. It concerns CS:GO and reports a study result, not a guaranteed outcome for a particular CS2 transfer. It does, however, help explain why a team might weigh the likely benefit of a recruit against the adjustment period and the possibility of improving with its current roster.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
The examples come from interviews and reporting about named teams and staff at particular points in time: HLTV.org’s 2022 report on valens at EG, ash’s 2024 interview about GamerLegion, its 2024 account of data and Counter-Strike, its 2023 interview with G2’s general manager, and its 2025 interview with NBK-. Together they show plausible ways professionals have described evaluating players. They do not establish how common each practice is, a universal score weighting, or a rule that HLTV rating determines who gets signed.
