A crypto wallet does not hold coins. It manages the keys used to access blockchain accounts and gives you an interface for checking assets, receiving funds, and signing transactions. The assets remain recorded on the blockchain; the keys determine who can authorize their movement.
What a crypto wallet does
A wallet is software, a physical device, or a service that helps you manage access to blockchain accounts. It can display an account’s address and activity, prepare a transaction, and use the account’s private key to authorize it. The wallet and the account are related, but they are not the same thing.

On Ethereum, an account uses a public/private key pair, and the private key signs transactions. The blockchain records the assets and transactions. As Ethereum.org’s account documentation puts it: “You never really hold cryptocurrency, you hold private keys – the funds are always on Ethereum’s ledger.” Bitcoin uses keys to sign transactions as well; its documentation explains that signatures show authorization and help prevent a transaction from being altered after issuance. Key and address details vary by network, so one chain’s mechanics should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere.
How keys, addresses, and signing fit together
Public address: for receiving
A public address is the information you share when someone needs to send you assets. It is not the secret that authorizes spending. Check that the address matches the intended network and recipient before using it; an address for one network may not work as expected on another.

Private key: for authorizing
The private key must stay secret. It lets the wallet create a digital signature authorizing a transaction. The network can verify that signature without the wallet revealing the private key itself. Whoever obtains the key, or a recovery method that restores it, may be able to control the associated assets.
Signing: the wallet’s critical action
When you send assets or interact with an application, the wallet presents transaction details or a request for approval. If you approve, it signs the request and submits it to the network. A signature is not just a routine click: depending on the request, it may authorize a transfer or give a smart contract permission to move assets. Review what the wallet displays before signing.

Where your crypto is—and what happens when it moves
Crypto assets are represented by blockchain records, not files stored inside a wallet. A wallet reads account information from the network and helps you prove authority over the account. When a transaction is accepted, the blockchain ledger records the change. This is why losing a phone does not automatically erase assets, while losing every usable way to access a self-custody account can make those assets unreachable.

Custody and hot or cold storage are different choices
Two questions matter: who controls the keys, and how exposed to the internet is the key-management setup? These are separate dimensions. A wallet can be self-custodial or managed by a service, and it can use an online or offline approach.
| Choice | What it means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Self-custody | You control the keys and recovery method. | You have direct control, but you are responsible for protecting credentials and maintaining a working backup. |
| Third-party custody | A service provider controls access to the keys on your behalf. | Conventional account recovery may be available, but you rely on the provider’s security, solvency, policies, and withdrawal access. |
| Hot wallet | The key-management wallet is connected to the internet. | Convenient for frequent transactions and applications, but online exposure creates risks. |
| Cold wallet | Keys are kept offline, or transactions are signed offline. | Reduces online exposure, but can be less convenient and remains vulnerable to loss, damage, theft, or poor backup practices. |
For a custodian, check its security practices, how it handles customer assets, withdrawal rights and restrictions, fees, privacy practices, and what happens if the service is interrupted, shuts down, or becomes insolvent. Custodial recovery can be easier than restoring a self-custody wallet, but it is not the same as having direct control of the keys.

Is a hardware wallet safer?
A hardware wallet is a physical device designed to keep keys offline and, in some setups, sign transactions without exposing the key to an internet-connected computer. That can reduce online exposure compared with keeping keys in an internet-connected wallet. It does not make every risk disappear: a device can be stolen or damaged, a transaction can still be approved incorrectly, and anyone with the recovery phrase may be able to restore access.

Whether it is a better fit depends on how often you transact and whether you can securely store and recover the device and its backup. An offline device is not a substitute for checking transaction details or maintaining a safe recovery method.

How to protect access and recover safely
Protect the recovery phrase
A recovery or seed phrase can restore a wallet and its associated accounts. Treat it as a master key: anyone who obtains it may gain control. Never give it to a support agent, enter it into a website at someone else’s direction, or store it in a cloud-synced screenshot. Keep a backup in a secure place that remains accessible to you.
If you lose a self-custody recovery phrase and have no usable alternative backup or recovery method, the assets may become permanently inaccessible. Losing a hardware device alone does not necessarily mean losing access if you have a valid recovery backup. For a custodial account, recovery depends on the provider’s account processes and policies.
Check every request before signing
- Confirm the recipient address, network, and amount before sending.
- Read the wallet’s transaction or smart-contract request rather than approving reflexively.
- Be cautious about unlimited spending approvals; grant only permissions you need and understand.
- Do not follow links or instructions from unsolicited messages claiming to be wallet support.
Choose custody with the responsibility in mind
With self-custody, you are responsible for key security and recovery. With third-party custody, investigate the provider’s protections, fees, asset policies, withdrawal terms, and failure arrangements before relying on it. Neither label by itself guarantees safety; the practical question is whether you understand who can authorize access and how you would recover it.
