A crypto wallet drainer tricks you into authorizing access to your assets—often through a fake claim, mint, or verification page. Connecting a wallet usually reveals its public address; approving a transaction or signing a message can give a malicious party authority to move tokens or NFTs. The key safeguard is to verify the site and understand the wallet prompt before signing.
How a wallet drainer works
A drainer is phishing software used against people interacting with blockchain apps. Its operators impersonate a project or service and direct visitors to a malicious page. The page prompts them to connect a wallet, then seeks an approval or signature that can authorize asset transfers. Because the user signed or approved the action, the resulting transaction can be valid on-chain even if its purpose was misunderstood. Chainalysis and MetaMask describe these tactics.

1. A fake opportunity brings you to the page
Lures include fake airdrops, mints, claims, verification requests, cloned apps, compromised social accounts, and links shared in chats. The page may look like a legitimate project site and describe the next action as routine.

A site may first request a wallet connection, then prompt for a transaction or message signature. The important question is not how the page describes the step, but what the wallet is asking you to authorize. A prompt presented as a claim or listing can request permission to move tokens or NFTs.

3. The authorization is used to transfer assets
A token approval typically gives a specified spender permission to transfer a token, up to the allowance granted. An off-chain signature, such as one using Permit2, is not broadcast to the blockchain when you sign it; an attacker may submit it later, subject to its terms. Some drainer kits can batch transfers. MetaMask explains that off-chain signatures can be used later in its signature guidance.
4. Stolen assets may be moved onward
Once a transfer is confirmed, it is generally not reversible through your wallet provider. Chainalysis describes stolen funds being routed through DeFi services and other channels. Its April 2024 example of one drainer impersonating Magic Eden on Bitcoin Ordinals involved approximately $500,000 across more than 1,000 malicious transactions; that is a specific historical case, not an estimate of total losses from drainers. Chainalysis notes that total losses are difficult to track because many scams go unreported. Chainalysis, “Understanding Crypto Drainers,” May 16, 2024.

Can connecting a wallet drain it?
A connection is not the same as an asset-moving approval. A typical connection lets a site see your public wallet address; it does not, by itself, grant permission to transfer tokens. A later approval or signature may grant that authority, so inspect every wallet prompt rather than assuming that a connection or a message-signing request is harmless.
| Action | What it generally means | Risk to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Connect a wallet | The site can typically see the public address you connect. | Connection alone is distinct from permission to transfer assets. |
| Approve a token allowance | A spender can transfer the relevant token within the allowance. | Check the spender, token, amount, and any other terms shown. |
| Sign an off-chain authorization | The signature may be submitted later under its terms; it is not necessarily broadcast when signed. | Do not sign if you cannot understand or verify the request. |
| Share a recovery phrase or private key | This gives access to the wallet’s secret credentials. | Treat the wallet as compromised and move to recovery steps. |
Wallets and applications display requests differently, and some signatures are difficult to interpret. If the purpose or terms are unclear, do not sign.

How to reduce the risk
Verify the destination before connecting
- Navigate to a project through a domain or account you already know is official, rather than following an urgent unsolicited claim link.
- Be especially cautious with links shared through social media, Discord, chats, or accounts that may have been compromised.
- Do not follow claim links embedded in unsolicited tokens.
Read the wallet request, not just the page
- Check the asset, spender, amount, and duration when the wallet displays them.
- Decline unfamiliar requests, including message signatures. Calling something a “message” does not make it automatically safe.
- Wallet alerts and transaction simulations can add useful context, but they cannot guarantee that an interaction is safe.
Separate routine use from valuable holdings
Consider keeping valuable assets in offline storage and using a separate wallet with no valuable holdings for unfamiliar sites. Offline key storage reduces routine online exposure, but it does not protect assets if you approve a malicious operation using that wallet. A hardware wallet is a category of offline-storage device, not a substitute for checking what you sign.
Protect your recovery phrase
Never enter a recovery phrase into a website or give it to someone who contacts you claiming to offer support. Ledger warns that unsolicited messages and recovery-phrase requests are phishing indicators in its security guidance.

How to revoke a token approval
Revoking an approval removes a spender’s allowance for the relevant token; it does not undo a transfer that has already happened. MetaMask defines revocation as setting the allowance for a specific spender back to zero. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it requires a network fee. Disconnecting a site from your wallet is not the same as revoking an approval. MetaMask’s token-approval explainer describes approvals and revocation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Identify the wallet account and blockchain network involved in the suspicious interaction.
- Open the wallet’s official approval-management interface, or use a trusted approval tool. MetaMask names Revoke.cash and ScamSniffer as options for managing permissions.
- Find the suspicious spender and token allowance, then revoke it if you no longer trust or need it.
- Review the transaction details in your wallet and confirm only if the revocation request is the action you intend to authorize.
Wallet interfaces and supported networks can change. Use official wallet guidance for the current interface, and do not assume that revoking one approval removes permissions on other networks or for other tokens.
What to do after a suspicious signature or suspected theft
If you signed but see no transfer
Promptly inspect permissions for the relevant account and network, then revoke suspicious approvals using the process above. A revocation cannot guarantee safety if a transfer has already occurred or if you signed an authorization that is not represented as a conventional token allowance.
If you see unauthorized transfers
Stop using the affected wallet. Check its activity and save transaction details for reporting. MetaMask’s compromised-account guidance states that confirmed transactions cannot be reversed and missing funds cannot be restored through its support. MetaMask Help Center.
Quick Recap
If your recovery phrase or private key may be exposed
- From a separate browser profile or device, create a new wallet and store its recovery phrase offline.
- Stop using the compromised wallet and any accounts derived from the exposed recovery phrase.
- Move remaining funds only if it is safe to do so. Do not send additional gas funds to an account that may have a sweeper script.
- Report the incident to the relevant authorities and your wallet provider. Ignore unsolicited recovery agents who contact you through social media replies or direct messages.
