Bitcoin fees depend on transaction size and competition for block space. Ethereum fees depend on the computation a transaction uses and the price per unit of gas. XRP Ledger transactions specify a fee in XRP that is destroyed, with the required cost able to rise under network load. These are different mechanisms, so a single fee comparison can mislead; check the estimate in your wallet immediately before signing.

How Bitcoin fees work
A Bitcoin transaction spends one or more unspent transaction outputs, or UTXOs. Its fee is the difference between the total value of its inputs and the total value of its outputs. The fee is not primarily a percentage of the amount being sent: the size of the signed transaction and competition for limited block space are the key factors. Wallets commonly express the fee rate in satoshis per virtual byte (sat/vB). Miners choose which transactions to include in a block, so a transaction offering a more competitive rate is generally more attractive when space is scarce. A higher fee rate can improve a transaction’s competitiveness, but it cannot promise an exact confirmation time.

How Ethereum gas fees work
Gas measures the execution work a transaction uses. A basic ETH transfer uses less gas than many smart-contract interactions, which may require more computation. The total execution fee depends on both the amount of gas used and the price paid per unit; knowing only one of those values is not enough to determine the fee. See Ethereum.org’s gas and fees guide.
Base fee, priority fee, and maximum fee
- Base fee: A protocol-set per-unit charge that is burned.
- Priority fee: An optional tip per unit that goes to the validator.
- Maximum fee: A cap on the price per gas unit a transaction authorizes. It is not necessarily the amount ultimately paid.
The fee paid reflects gas used multiplied by the applicable base fee plus priority fee. Ethereum’s EIP-1559 specification describes this fee-market design.

Illustrative calculation, not a live quote
Ethereum.org gives 21,000 gas units as an example for an ETH transfer. In its worked example, a 10 gwei base fee plus a 2 gwei priority fee produces 21,000 × (10 + 2) = 252,000 gwei, or 0.000252 ETH. These are documentation example values, not current network prices; actual fees vary with the transaction and prevailing fee market. Ethereum.org’s gas guide provides the example and explains how the components are applied.
How XRP Ledger transaction costs work
An XRP Ledger transaction includes a cost denominated in drops of XRP. Unlike a Bitcoin miner fee or Ethereum validator tip, this cost is not paid to a validator or another beneficiary: the XRP specified in the signed transaction’s Fee field is destroyed. The documentation reports a standard minimum of 10 drops, but that is not a permanent fee promise. The required cost can increase under network load, and transaction type can affect it. Check the current recommended cost and the Fee field before signing; the amount specified in the signed field is the amount destroyed.
Why a direct fee comparison can mislead
The units measure different things: Bitcoin quotes a rate for transaction data size, Ethereum quotes a price for computation, and the XRP Ledger transaction specifies a cost in drops. Fees also respond differently to transaction details and network conditions. Sending the same dollar value on all three networks does not make the fees equivalent or determine them by itself.

Check the wallet’s estimate immediately before signing, and read it in the context of the operation you are making. For Bitcoin, consider the estimated transaction size and fee rate; for Ethereum, consider the operation, gas estimate, and fee settings; for XRP Ledger, inspect the current required cost and signed Fee field.

A protocol network fee is separate from an exchange withdrawal fee, a wallet-provider charge, or the cost of converting fiat currency. Those charges are set by the relevant service rather than by the network fee mechanisms described here, and they are not quantified in the official network documentation linked above.
