Critical Role’s official pages document guest players in campaign episodes and cast members missing public appearances, but they do not set out a universal rule for handling an absent player during a game. The clearest examples are specific: Ashly Burch appeared as a guest in Campaign 2, Episode 26, while Sam Riegel was not listed for the cast’s 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel. Neither example establishes a general attendance policy.
What is known about absences during a Critical Role game?
Critical Role describes itself as an improvisational, longform tabletop role-playing show guided by a Game Master. Its official overview names the original cast as Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Laura Bailey. Critical Role’s show overview provides that context.

The official listing for Campaign 2, Episode 26, “Found & Lost” identifies Ashly Burch as a guest player. The episode description also mentions the party waking up to find members missing. That is evidence of a guest appearing in that episode, not a statement about why guests are invited, how long they tend to appear, or what production does whenever a regular player misses a session.

The official material cited here does not establish whether an absent character is written out, controlled by the Game Master, or temporarily played by another cast member. A particular episode can show what happened in that story, but it cannot by itself establish a standard procedure for the show.

How is a guest player different from an absent cast member?
A guest player is an invited participant in a particular episode or story; an absent cast member is someone who is not present for a specific session or appearance. Those are different situations. Ashly Burch’s Campaign 2 listing documents a guest role, but it does not say that she was filling in for an absent regular cast member.
Critical Role’s campaigns should also be considered individually rather than treated as one fixed cast arrangement. The official introduction to Campaign Four names Brennan Lee Mulligan as Game Master and says the campaign’s format would be discussed as West Marches. That campaign-specific description does not explain how earlier campaigns handled attendance.

What does the 2024 Comic-Con listing tell us?
The official San Diego Comic-Con 2024 panel listing announced the cast would attend “sadly minus Sam Riegel” and named Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, and Travis Willingham. This documents that the announced panel proceeded without Riegel. It does not give a reason for his absence or describe how a game session is managed when a cast member cannot attend.
Where can viewers check specific examples?
For an episode-specific example, start with the official episode page: it identifies the guest and provides the episode description. Critical Role also offers video and podcast routes for following episodes; its FAQ says captions are used on broadcasts and VODs. Those resources can help viewers follow an individual installment, but they should not be read as a published general policy for missed sessions.
